Hailey Piper is an American author who is best known for her “Worms and His Kings” series of novels. She grew up in the haunted woods of New York and she was just seven when she made use of Michael Crichton as her muse, as she wrote stories about dinosaurs.
Through further writing and reading over many years, she developed her craft and is now known for novels that are usually themed on the marginalized and the powerless. For Hailey Piper, horror is a genre of honesty where she explores human desires and human nature which shape how we see the world and who we are.
She has been a winner of the Bram Stoker Award, is an active member of the Horror Writers Association, and made the final shortlist for the Locus Award Finalist. Her stories and articles have appeared in the likes of Cosmic Horror Monthly, Tor Nightfire, Cast of Wonders, CrimeReads, Vastarien, Pseudopod, and Library Journal.
Hailey currently makes her home in Maryland, where she lives with her wife and spends most weekends singing to the moon and summoning goat monsters.
Even though Hailey Piper started telling stories as a seven-year-old, she hardly remembers any of those stories, as she used to ask adults to write them down for her. The first story that Hailey penned all on her own was a knock-off of Jurassic Park when she was eight years old.
It was a short story no longer than seven pages which was inspired by the Michael Crichton work she had recently read. However, it was not until she read “It” by Stephen King as a sixteen-year-old, that writing would then become a passion for Piper.
As for how she got into horror, she had always had a lot of fun being scared and just like now, she finds horror to be thrilling. To Hailey Piper, there is no genre more truthful than horror, as fearful characters are usually true to themselves making readers feel for them most.
Some of the prominent influences while she was still in her teenage years include the likes of Nail Gaiman, Ramsey Campbell, and Shirley Jackson. She has also been influenced by modern authors such as Stephen Graham Jones, Sara Tantlinger, and Caitlin R. Kiernan.
Hailey Piper got started in the Indie world in 2018. It was in that year that she self-published her very first short stories.
She would then self-publish the ebook that would become “The Possession of Natalie Glasgow,” which she published in 2019. It was this that would get her noticed as “Ladies of Horror Fiction” and “Sci-Fi & Scary” took note of the novel and provided her with much support.
Piper now has at least a dozen works of fiction to her name and continues to write. She now writes most of her novels from a corner desk next to the household bookshelf from where she writes, even though she moves with her notebook everywhere in the house, just in case she gets a good idea.
Hailey has a very strict routine and usually gets up at 4 or 5 am to write before heading to work since she is a morning person. During the weekends, she usually writes till noon which is when her wife usually wakes up.
She believes having a routine is helpful for her focus and she has now come to associate mornings with writing, as she is then less prone to mismanaging her time or getting distracted.
When Hailey Piper is not writing her books, she can usually be found trying to clear her to-be-read pile of books which is quite huge. She can also be found working her day job, taking care of household chores, going to the movies, and watching a movie they have not watched every week.
Hailey Piper’s “The Worm and His Kings” is a work set in New York in 1990 that introduces the lead as Monique.
She finds herself living on the streets following a set of unfortunate circumstances. Her girlfriend Donna slipped through the cracks and has gone missing. It is an unfortunate thing since in the Big Apple what is one more person amid millions?
Given that she does not believe that anyone will help her, she decides to work all on her own to resolve the mystery of her lover’s appearance. But then she hears that there is a monstrous creature that has been walking the streets and taking women from the streets, she wonders if maybe it took Donna too.
We follow Monique as she trawls the streets, walks the grimy and gritty underbelly of the city, and then descends the wormhole similar to “Alice in Wonderland.” She finds herself in an alien, disorienting, and shadowy subterranean world that defies the law of understanding and logic.
Despite the new reality which to just about anyone would be mind-shattering, she will do anything to find Donna. She will tear the universe apart if by doing so she finds her loved one.
Hailey Piper does a good job grounding the story in reality through love, even as she combines it with cosmic otherworldly horrors.
Hailey Piper’s novel “Even the Worm Will Turn” is a work set in 1994, four years following the events of the debut. It is a story that brings back the solve survivor Donna Ashton, who somehow got out of the cavernous realms under the streets of New York.
She was a lawyer before she got sacked given Reagan-era prejudices that were not so friendly toward gay people. Since that time, she had been working as a clerk at some small firm as she picked up pieces of her life with her off-again, on-again girlfriend.
However, she finds herself kidnapped by “Engine,” a shadowy organization under a hard-tempered woman named Azara McCann, who is also known for her predilection for red suits. She says that she is the daughter of one of the cultists who had taken Donna several years earlier.
Donna has to relive the trauma all over again, even as she deals with unresolved grief ever since she lost Monique Lane her girlfriend, who lost her life trying to get her out of her dark predicament.
