J.D. Kirk is a popular Scottish writer of thriller, mystery, and crime fiction stories. He is particularly famous for writing the DCI Logan series of novels featuring Glasgow based Detective Chief Inspector Jack Logan in the lead role. His books are widely successful and are known for their rich storyline and intriguing content. Kirk is a resident of the Scottish Highlands. He lives there with his loving wife, their 2 children, and several sturdy umbrellas. He had started writing at a very young age. Kirk tried his hand at writing a variety of novels in his genre, but could not complete any of them during the earlier stage of his career. Finally, he has able to make his debut with the 2019 book called A Litter of Bones. It was also the first book to feature his chief protagonist DCI Logan. In his books, Kirk has combined his love for cats, crime thrillers, and the Highlands.

Kirk says that he had made up his mind to become a writer at the age of nine. He had completed a class assignment on author Roald Dahl and realized for the first time that writing can also help people earn money. And as Kirk loved both money and writing, it seemed like he had found his perfect match. Subsequently, Kirk attempted to write and publish his first piece at the age of 11 when he submitted a letter in a Batman comic. Though he did not receive any money for his effort, it was enough for him to get his name printed as a writer and thereby cemented his ambition. And over the course of the next thirty years, Kirk successfully published more than a hundred novels under different pen names. He also wrote several animation scripts, comics, and also a few screenplays of feature-length films.

Kirk even ghostwrote a nonfiction book the science behind the stories of Roald Dahl. The details of this nonfiction book in the database of the British Library have his name listed as the author along with that of Roald Dahl. Recently, Kirk chose to publish a crime novel under his original name. It is set in the Highlands of Scotland and begins with the abduction of a child. The story then moves on to connect the abduction to a case in the past that was considered closed. And the senior investigator works on the latest abduction, he starts having doubts about whether the right man was caught in the old case. Kirk likes to add an element in his books. And his debut crime novel also contains black comedy, despite its darker themes. Author Kirk thinks it would be too difficult to survive in the police force without having a sense of humor and he has attempted to replicate that in his book as well.

The story is not a comedy in any sense, but some of the characters have a seam of humor in them. Kirk claims that the story is loosely inspired by a true story. Once, he was out on a walk with his dog and his daughter in the woods and when the dog went deep into the trees and couldn’t come back, he asked his daughter to stay put until he comes back with the dog. When Kirk returned after a few minutes, he could not find her anywhere. Suddenly, she popped up and frightened him. But, he felt quite helpless in that terrifying moment and the thought of his daughter being abducted by someone stuck in his mind several weeks, eventually inspiring him to use it in his debut novel. Whenever someone asks Kirk for advice about how to begin working on their first book, he tells them to take out some time from their obsession with writing, live a little bit, and then continue to work harder.

The DCI Logan series written by author J.D. Kirk is comprised of 4 books in total, all of which were released in 2019. In each book, DCI Jack Logan is depicted as the main character, who works for the Major Incident Team of the Glasgow Police Department. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘A Litter of Bones’. It was released by the Zertex Crime publication. Initially, it is depicted that Jack Logan had caught a serial killer 10 years ago. Although his dedication and determination towards his work earned him a commendation, it resulted in a broken marriage and a subsequent drinking problem. Now, Jack Logan spends his days investigating petty crimes and his nights by visualizing the horrors of that fateful night.

One day, Jack Logan learns about the recent kidnapping of a boy several miles away from the Highlands and is given the task of bringing him back. As he begins to investigate the abduction case, Logan finds striking similarities between the old one and the latest case. And as more evidence is found proving more similarities between the 2 cases. Jack Logan grows the suspicion that he might have gotten the wrong man. It gives him chilling thoughts to think that the serial killer might still be roaming freely. Jack Logan becomes determined not to let another innocent child become the victim of the serial killer and sets out to catch him and close his chapter once and for all. This explosive debut novel emerged as an exciting new entry in the Scottish crime thriller genre.

The second intriguing installment of the series is known as ‘Thicker Than Water’. It was also published by Zertex Crime in 2019. This book opens with the discovery of a badly mutilated dead body near the Loch Ness shores. Before this discovery, DCI Jack Logan was living a quiet life. But, the emergence of this new case has caused the quiet and peace to get shattered. The nature of the wounds on the victim’s body makes the people believe that a monster might have attacked him. As a result, the media start speculating the presence of monsters in the woods and this causes panic to spread among the people of the town. Jack Logan and his team know that it is not the work of a monster, but a killer has committed the brutal crime. They act fast and begin trailing his tracks to catch him before he plans to run away or target another innocent victim. Jack starts sensing it to be the toughest case of his career because of the mounting pressure from politicians and the media, and the arrival of an old foe. As the challenge of solving this case continues to get tougher, Jack becomes much more vigilant and determined. He knows that if he is not careful enough, the case might become the last one of his career. This book is also fast-paced and has a combination of suspense and dark humor.

My neighbours must wonder what on earth is happening around midnight when there is a burst of raucous laughter emanating from my (widow) bedroom. I just love DCI Jack Logan and entourage. Wonderful stories and so many new Scottish words. Expert cussing adds much flavour to black humour and scary crimes. Cheers from NZ. Keep writing ✍️

The DCI Logan books have me gripped. I started listening to them to help on my 35k miles a year I spend in the car. I just can’t listen to the radio now. They are gripping from start to finish. Bring back so many memories of expressions and words from my child hood.
There are moments of crying with laughter to sitting on the edge of my seat in terror.

Brilliant series and recommend to any crime thriller fan

What can I say about the DCI Logan Thrillers, they have had me completely hooked from the beginning. I’m on the last one and saving it as I don’t want them to stop. It’s been lovely getting to know the team, all great characters. I love the way they are written, every one a different twist. I have never laughed so much reading a thriller but these books are everything roller into one. I LOVE them! As for Hoon…well could you imagine working for him, he’s hilarious yet I feel sorry for him, just the right amount of involvement in each book. Please keep writing Mr Kirk!!!!!

I was given the first three Jack Logan books as part of my retirement gift when I finished after 28 years at the local primary school earlier this year. Having enjoyed those I bought the subsequent books. Today I finished Colder than the Grave. Brilliant series but am at a loss now. I hope there will be further books to enjoy.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series of books, particularly
because of the natural flow of conversation between the characters.
I have just read The Last Bloody Straw out of sequence and must say
I was confronted by the xenophobic and ‘othering’ treatment inflicted
on the Australian character. Considering how previous ‘foreign’ criminal
characters in the series are never referred to as ‘they’ and their accents
not dismissed as not worth trying to understand, I wonder why
Australians are singled out for this particular abuse?

There are many books of this genre (crime/police procedurals) and I have read most of them. None come close to JD Kirk. His tight writing style moves the action at pace. He knows how to twist a plot and build the tension. At the same time the stories are riddled with wit and humour. These stories have spoiled me for all other authors. Although he writes fast, any chance he can pick up the pace?

I have read everything you write and am very fond of your characters and the living breathing authenticity you achieve without adverbalizing them to death. Great writing and good plots. With my kindle I can check words that I do not know, however, the fizzling frustration of some of your characters just make up words and I think that is just fantastic. Unless, Kindle didn’t get the Scottish into its dictionary yet?! In any case, love your work, and therefore you as well.
