Jean Rabe was only 12 years old when she was first published and she has never stopped since. The author went to Northern Illinois University where she studied journalism before she started working as a news reporter.
She would eventually work for Scripps Howard and would ultimately become the manager of their bureau in Western Kentucky. Suffering from itchy feet, she went to work for TSR, Inc in Wisconsin, which was then producing the very popular game “Dungeons & Dragons.”
Jean would then get into fiction writing and for several years penned novels in the “Dragonlance” series. She has written more than forty adventure, science fiction, mystery, and fantasy novels in addition to several ghost-written projects, and more short stories than she can count.
She has also been the editor of many anthologies, magazines, and short story collections over the years. In addition to editing multiple SFF, gaming, and military magazines, she has also been the business manager and editor of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Bulletin for years.
Rabe is also the recipient of several prestigious awards and has been a bestselling author on the New York Times and USA Today bestselling lists.
While Jean Rabe had always loved reading and writing fiction, she decided to become a journalist since it seemed like a viable way to earn a living while writing. Moreover, it did not need too many hours to major in and she could pick up several minors in geology and geography.
She would then do a lot of reporting as she covered science subjects such as geological surveys before she decided to shift to crime reporting which she did for several years. She had become very good at covering crime that she had been referred to as the gore reporter by the higher-ups, but she always felt that she wanted to do something else.
Occasionally, she would be asked to cover happy events such as a concert but it was always the gory things that stood out. Ultimately, she decided that she was going to write fiction about guts and blood.
Things changed for her when Penny Petticord who was working for RPGA called her and asked if she was interested in writing for the company and she said yes. It was a whole world of difference going from crime reporting to writing for a gaming company but she was good at her job.
After editing and writing for RPGA for a while, she began writing fiction books and is now a full-time author.
Over the years, Jean Rabe has become better known for her work with Andre Norton and a collection of short stories that she has coedited with Martin H Greenberg.
She is also the ghost author of several works and has been a co-author of nonfiction and fiction works alongside authors that include F. Lee Bailey, Gene DeWeese, Don Bingle, and Stephen D. Sullivan
.
Jean has said that she has always been a workaholic and even now as a full-time author, she just cannot relax and will spend much of her day writing and editing. Whenever she is writing one book, she is often thinking of the next which means she is working on two books at the same time.
In the evenings, she likes to play with her dogs and watch TV, which she sometimes uses as inspiration for her scenes characters, and book outlines.
Jean Rabe’s “The Dawning of a New Age” is set in the world of the “Dragonlance” sagas. At the opening of the novel, the world is trying to rebuild following the end of the war. Magic as well as the gods have disappeared which means this is the New Age of Mortals.
For some actors, this presents an opportunity to get ahead and they take it with both hands. Some of the most terrifying and strongest dragons have swooped in on the fragile world and have proclaimed their control and dominance over the land.
Destruction and death follow the establishment of the new authoritarian rule but a few heroes come together to fight the evil dragon rulers. Will they be able to come together to collaborate and defeat the dictatorial overlords before it is too late?
This is the first novel in the rerelease of what was the Dragonlance saga. It is a story that tells of the events between the “War of the Souls” trilogy and the “Dragons of Summer Flame” series that also ties in with “The Dhamon Saga.”
“The Day of the Tempest” by Jean Rabe opens with the Summer of Chaos having, at last, come to an end. The gods have left the world and ushered in a new Age of Mortals which for Ansalon is a nightmare.
Before the dust of war settles, the land is covered by vast shadows as some of the largest and most powerful dragons ever seen have visited Ansalon. The dragons have been wreaking havoc on the nations still trying to rebuild from the aftereffects of the just ended war.
Soon enough, the lands are changing mostly due to the strong magic of the dragon rulers. However new heroes have been banding together hoping to bring the people together in a fight for freedom.
The sorcerers are no longer able to extract any sort of power from the moon gods and the world is in dire straits without magic. Many of the characters soon realize that the magical artifacts and the earth itself contain leftover magic and try to find ways of harnessing it.
What is very interesting is that the author’s conception of Krynn’s magic is very imaginative and manifests itself in some creative ways as compared to that of the traditional Hickman and Weiss characters.
Jean Rabe’s novel “The Eve of the Maelstrom” is set in the age of tyranny in which one evil has risen above everything else.
The world of Krynn has been devastated by the Summer of Chaos, even as four dragon overlords have conquered Ansalon and remade the country in their image.
However, the evilest and greatest of the dragons is Malysstryx who is no longer content with what she has as she wants to ascend to godhood. But in her path stand a band of stalwart heroes who are determined to stop her from her selfish ambitions.
There are all manner of adventures as the story progresses but it is gratifying to see how Jean Rabe succeeds in ensuring the story does not lose any intensity but is rather full of emotion and tension.
