The American writer Tom Harris has been writing for quite some time now, having produced a large quantity of science-fiction books that are appreciated the world over. With a number of fans from far and wide, he has created a long and extensive line of books that are rich in narrative structure and their approach to the genre and form. Not only that, but his characters are also well drawn, as they don’t get submerged within a lot of the plot-line and scope, something which would be the downfall of many lesser writers. Going under the name of T.R. Harris for short, he is a novelist who approaches the art-form in a serious manner, whilst simultaneously knowing how to have fun at the same time. One such series is that of his ongoing ‘Human Chronicles’ collection of novels, which have garnered a lot of attention over the course of its long and extensive run. Essentially creating a saga set beyond the stars it followed the adventures of one Adam Cain, as he would find himself in an alien world, with sights and sounds that are completely new to him. Attempting to make the most of his situation, he attempts to find himself here, looking to keep surviving, all whilst being at odds with the world around him, as well as being disgruntled at being abducted in the first place.
With over twenty-four books in the series overall so far and counting, this is one series that has the potential to continue expanding indefinitely. Published by T.R. Harris himself through his own label, it is a success story in the world of publishing that has managed to turn the heads of many within the industry as, not only has he published it entirely himself, but he has also marketed it completely on his own too. This has given him complete control over his output, allowing him to tackle the story in the manner in which he wants to, thus ensuring that it is an entirely singular vision.
The Fringe Worlds
First brought out in 2011 through the ‘Harris Publications’ publishing label, this was to be the first book in the ongoing ‘Human Chronicles’ series of novels. Setting up the central premise and much of the action, it would manage to create a whole new world for the reader, as well as introducing the central protagonist for the first time too. It would also work at establishing much of the style and the tone to come as well, allowing the story to come alive in the process, with a lot of foreshadowing of what was to follow.
With a sense of wit and humor, this is a story that really draws the reader in, making them very much feel as if they are a part of the narrative action. The character of Adam Cain is also a well drawn and fun central protagonist, as he attempts to go about his new life on an alien planet, seeing the narrative through his eyes. With a great sense of scope and scale too, it really manages to make the most of its locations too, as it brings them all to life for the reader, with both style and substance.
Abducted from his nice, happy, normal life back on Earth where he had all of his friends and family, Adam Cain is taken to a far off alien planet. Here he is the only human, something which puts him at an advantage, as he’s far stronger than everyone else and, not only that, but he’s also a Navy SEAL as well. The only problem is is that he is now disgruntled about being forced to leave his old life behind him and, for that, he is going to make everyone around him pay. How far will he go? Can he make a new life for himself? Will he ever leave the Fringe Worlds?
Alien Assassin
Originally released in 2012 on the 24th of February, this was once again brought out Harris’s own label of ‘Harris Publications’, as it would continue on directly from the last. Carrying on in much the same vein as the first, it seeks to recapture the style and the tone of the original, whilst also saying something new of its own in the process. It also manages to progress the character of Adam Cain as a central protagonist too, moving his character forwards in the process, whilst also giving him another adventure.
Once again knowing and managing exactly what it sets out to do, this novel fits in snugly to the overall series as the second thrilling adventure. Seeing Adam Cain finally come to terms with where he is and who he is in this new alien landscape, it manages to also move his character on developing him in the process. Broadening its horizons too, it manages to build upon the world, giving it an even greater sense of scale and scope, whilst also not overindulging itself as well.
Now an assassin for the alien forces, Adam Cain makes a living completing intergalactic contracts, as he travels across the galaxy fulfilling missions of the most dangerous kind. Taking on unsavory forces, he is one of the most deadly assassins in the galaxy, that is until he meets up with his main rival following the mysterious death of his once benefactor. Finding a hidden army of fellow humans, Adam rallies them to squash an alien plan involving the Klin, as they are looking to threaten the entire human race. Will Cain be able to stop it in time? Can he make a difference? What will become of the alien assassin?
The Human Chronicles Series
A fun and engaging series that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this franchise manages to draw in the reader, taking them across the universe on an exciting and thrilling journey. Filled with adventure and wonder, it really does what it sets out to do, as it definitely knows and understands its genre, turning it effectively on its head throughout. With its legacy continuing to live on, many readers will carry on discovering this series for many years to come, as it will stand the test of time for many years yet.
