Kage Baker was one of the noteworthy American authors, who was well known for writing fantasy and science fiction novels. She is particularly famous for writing the Company series. This series includes novels, novellas, and 2 collections of short stories. Author Baker had started her writing career in the year 1997 with the release of her debut book titled In the Garden of Iden. Author Baker was born on June 10, 1952, and died on January 31, 2010. Her birth had taken place in Hollywood, California. For most parts of her life, Baker lives in Hollywood and Pismo Beach. Before going on to establish herself as a professional novelist, she was involved in theater for many years. She was even involved in the teaching of Elizabethan English in the form of a 2nd language. The unusual first name of author Baker is combined from the names of her grandmothers, one of whom was named Kate and the other one as Genevieve. Author Baker is best remembered for writing historical science fiction books of travel, especially the Company novel series. The first stories written by Baker were released in the Science Fiction of Asimov in the year 1997. Her first novel was also released in the same year by Hodder and Stoughton publication. Among the other prominent works of author Baker is the novel, The Empress of Mars, which was awarded with the Thordore Sturgeon prize and was also nominated for the Hugo Award. In 2008, Baker gave away her archive as a donation to the Special Collections and Rare Books department of the University of Northern Illionois. During the following year, a novel and a short story that Baker had written received nominations for the World Fantasy Award. However, none of them were able to win the award.
In 2010, author Baker was reported to be seriously ill after getting diagnosed with cancer. Her death occurred after a long battle with uterine cancer. After her death, one of her books titled The Women of Nell Gwynne, was shortlisted World Fantasy and Hugo Awards in the category of the Best Novella. The novella won the Nebula Award in the same category later in the year. At the time of her death, author Baker was working on a novel which remained unfinished. It was later completed and published by Baker’ sister named Kathleen Bartholomew. Kathleen used the handwritten notes of Baker for completing the novel. Author Baker has mentioned in her interviews that she had spent around 12 years of her life in blue uniforms to obtain school education. Her previous occupations include mural painter, graphic artist, playwright, director, clerk, teacher, stage manager, and assistant coordinator. For 20 years, Baker was immersed totally in the research work of Elizabethan and historical periods. It paid off quite well for her as she obtained a vast knowledge about period details and speech. In her free times, author Baker used to read old stories and the popular works of other noteworthy writers. Before her death, Baker was living happily in Pismo Beach, until she acquired cancer. Her apartment was located facing the sea. Baker used to spend her spare times by getting engaged in bird watching, gardening, and cooking. Author Baker and her writings are greatly missed by her fans all over the world.
The Company series written by Kage Baker consists of 12 novels and 5 novellas in total, which were released between the years 1997 and 2012. An initial book of this series is entitled ‘The Graveyard Game’. It was published by Tor Books in 2005. At the start of the book, Mendoza is introduced as a Preserver. She works for the Dr Zeus Company and lives in the past for collecting species for future. In an incident, Mendoza kills 6 people from California in the year 1863. As a result, the Company does not take her back into the present world, which results in her disappearance. One of the senior Preservers in the Company, named Joseph, loved Mendoza like his own daughter as he did not have any. When he hears about Mendoza’s disappearance, he gets filled with rage. Joseph gets heavily drunk with chocolate and decides to find her, no matter how long it takes for him to get to her. As Joseph was an immortal and indestructible cyborg, he had unlimited patience in him. The mission that he starts for rescuing Mendoza, soon goes on to uncover a deep conspiracy that stretches over more than 50 centuries. Behind the conspiracy lie genocide and graveyards full of agents of the Company. Joseph also comes across an ominous Silence that spread all over in 2355. Joseph becomes successful in finding Mendoza. She too, joins him in unraveling the conspiracy by getting deep into its roots.
Another successful book of this series is called as ‘The LIfe of the World to Come’. The Tor publication released it in 2005. At the beginning of the book, Mendoza is once again shown as an immortal cyborg, who is sent to the past from the 24th century to bring back lost things. As a botanist, she has very good knowledge about plants. When she was sent to the 16th century UK, she met a native, who was tall, and dark, but who very handsome. This man dies tragically. Then in 19th century America, Mendoza meets an identical native man, who is also dark and tall like her previous lover. He too dies, but this time, Mendoza makes sure that she kills the men responsible for her lover’s death. She commits 6 murders. The Company does not like this step taken by Mendoza as it was not good for their business. And as they could not hurt her because she was indestructible and immortal, they make her disappear. In the present world, 3 geniuses meet at an Oxford University parlor and decide to become Inklings. They start working under the orders of Dr Zeus to develop historic stories. The three men create a dashing hero, who radiates sexuality and determination. On the other hand, Mendoza gets stranded 150,000 years back. She does not find any more natives to love. She longs for the love of the man whom she lost on two occasions. Mendoza begins to lose all hopes as her chances of returning back seem very less. Then suddenly, a renegade arrives from the future. He is also tall, dark, moderately handsome, and makes Mendoza go mad about him. With the arrival of this hero, Mendoza begins to see a new beginning and the possibility of a better future.
