Kate Dyer-Seeley is a noteworthy writer in the United States who writes novels in the mystery genre. The Pacific Northwest Mystery Series is the series written by her for Kensington Publication. Various publications, national and international magazines have featured her work. Along with her husband and son, she lives in the Pacific Northwest that is ruggedly beautiful. She states that the inspiration behind her work is a pair of hot pink hiking boots. She loves hiking in the Columbia River George with her family and one weekend she witnessed a woman at the Angel’s Rest who was wearing those hiking boots that were hot pink in color. The woman was in her early twenties and that gave her the character in her book. Soon there was a death at the Angel’s Rest and this was not the first time such accident was happening. There she thought that if someone had ‘help’ there and thus a story popped in her head. Before becoming a writer, she worked for many publications of regional as well as international as a freelancer and her paycheck was $35. She immediately took a photo of the paycheck and as a form of motivation the photo was hung on the wall in her office. Thus, it was a big step in her career and soon she started writing her first series.
The main character of her series ‘Pacific Northwest’ is a young journalist named Meg Reed. In order to develop interest in her writing, she changes the atmosphere of her office like if she is inside Meg’s head. She transforms herself like Meg will think as does things that Meg, who is young, will do. The walls of her office are plastered with microbes, vintage dresses and images of windsurfers. She listens swing and big band music a lot as the character Meg is a modern day throwback. Along with this she mixes up some Taylor swift songs to give a quirky mix. Kate Dyer-Seeley’s list of what to become when she grows up was infinite. She wanted to become a teacher, an astronaut, a marine biologist, a reporter, a paleontologist, etc. She believes this is the reason why she is able to write so easily about so many things. Whatever places she has mentioned her books she has researched every one of it. She says that it is her hobby to do so. She believes that through Meg’s eyes people around the world will get to know about the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Apart from all these things she likes pastry recipes from a coffeehouse or sometimes from her own kitchen. She also loves swimming, hiking, and walking. Kate Dyer-Seeley has given a pen name of ‘Ellie Alexander’ for her other series that has the title ‘Bakeshop Mysteries’. In the year 2010, she made her debut with ‘Underneath the Ash’, which was a non-fiction memoir. The first novel of her series Pacific Northwest Mysteries was ‘Scene of the Climb’. A month later, under the pen name of Ellie Alexander her first novel titled ‘Meet Your Baker’ was published. This was the first novel of the series named the Bakeshop Mysteries.
The first novel of her series Pacific Northwest has the title of ‘Scene of the Climb’. It was published by Kensington on 3rd June in the year 2014. In this novel, there is a character named Meg Reed, who lives in Portland, Oregon. The city is very beautiful and peaceful, along with a feel of a small town like. She used to enjoy and hike all the time with Jill, who is her best friend. But now she has completed her graduation as a journalist from the journalism school and she is in a search of a job. So she bluffs to Greg Dixon, the editor-in-chief of Northwest Extreme Magazine that she is an adventurer and loves writing and makes her way in. Soon she is hired for her first assignment of rocky climb, but she fakes a fall as she has a fear of heights and doesn’t want to participate. The two-thousand-foot peak of Angel’s Rest terrified her as she was there to cover the adventure show of a reality TV. Soon after faking her way out of the climb she discovers a dead body on the cliff’s side and now she has to investigate that murder. But to do so she has to overcome her fear of heights to find the culprit. If she climbs safely without being dead, then the murderer might kill her. Hence, she is putting herself in a dangerous situation and she has to be careful about it.
The second novel of the series Pacific Northwest has the title of ‘Slayed on the Slopes’. Kensington published this novel and it came on 21st March of the year 2015. Meg is hoping to impress the editor of Northwest Extreme by covering the new Ridge Rangers’ winter training The team is Oregon’s elite high and they are there for a four day session of winter training. After reaching the remote Silcox Hut at the top of Mount Hood, she finds that tension has risen in the group. She thought that sitting near a cheery fireplace with a hot chocolate in her hand, she can easily cover the event, but it seems this is not the case here. While she was thinking how to prepare a story that can impress her editor, she hears a gunshot. No one among the people in the hut are ready to believe her, until a body of a person is discovered in a pool covered with frozen blood of the victim. The body is found out to be Ben Rogers, who was a Ridge Ranger. Now the story is not the first priority of Meg as she is thinking whether she will be alive when all this ends. All the characters of the book are well-developed and well-rounded. Meg is using all her skills to its full extent to find the real killer and while doing so some of the mysteries behind the death of her father is revealed. It is very hard to suspect the murderer, until the suspense is revealed at the very end.
