Jon Katz is one of the popular authors of America who has written several successful novels based on the literature & fiction, children’s books, and nonfiction genres. He was born on August 8, 1947. Jon took up journalism as his first career and then went on to take up a variety of other careers like novelist and photographer. As a journalist, Jon was a frequent contributor to the online magazine called HotWired and the technology website known as Slashdot. He has also contributed to the online new magazine called as Slate. When Jon had started his writing career, he used to write a series of crime novels as well as books based on the geek subculture. The more recent works written by him focus mainly on the relationship between the animals and the humans. Throughout his writing career, author Jon Katz has written a number of novels and nonfiction works which are based on a variety of topics ranging from the evolving relationship of the humans with the animals and the geek culture. Initially, Jon wrote a successful mystery series that revolved around the main character named Kit Deleeuw, who is described by him as a private investigator and a former financier at Wall Street. Kit Deleeuw is also depicted as living in the fictional town of Rochambeau in New Jersey, United States.
In his more recent works, Jon has tried to display the growing relationship between dogs, as well as other animals, and humans. He mainly shares the story of his relationship with his dog and cattle-grazing animals on his farm located in upstate New York. Jon has also tried to emphasize on the broader issues of the place of the animals in today’s modern world, both physically and emotionally. Most of the novels written by author Jon mainly describe his personal relationships with the dogs. He began writing novels about dogs for the first time after adopting a Border Collie, who was very difficult for Jon to handle. He credits the Border Collie for bringing a lot of changes in his life as it caused him to wake up early in the morning and take up shepherding on his farm. Author Jon has extensively written about the ways the dogs are trained and the ways in which should actually be trained. He explains that the reason most approaches of dog training fail is because they seem to be too inflexible. Also because, as dog owners the humans tend to over-anthropomorphize their companion animals.
Sometimes, the dogs are given a lot of credit than required by them, which makes them very much complex. As a result, the communication is muddied. The owners also tend to treat the dogs as their soul mates most of the time, rather than respecting their true animal nature and understanding their feelings. In one of his interviews, author Jon Katz has said that he cannot imagine his life without having a dog. He has also said that he does not merely think of dogs as the substitutes for humans, but they are more reliable than most people. In the year 2014, Jon wrote a book on the controversial topic of New York carriages with horses. Through the novel, he has supported the idea of allowing the horse carriages to continue the trade in the New York City. As far as his personal life is concerned, Jon was married to Paula Span, but the marriage ended in the year 2008. Later, he married the artist named Maria Heinrich Wulf in the year 2010. The marriage took place on their farm in New York. The Brooklyn sportswriter named Emma Span is the daughter of Jon Katz from his first wife.
One of the initial novels written by author Jon Katz about the relationship between the dogs and humans was titled A Dog Year: 12 Months, 4 Dogs, and Me’. It was published by the Random House Trade publishing house in the year 2002. In the novel previous to this one, Jon had described the strength and support that he got from his two yellow colored Labrador retrievers named Stanley and Julius. After reading the book, a dog breeder contacted Jon and asked him to keep his dog as he believed that the dog was only meant for him. It was a 2 year old border collie named Devon. At that time, Julius and Stanley were 6 and 7 years old respectively. Jon found Devon to be well bred, but homeless. As Jon already had a set of dogs at his home, he was hesitant to take Devon with him. But, he believed that change can come in any form and this time it had come on 4 legs for him. Shortly after, Jon brought Devon to his home and kept it with his other dogs. This way, Devon found a home and Jon fond another companion. The plot of the novel shows how a man can discover things about himself through a dog, and another. It also shows how the temperament of the pets varies from that of the humans. The novel depicted a story of understanding and trust, of change and continuity, and of life and death. Due to all these elements, the novel proved to be an excellent read with a hilarious, insightful, and deeply moving story.
One of the other initial novels written by author Katz was titled ‘Dog Days : Dispatches from Bedlam Farm’. It was released by the Villard publishing house in the year 2007. The plot of this novel deals with the dreams of the people of leaving the city life and moving to the countryside. Jon, who is the owner of the Bedlam Farm, gives the an account of the unpredictable adventure of living a farm life. The novel shows how the border collies, the chickens, the sheep, the ram, the cat, and a surprising and social steer called Elvis contribute to the hum together with an occasional roar. Throughout the plot of the novel, Jon shows how he continued with his meditation about the things that the animals teach the humans, during the punishing winters and the tiring summer days. He also shows how the people owe a lot of things to the animals. The plot of the novel shows good neighbors, tales of passionate and true love, and a beautiful landscape, with the help of which Jon is able to tell marvelous stories about dogs and other animals, He has also tried to portray a rich and harmonious world of Bedlam Farm.
