Biography of Jenny Nimmo
As we saw earlier, Jenny Nimmo was born on the 15th of January 1944, in a place called Windsor, Berkshire in England. Jenny lived and loved a solitary life. She was her parents’ only child, but never lived long enough to see them together. Mrs. Nimmo’s father, who was a scientist by profession passed on while she was five years old, and she spent the rest of her life with her mother.
Jenny Nimmo was sent to a prep school when she was six years old. The prep school became cold and so terrifying that her mother transferred her to a boarding school that was child friendly, when she was nine years old.
Jenny loved to read as a child. She led a lot of books that she started to write short stories, which she narrated to her friends in and out of school.
Work History
Nimmo first worked in a Repertory theatre company as a paid intern for approximately five years. She then became the assistant manager of the Company, before being promoted to a juvenile lead producer. Nimmo, however, failed to secure a government job in England. She then moved to Italy, where she worked as a governess for a three boys squad in Amalfi, Italy.
Nimmo then returned to England, where she got a job at BBC, and became a photographic researcher, before being promoted to an assistant floor manager, and later made the editor of the children’s Programme called Jackanory.
Mrs. Jenny spent most of her years at BBC, where she was in charge of adapting other writer’s books and stories for Television series. In fact, she adapted more than 40 episodes, equivalent to eight stories for the Jackanory readings.
Jenny Nimmo’s first book called The Bronze Trumpeter, was published by Angus and Robertson in the first month of 1975. The book was later made into a Television script, months after it was released to the market.
1975 is a historical year for Nimmo Jenny for three reasons. First, it was the year her first book was published, a year that she married her Boyfriend, David Wynn Millward, and a year she gave birth to her first born child. David was from Welsh, and he worked as an illustrator and artist.
Jenny and David Nimmo have been blessed with one son and two daughters. All the three children were born in 1975 to 1980. Myfanwy, Jenny’s first daughter was born in 1975, a year in which Mrs, Nimmo resigned from BBC to take care of his first born.
Jenny Nimmo published her first novel called The Bronze Trumpeter, a few weeks after giving birth to her first born child. The Book was based on Nimmo’s experience in Italy. Jenny later relocated to Wales, where their only Son Lanto was born. This was in 1976.
The family then struggled to settle down in Wales for some months, and decided to move South of England, where David secured a job as an art teacher at Hertfordshire school. The family stabilized and later decided to move back to Wales, in their bid to bring up their young family in a country environment. This was in 1980, a year in which they were blessed with Gwenhwyfar, their third and last born daughter.
In 1982 Jenny and David started a drawing and painting Summer school. David used the watermill that he had inherited from his father. In 1983, Jenny started to write again.
The family still lives in Wales, where Nimmo spends most of her time helping her sweetheart with art work and illustrations for schools. She, however, sets some time to be alone, so that she can get, develop and write down ideas to write about in future.
It is, however, interesting that Nimmo also turned his husband into an illustrator writer. He has since published a few books by himself, and has also collaborated with Jenny Nimmo to write four books starting from 1994 to 2000). The spirit of collaboaration does not end there in the family. This is because Nimmo has also partnered with Gwen Millward; their last born to write a picture book for children. Jenny did the writing, while her daughter did the illustrations. The book named the Beasties was published at Egmont UK in 2010. Gwen is, however, following the footsteps of her mother. She published her first book as a writer and illustrator in 2012. She named the book Bear and Bird, and it was published by Egmont UK in September 2012.
Jenny Nimmo’s Best Work
Jenny Nimmo is a talented wordsmith and an extraordinary thinker. She has written numerous books, but her Children of the Red King series, Red King Series or simply the Charlie Bone series still remains favorite among many people. The book series focuses on a central character called Charlie Bone, whose magical talent makes him popular for all the wrong reasons in his school. This put him in conflict with his seniors, school administrators and fellow students, who doesn’t understand how his magic works.
The book series is so popular that it has already been translated, and published in nine foreign international languages, and translated into eleven other regional/local languages by the year 2006. The series has eight books, all of which have been published by Egmont Press. Their book covers were, however, done by David Wyatt.
Adaptation in Television
The first book by Jenny Nimmo to be adapted into the Television series was The Snow Spider. The book was adapted by screenwriter Julia Jones in 1989 – 1991. The book was modified into 3 mini-series that were aired everyday by the HTV for about two years.
