The Ruby Key
As the first book in the Sun and Moon book series, the Ruby Key is a fantasy tale, which begins like a human and non-human tale. To maintain the old truce and promises, the humans make a yearly sacrifice. By doing this, the non-humans do not tresspass the territories set, but they also avoid harming the human beings. In this book, the nightlings or non-human spirits are just like elves. Their faces are not only ethereal but are also delicate. Their skin color is either blue or yellow while their order is much higher than that of human beings. However, it does not take before everything becomes clear. The system which was in place had worked for so many years; however, it seems as if it is slowly breaking down in Genna’s village. Gena’s father who fell ill with an exceedingly strange illness has finally disappeared, and their mother is showing similar symptoms that their father had.
While all this is happening, their uncle has taken over the throne of the village. However, unlike the previous ruler, the Uncle is ruling less wisely and has even forced Genna’s mother to become his wife. With the aim of healing their mother, Dan and Genna do the unthinkable. Genna, who is 14 years of age, together with Dan, her twelve-year-old brother are on a mission to gather magical sap, which they would use on their dying mother. However, collecting magical sap during this time of the year is exceedingly risky since it is collected in the nightlings territory. However, Yarri, a nightling girl meets with the two kids and takes them to the ruler of the nightlings, Kai-Lord. The Kai-Lord is a tyrant who has made an exceedingly terrible bargain with the chieftain of the human village.
However, the two together with the other villagers are in great danger because, the king wants a nightling boy to be brought back to him. With that said, this was a brilliantly written novel. All the characters both the main and supporting characters are interesting and engaging. Gennadara is exceedingly intriguing; despite being timid, her determination is still commendable. Holly Lisle has created an immense and exceedingly interesting world. She also does an excellent job of describing the environment in a manner which brilliantly conveys the dank and dark mood of the novel. All in all, this book that has been well-written and the author shows that she has an exceedingly unique skill of creating an intelligent and readable style of writing.
