Her works are mostly based on historical romance novels set in medieval America and Europe. Her writing styles and her ability to engage the reader in all her works has been the reason for her great success. Background information Johanna Lindsey’s background is quite an interesting one. Edwin Dennis Howard, who was Lindsey’s dad, died in German where he was serving in the American Army.
It was during his service in Germany that Lindsey was born. Before he died, he had always wished to move to Hawaii after retiring and in his honor Lindsey and her mother moved to Hawaii after his untimely death. Lindsey later got married to Ralph and had three children.
Later when her husband died, she moved to the state of Maine. Career Development Johanna Lindsey’s writing career began in 1977 when she wrote and released her first book called Captive Bride. The success of this book gave her the courage and esteem to write more books even creating several novel series. In total, she has forty-nine books that have all had success.
In a nutshell, she has had over 60 million copies of her book sold worldwide. Her books have also been translated into 12 different languages following demand of her books in different regions outside English native speaking countries.
Her novel story line are popular for their heroes and heroines who rained and shaped the world in one way or the other. Main characters 1. Fires of Winter (Viking Haardrad Family Saga Series) Her first novel series was Viking Haardrad Family Saga series.
The series has been a success since the release of the first book in the series, ‘Fires of Winter.’ This book was written and released in 1980. One of the main characters in this book is Garrick Haardrad, who is a prince among the Vikings.
He is portrayed as an arrogant man who always gets his way. The other main character is Lady Brenna. She is described as a courageous woman who is ready to defend herself at any cost. The book Fires of Winter describes how the two meet and how the unthinkable happened as the two finally fall in love.
Glorious Angel: The second series book released by Lindsey was actually from a different series called ‘The Southern Series.’ The book titled Glorious Angel was written in 1982. One of the main characters in this book is Angela Sherrington, who is portrayed as being from a poor background. The other main character is Bradford Maitland, the son of a rich plantation owner. The book reveals the events that transpire between the two lovers since their childhood days until they finally get together.
Fire of Winter: The ‘Fires of Winter’ begins with the capture of Lady Brenna by the Vikings army headed by Garrick’s father. Dauntless and courageous, Brenna vows not to be a slave of the barbarian Vikings. From the description of her childhood, we get to learn that she had prior skills in sword fighting.
On her capture, she is taken back to the Viking camp where she is handed over to Garrick as his slave. Garrick treats her as such and constantly visits her quarters where he violates her. This event angers Brenna greatly to an extent that she tries to escape. Garrick views the escape as a betrayal of his love for her. This causes him to lose trust in her, and he even refuses to take her back when she is kidnapped and returned to his home.
Later in the novel Brenna delivers a son who we believe to be Garrick’s son. The son is born early and hence life threatened. Garrick heroically saves him and this encounter softens his heart toward Brenna. Brenna faces danger throughout the books as unknown people try to take her life. The mystery of these unknown killers is solved later in the novel. Garrick proposes to Brenna and she accepts the offer. The two marry and live happily forever after.
Glorious Angel: The Glorious Angel was the second book written by Johanna Lindsey and was released in 1982. At the beginning of the book, we meet Angela Sherrington, a poor girl living in Alabama at the center of the civil war. Angela’s affections for Bradford are made known to us from a very tender age of 11. Unlike Angela, Bradford Maitland is the son Jacob Maitland, who is wealthy and owns a plantation.
Jacob had been observing Angela from a distance throughout her childhood days and when her father dies, he sends her to Massachusetts to complete her education. Before sending her to school, he tells her a little about her mom, and she even gets to learn that her mother also took her studies in Massachusetts. On one fateful afternoon as Angela was shopping, she stumbles upon an unsuspecting Bradford. The two had a romantic encounter that day, but Bradford did not at any moment realize who she was. After the encounter, Bradford is obsessed with this mystery girl who did not even leave him her name. Bradford hires detectives to find her and after finding her the duo fall in love.
Angela later returns to school and she still does not tell him her name. Bradford decides to search for him but in the process he has to go back home due to his father’s deteriorating health. He finds her there and also gets to learn that most people thought Angela to be his father’s mistress. Bradford and Angela later get married with his father’s blessings. To the contrary, Bradford’s brother and wife were not happy about their marriage.
They try to break up this engagement and at first they succeed. Later in the novel the two love birds reconcile their differences and live happily forever after. Johanna Lindsey works are an art of perfection which leaves the readers wrapped in the world of romance and fantasy. The use of vivid explanation indulges the reader into the events taking place in the book from the very beginning to the last page. She is truly on of the best writers of her time.

I started reading her books at in 6th grade when I purchased Captive Bride at a yard sale many (and I mean many) years ago. I fell in love with her writing, her style and her characters. I could find myself in the stories she wrote. I still have some of those books to this day. The rest are on my reader. She will be missed as will her stories she brought to life.
I’ve been an Avid fan of her, from her very 1st, and bought every one she imagined! I even put her above Dean Koontz, but I’m blessed that I’ve always been a true fan….I am devastated that her family n her fans will miss out on her next adventure. We all lost a beautiful writer…..but I’m thankful, so blessed we got to share in her imagination…. God bless u, hunny, thank you for each n every word, u shared my life. I only wish that I coulda got an autograph…. Ill miss u, Jo, God bless, n thank u for all ur adventures, n love…..we were truly blessed by you…….Give Elvis a hug for me……..E
I am currently rereading and rebuying all of her books. I love her style of writing. She is dearly missed.
I was not an avid reader until I found Johanna’s books! I then couldn’t stop until I read them all. I once owned pretty many & donated them to my library so that someone else might discover her stories. I am very saddened by her passing!
I have been a Johanna fan since she started and her books are unmatched! We have truly lost a gem but her words will live on in our hearts!!t
I owned all of her books and gave them to our local library. I’ve regretted it ever since! So I’ve been buying them again on kindle. I was so sad to read about her passing! She the only romance novelist that I ever liked and bought the books of.
I have been reading Ms Lindsey’s books for years. My favorites are the Malory/Anderson romances. I’m so sad to see she has passed. She was one of a kind in her novels. I wrote her once in the early 1990s and she wrote me back. I was overjoyed. God bless her and her family. She and her novels will be missed greatly.
When will there be another book published I’ve read all her books and always look forward to reading more
Sadly, Ms. Lindsey passed away in 2022 so there will be no more books 😔
Correction: She died in 2019, not 2022.
I have been with Johanna since her first book came out in 1977. At one time I had a large collection of her books. I have read most of her books but One Heart to Win.
I did read Stormy Persuasion, which is the last one I have.
I would like to know how many more books that she, herself has written. That I don’t have Not ones that may have been written by ghost writers…For I have found out the hard way that a book had been written by someone else. Very disappointing.
I am so very sorry that we have lost a very brilliant writer.
Did she leave any series unfinished? I don’t know if I read her most recent book
