Early and Personal Life
Born in 1968 on the 16th June, Jennifer L. Holm grew up in San Diego, California, in the United States, harboring a passion for literature from an early age. Living in Whibdey Island, which is located on the Puget Sound based in Washington State, she would later move to Audubon in Pennsylvania. Growing up with four brothers, she would later go on to graduate from Dickinson College based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Showing a strong interest in both reading and writing from early on, she would continue to develop this passion over time. Prior to writing full-time she would work in television, which would provide her with an insight into dealing with large audiences. Currently living in Foster City in California, she’s lived their since 2013 with her husband, and they have two children, as she continues to write to this present day.
Writing Career
In 1999 Jennifer L. Holm would begin her literary career with the novel ‘Our Only May Amelia,’ which would also begin her ‘May Amelia’ series of children’s novels. That same year she’d also publish the ‘Stink Files’ series alongside fellow writer Jonathan Hamel, who she’d write the rest of the series with that year too. This would then see her become a fully fledged author, producing a large quantity of her own work and writing.
Teaming up with her brother the illustrator Matthew Holm in 2005, the two of them would go on to create the long-running ‘Babymouse’ series of novels. Her work has also been adapted for the stage, with her debut being directed by John Olive for The River Theater based in Astoria, Oregon. Winning numerous awards for her work, including the Newbery Honor Book of 2000, she continues achieve great success worldwide.
Penny From Heaven
This would first be brought out in 2006 on the 25th of July to much acclaim, this being an entirely stand-alone novel. Released through the ‘Random House Books for Young Readers’ publishing label it would be aimed primarily at a younger audience. The audiobook is read by Amber Sealey, and it’s no surprise that it went on to win nominations and awards all of its own.
A historical novel, this would draw from Holm’s own life, looking at the past of her own Italian-American family. Bringing it all to light, she does an excellent job of immersing the reader in the world, paying close attention to detail along the way. Not only is it a history of her family, but it’s a history of America too, capturing a moment in time and holding it there upon the page.
Taking place in 1953, this would see 11-year-old Penny dreaming of a whole host of different activities, including eating ice-cream and swimming. Her mother is afraid she’s catch polio in the pool though, and, on top of all that, her family is in disarray, with her favorite uncle living in a car. Now it appears that both sides of her family aren’t speaking to each other, as the rift between them needs to be healed. Recounting these events, the story captures the past, and brings to light this time once again for the reader in ‘Penny from Heaven.’
Our Only May Amelia
Initially released through the ‘HarperCollins’ publishing outlet, this would originally come out on the 1st of June in 1999. Another stand-alone title, this would also be a historical novel, this time travelling back to an earlier period in America’s history. Easy to read, it’s accessible to younger readers, giving them a clear insight into the past and what it was actually like.
Using a lot of her own family for inspiration, Holm uses the life-story of her own great-aunt May Amelia to help inspire her. This makes for an engaging look into the past of America when it was still a young country with a world of adventure ready and waiting. Aimed at younger readers again, it’s a bright and lively story that really brings its world to life in a fun and engaging way.
During 1899 a pioneer in the state of Washington, Amelia Jackson is the only girl who’s been born into the new settlement there. Ordered to behave the way a proper lady of the day is deemed to behave, she wants adventure like her brothers, with a whole new world at her fingertips. Soon it transpires that her mother is going to have another baby, and Amelia holds out hope that she will be a girl. If this is the case then life become easier for her living upon the banks of the Nasel River, in this classic story ‘Our Only May Amelia.’
