Wish Me Home
Wish Me Home tells the story of Cara Butter and her travel companion, Hemi. Cara is on the run from someone she has spent a lifetime loving. Cara and her twin sister Hana had been through a lot, moving from one foster care to another. Now in their twenties, Hana had managed to break Cara’s heart. While Cara still loves her sister, she knows that she has to get away from all the toxicity in order to heal. With nothing but the clothes on her back, Cara leaves all behind and ends up meeting a stray dog that she named Hemi. Cara and Hemi set on a journey to California, where she wants to meet her hero, Ernest Hemingway.
This journey turns out to be nothing like Cara expected. Sure, she has no money and is forced to scrap for food for both of them, but Cara meets many people who turn to friends in the end. The journey on foot unfolds slowly, and with it, Cara’s past and current life is laid bare. After all the abuse suffered over the years, it is hard for Cara to trust the caring and decent folks she meets along the way. However, the more she interacts with them, her defenses start to diminish. Will Cara get to meet Earnest Hemingway as she planned? What will come out of this meeting in case it happens?
One of the issues highlighted here is depression. Even though the author doesn’t go too much into details on this subject, it is easy to see the harm depression causes in families. The story also shows how people live with devastating pain, loneliness, and hopelessness. This book will tug your heart as you get to see Cara’s past and the life she and her sister had to endure. It is also amazing how Hemi opens Cara’s heart and shows her that she can heal and enjoy her life once again despite all the heartaches. The people she also meets are great, and they show that all is not lost, there is still hope in humanity.
Wish Me Home is a raw but warm story of friendship, love, and life in general. It is the tale of a girl who formed a strong bond with a mongrel she met at her lowest point. While you will meet an emotionally damaged girl in the beginning, Cara will be much better by the time you get to the last page. Her journey from Atlanta to California takes the reader through the family troubles that characterized Cara’s life. However, Hemi turns into her guardian angel, and the sweet dogs help Cara turn her life around. This is a perfect story for women’s fiction fans. Dog loves will also find the story intriguing. The writing is excellent, and the characters are just amazing.
True to Me
True to Me tells the story of Quinn Maguire, a woman in search of her father. Quinn thinks she has her life figured out. With a stable life and a fiancé, she is ready to spend the rest of her life with, what else would she want? Things change when on her deathbed, Quinn’s mother confesses that the absentee father she spent her youth detesting wasn’t her father after all. Curious to find her biological father and trace her roots, Quinn takes a trip to Maui, Hawaii. Here she spends time on the island where her mother grew up, meeting its people and immersing herself in its rich culture.
Quinn’s trip to Hawaii turns to be completely different from what she expected. The details she uncovers about her mother’s past shake her to the core, and once she starts digging, all the secrets Quinn’s mother tried to hide from her come to the surface. Life on the island comes with its fair share of challenges, especially because there is not much Quinn knows about this place. There is also the fiancé she left behind who cannot stop questioning Quinn’s choices on her trip. However, the more Quinn familiarizes herself with Maui and her family history, the woman she feels she was meant to begin to emerge.
One of the most outstanding things about this story is the Maui setting. The author has done a great job of bringing this beautiful island to life, and it is easy for the reader to travel with Quinn and enjoy the beauty of her new home. You also get to live a life in Quinn’s life and see life growing with a single mother and a father she always abandoned them felt like. It is a pity that Quinn had to grow up with so much hurt, but it is fantastic that she did not give up hope of meeting her father one day. All other characters in this story are likable, and it is fun seeing how they influence Quinn’s life.
True to Me is an intriguing contemporary read with an element of mystery in it. This story is filled with Hawaiian history and culture. There are many twists and turns to Quinn’s story, and just when you think you have it all figured out, another turn will throw you completely off-guard. All characters are well developed, and some of their stories will leave you in tears. You will find that all the characters featured in this story come with baggage, but they are all good people. Overall, this is an intriguing story with an interesting storyline, wonderful characters, and a perfect pace. It is also quite short and perfect for one-sitting reading.
