November 26 1919, in Brooklyn New York City Frederick George Pohl junior was born. What his parents did not know is the legendary author and editor they were raising. His career saw a critic using poems, teaching, magazine editor and a creative writer. He put a record on fiction stories and maintains it years after his death.
He published his first work back in 1937 at a tender age of 18 years. Elegy to a Dead’, was a masterpiece that was an indication of the potential talent that Frederik Pohl had. This marked the start of a journey with numerous awards and publications that are books of reference in learning institutions. His teaching career was a success basing his lectures on future studies.
Among his awards were the French Prix Apollo, Edward E. Smith and Donald A. Wollheim memorial awards and the “Grand Master” Nebula for lifetime contributions to the field. In some of the awards, Pohl maintained his top rank for a number of times: Hugo awards (six times) and the Nebula award (three times). His works had recognition even by non-science-fiction community and bagged awards such as the Popular Culture Association and the American Book Award.
Due to Frederik Pohl’s talent and great writings, he was a Fellow to the British and American Science institutions where in addition, wrote non-fiction books. Chasing Science, Our Angry Earth and Practical Politics are among his historic books that addressed real life issues. He was a valuable government asset as he could write on about anything such as the Encyclopedia Britannica that formed basis of the first Roman Emperor.
With such interesting and dramatic stories from Frederik Pohl, TV shows and movies have their storylines on their basis. Among them is the German special based on his book The Midlas Plague while The Space Merchants formed a basis for a Columbian Air workshop. His dramatic expression always gave these developments unique and interesting reviews from viewers.
Frederik Pohl’s works had made a global tourist off him. He represented the USA in international conferences, both science and non-science. Together with his wife, Dr. Anne Hull, they pioneered most of the Science Fiction Associations and chaired some like the Science Fiction Research Association.
His death on 2 September 2013 shook the world despite his old age. He was celebrated for his massive writing works and his achievements in science. He was a legend that the authors’ fraternity regretted to lose.
An overview of Frederik Pohl’s career
Pohl was a hardworking writer who has almost 500 publications under his name. His art of creating fictional stories seemed to catch the imagination power of many. The nonfiction books cover real life occurrences such as politics and environmental issues. With such a basis, he could reach almost everyone in the world.
One of his celebrated books was the Gateway. It had a review rating of over four and formed a basis of the Heechee Saga 1 while Beyond the Blue Event Horizon bore Heechee Saga 2. The sagas reach episode six each with a different book and concept. In their respective orders, the books are Heechee Rendezvous, the Annals of the Heechee, the Gateway Trip and the Boy Who Would Live Forever, a Novel of Gateway. This book was the basis of the basis of the Clonemaster, a popular 1981 NBC television show.
His books had enticing titles and stories that will always leave you looking for his next book. Another series of drama is the Space Merchants. The story was dramatic and real enough to base a German show that had great reviews then. Frederik Pohl’s two books, the Space Merchants and the Merchants’ War completed the merchant series. His view of the unseen world and its incorporation to the present world gave his books a good read.
“The Tunnel under the World” was another novelette that was very creative and interesting. The imaginary scenarios he created in the novel caught the attention of Italy film developers. Computer game developers also liked his art and based some of the games on his work. Man Plus and Gateway formed a development basis for the legendary game, the Gateway 1 and 2. His originality and nature of presentation was iconic.
He had another series of books for a complementary story line. The’ Eschaton Sequence’ that had some scientific concepts added a taste of fiction. The storyline was unique and showed the talent that Pohl had. This series earned him scientific awards due to the nature of concepts he used. The Far Shore of Time and The Siege of Eternity gave the complete storyline of the Eschaton Sequence.
During his teaching career, he showed his view of future. Since he taught on future studies, he had many publications about the future world. Some of them were based on fiction but others had scientific facts that are used for learning purposes. The way the Future was, the Age of the Pussyfoot, the Coming of the Quantum Cats and the Other End of Time are among publications of the future under Frederik Pohl’s name. Based on some of his publications, some scientists have used his content to make his future and imaginations a reality.
Other than writings on the unseen world, Frederik Pohl tried to explain how nature works. This concept earned him many scientific honors as his work were an indication of a genius. Some of the things he explained in his publications were occurrences that were wonders for many. For instance, the books, Starchild Trilogy, Starburst, The Reefs of Space and Search the Sky tried to explain how the sky works. His secret was using a language that is understandable to explain his complex concepts.
He also had short story books that had interesting real and fictional stories. These are mainly favorites for kids especially for those books with the extra ordinary characters. Most of these short stories are in a single publication such as the Platinum Pohl and the iconic Best of Frederik Pohl. In these books, he shows his art and creativity about the extra ordinary world.
This man, Frederik Pohl
He was a great author and editor with a taste of creativity and imaginary aspects. His most recent novels are The World at the End of Time, Outnumbering the Dead, Stopping at Slowyear, The Voices of Heaven, O Pioneer, and The Siege of Eternity.
Frederik Pohl left a legacy in all that authoring and editing has to offer. His works are a mentor for upcoming authors.
