Jeaniene Frost, born on June 13th, 1974, is an American fantasy author. Her best known works, the Night Huntress and Night Huntress World series, are on the best-selling lists of the New York Times and USA Today. Fans have lauded her for creating engaging plots and vampire characters that both scare and mesmerize.
To date, over 20 countries have obtained the foreign rights to these novels. Readers can find them in libraries all over the world, including those of Australia, Canada and the universities of South Africa.
Jeanine Frost resides in North Carolina with her husband, Matthew Frost, who has accepted that she seldom cooks on weekends. The avid reader relishes poetry, travelling, spelunking and the occasional movie. The horror buff puts Signs and the Underworld movie series on her best-loved movies list.
Not surprisingly, the fictional characters that resonate with her are vampires. She has cited Selene from the Underworld movie series and Blade from the Blade series as her favorites.
From character to plot
Jeaniene Frost astounds audiences at reading conventions with gripping keynote speeches. She shares her writing process at these conferences.
An organic writer, she is a non-believer in a specific formula for creating a novel. For her, creating plots and characters are subjective processes.
The author spends weeks or months crafting a detailed picture of her characters in her creative mind. She mulls over the backgrounds, attributes and quirky flaws of both her heroines and her villains. Once she has shaped these characters, she drafts a skeletal outline of her plot first, as this is subject to change. For her, a plot that is too rigid loses its appeal. She then adds the locations where various scenes take place, all of which she researches.
Collaborating with others boosts her success. She exchanges ideas with other authors constantly. She takes into account her readers’ voices and always reads their email critiques.
Her inspiration
Jeaniene Frost draws her inspiration from the cemeteries she strolls around. Preferring the older ones, she adores them for their peaceful setting and rich history. She often uses these places as references and delves into the backgrounds of battlefields to enrich her novels.
The horror movies she recalls watching as a child add a suspenseful dimension to her books. Paranormal mythology and mystery have always fascinated her.
Writings
Jeaniene Frost derived the idea for the Night Huntress novels from a dream. She envisioned a couple in a heated argument. It came to her that the woman was a half-vampire and her husband, a full vampire. Their vehement quarrels resulted from his attempts to desert her.
Avon published the first Night Huntress novel, Halfway to the Grave, on October 30th, 2007. Since then, it has generated non-stop sales.
In Halfway to the Grave, Jeanine Frost charms readers with adventure and intrigue. It revolves around Cat Crawfield, a half-vampire whose mother, Justina, gave birth to her after being ravished by a full vampire. The story has a mesmerizing element of revenge; Cat’s half-vampire nature allows her to relentlessly pursue her diabolical vampire father. She surmounts many obstacles during her quest to kill her vampire father and other full-blooded Undead.
The author infuses Halfway to the Grave with titillating romance. A vampire bounty hunter, Bones, captures Cat. She forms a partnership with Bones, a full vampire himself, and later falls in love with him. Jeaniene Frost makes the partnership between Cat and Bones sensual and tense. The unexpected happens to the duo. Cat’s uncle compels her to join a secretive government agency devoted to vampire hunting, forcing them to part.
Jeaniene Frost continues to draw readers with One Foot in the Grave, filling the novel with heart-stopping twist and turns. Cat, now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, is a target for assassination by vampire enemies. The only recourse she has available is Bones, the Vampire she left. Passion courses through the novel, with Cat absolutely unable to maintain a professional boundary between herself and Bones.
Jeaniene Frost portrays Cat as withdrawn and friendless, owing to her vampire nature and the secrets she withholds. The red-haired, curvy, pale creature of the night is a skilled, strong-willed fighter who possesses the enviable combination of humanity and a vampire’s nighttime abilities. Stronger and faster than other humans, she can see as well at night as she does during the day. But as a half-human, she has a human’s sense of smell. Cat has no fangs or ability to manipulate minds. Her desire to rid the world of vampires stays strong throughout the series. She eventually becomes a full vampire, but craves only a vampire’s blood.
Bones is the epitome of machismo. Jeanine Frost’s British bounty hunter is a full vampire who was named Crispin Phillip Arthur Russell III. This hero is far from one-dimensional. The resilient son of a prostitute, he earned a living begging and thieving. After authorities caught him stealing, they sent him to Australia, where he soon became a vampire. Jeanine Frost has made him powerful and merciless, hunting other vampires with relentless gusto. He is also possessive of Cat and resents it when she captures male attention.
The critical reception to the Night Huntress has been phenomenally positive. The Library Journal gave accolades to the series. The Romantic Times Book Reviews greatly complimented the novels, naming Eternal Kiss of Darkness, part of the Night Huntress World Series, as the winner of the 2010 Vampire Romance Award. Publishers Weekly praised the series, but stated that ‘the would-be witticisms” in Once Burned are grating.
Jeaniene Frost ended the Night Huntress series sooner than expected in Book Seven, with the blessing of her editors, for fear of overextending it with insincere filler.
She is now penning The Night Prince series of novels, part of the Night Huntress Universe, which has Vlad Tepesh as a dynamic vampire hero who can control fire. A new heroine, Leila, is his partner. She is a human who looks into the past and future. She locates anyone in the present.
Jeaniene Frost’s writing never fails to enchant readers. She crafts well-shaped, multi-dimensional characters and teases readers with a winning formula of excitement, suspense and romance.
