In 1969, Jimmy married his first wife Margie Washichek, and later Jane Slagsvol, with whom he had two daughters, Savannah Jane and Sarah Delaney, and adopted son Cameron Marley. His enthusiasm for flying earned him the title of a Dassault Falcon 900 jet pilot. In August 1994, he experienced a plane crash in Nantucket, Massachusetts but fortunately walked away with only minor injuries. In 2015, he was honored with an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Miami.

Jimmy Buffett has been a source of inspiration for many through his music and writing, and has generously hosted fundraisers for Democratic politicians such as Hillary Clinton in 2016.
