Holly Black is one of the famous and bestselling American authors of the contemporary and fantasy genres. Other than being a writer, she is also a reputed editor and producer. Many of her novels based on the children’s fantasy and horror genres have become bestsellers in a number of countries worldwide.
Holly is particularly well known for writing down the novels of the very popular Spiderwick Chronicles series. The success of the novels of the series also goes to the author, Tony DiTerlizzi as much as Holly, because he has collaborated with her in a considerable way in writing down the novels of the Spiderwick Chronicles series.
Apart from this novel series, author Holly has written a few other successful novel series’ in her writing career. One of them is the Modern Tale of Faerie series, which is based on the young adult genre. Holly was born on November 10, 1971 in West Long Branch, New Jersey, United States.
During the early growing years of author Holly her family used to live in a decrepit old house of the Victorian age in New Jersey. She grew up in the same house and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of New Jersey in the subject of English in the year 1994. After her education, she began working for a journal house as a production editor on the medical journals.
One of the famous journals that she worked on is The Journal of Plain. During that time, Holly also enrolled herself at the Rutgers University for her higher studies. Thinking of having a backup career. Holly considered herself becoming a librarian. But, she was drawn away because of her interest in writing novels. By then, Holly had contributed to the role playing culture magazine named d8 by editing it in the year 1996.
In the year 1999, she got married to her high school sweetheart named Theo Black, who is an accomplished web designer and illustrator. Holly had stated in the year 2008 that she was living with her husband in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Author Holly Black started her writing career in the year 2002 when her first novel was published. The sequel to the first novel ‘Tithe’, titled ‘Valiant’ went on to win the Andre Norton Award in the category of the best young adult and fantasy novel of the year in its inaugural function in the year 2005. Her novels Valiant and Ironside ranked 4th and 6th in the list of the top young adult novels of the year by the Locus Awards.
Holly began working on the Spiderwick Chronicles series in the year 2003. The 5th novel of the series went on to feature on the top of the list of New York Times Bestseller novels of the year 2004. The success of the series allowed it to be adapted into a movie in the year 2008. A 5-book series called as Magisterium, which was co-written by authors Holly Black and Cassandra Clare, who is also her best friend, was acquired by the Scholastic in the year 2012.
The series is optioned by the Constantin Films production house to make a film based on it. Holly has also written dozens of short stories and has co-edited three anthologies in her career. She has also served as the co-executive producer of the movie adaptation of the series, Spiderwick Chronicles. The film is based entirely on the novel series. Author Holly has also allowed the series to be released as a video game developed by the Stormfront Studios.
The Modern Faerie Tales series written by author Holly Black consists of a total of 3 novels published between the years 2002 and 2007. Each novel of the series features a different set of characters and plot setting.
The first novel of the series was published in the year 2002 by the Margaret K. McElderry Books publishing house. It was titled ‘Tithe’ and revolved around the lives of the central characters Kaye Fierch, Cornelius Stone, Janet Stone, Ellen Fierch, and Rath Roiben Rye.
The plot of the novel is set in New Jersey, United States. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Kaye Fierch is introduced as 16 year old modern nomad. He is described by the author as an independent and a fierce person. Kaye is required to along with the rock band with her mother from city to city. She continues to do it as a regular pattern in her life until she is involved in an ominous attack, which forces her to be back to the house where she has spent her childhood days.
There in her hometown, Kaye Fierch lands in the middle of the industrial and the blue collar backdrop of New Jersey. Soon, she finds herself as an unwilling pawn stuck in a century old power struggle between two arch rival faerie kingdoms. The power struggle seems to be dangerous for her and could cost her her life if she does not act quickly and find a solution to get out it.
The success of the novel allowed it to be nominated for the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award in the Children’s Literature category in the year 2008. It was also nominated for the Abraham Lincoln Award in the same year. The second novel of the series was published under the title ‘Valiant’.
It was published by the Simon Pulse publishing house in the year 2005.
The plot of the novel revolves around the lives of the main characters Luis, Ravus, and Valerie Russell and is set in the New York City, New York, United States. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Valerie Russell is introduced as 17 year old girl who runs away from her home to the New York City. She attempted to do so in order to escape from her life that has betrayed utterly. Valerie takes up a new identity and joins a gang of squatters living in the labyrinthine subway system in New York City.
But, there seems to be something beguiling about the new friends of Valerie Russell. When one of her new friends persuades her to track down the lair of a mysterious and weird creature, she finds out that all of them are involved with it. Soon, she finds herself torn between her new affection for the honorable monster and her sense of fear about seeing her new friends becoming something else. The novel became highly successful and went on to be nominated for a couple of prestigious awards like the Andre Norton Award in the year 2005 and the Mythopoetic Award in the year 2008. It was also shortlisted for The Inky Awards for Silver Inky in the year 2007
