Frank Tallis is one of the Edgar Award nominated authors from The United Kingdom, who is famous for writing historical, mystery, suspense, and fantasy novels, and essays. He is also a popular clinical psychologist and has received a lot of prominence in this profession. Tallis is a specialist of obsessive disorder, a very efficient psychologist in this field. Author Tallis was born on September 1, 1958, in London. As a novelist, he likes to write detective novels. For writing some of his standalone novels, he uses the pen name of F.R. Tallis. His birth had taken place in the Stoke Newington borough of London. Author Tallis completed his graduation from the London University and obtained his Ph.D in the field of psychology. Immediately after his graduation, Tallis began teaching neuroscience and clinical psychology to the students of King’s College in London. In fact, he is still involved in teaching at the King’s College and manages it along with his other two professions. Tallis began publishing papers and essays on the subjects of psychotherapy history and human behavior in 1998, and since then he has released a few of them successfully. As far as the writing career of author Talliss is concerned, he is particularly popular for writing the Leibermann Papers series. He embarked on this successful novel series in the year 2005. This detective series features the chief character as the Vienna policeman named Oskar Rheinhardt. He is assisted by his acolyte and friend named Max Leibermann, who is depicted as a popular psychiatrist. Both these characters are believed to have historical importance from the time of the turn of 20th century in Vienna, Austria. They used to carry out investigations in imperial Vienna. Tallis has filled the series with rich intrigues, which tend to evoke the atmosphere of the Austro Hungarian Empire’s capital during the years prior to the World War One. All the narratives of this historical series are shown as often enamelling the encounters with some of the great historical personalities such as Gustav Mahler or Freud. Such narrations depict the political and historical events of that time with multiple annotations. With years of experience in psychological treatments, author Tallis has gone on to hold lecturing positions at the Psychiatry Institute, London, along with his teaching jobs as a professor of clinical psychology.

In addition to his popular novels, Tallis has also penned some self-help manuals over the years. He has even written some nonfiction stories aimed at the general readers, as well as several academic books and more than 30 academic papers in a number of international journals. In the year 1999, author Tallis was awarded with the Writers’ Award by the Great Britain Arts Council. And in the following year, he went on to win the Writers’ Award of New London from the Board of London Arts. One of his books, titled Mortal Mischief, was nominated for the prestigious Ellis Dagger Award in 2005, as well as for a Quais du Polar prize in Frane, in 2007. His other books have been shortlisted for many other popular awards and prizes over the years. The books from Tallis’ Leibermann series have been translated into as many as 14 different languages and have also been optioned for television adaptations. Currently, author Tallis is working as a consultant of clinical psychology at Charter Nightingale Hospital, London. He is one of the trustees of the charitable organization called Obsessive Action, which helps the patients suffering from the OCD and the suffering families of all such patients.

The Leibermann Papers series written by Frank Tallis is comprised of a total of 6 books, which were released between the years 2005 and 2011. All the books of this series feature the central characters as Max Leibermann and Oskar Leinhardt. Leibermann is introduced as a psychoanalytic detective from Vienna, while Oskar Reinhardt is shown as an inspector in the Vienna police department. As the series progresses, a number of other secondary characters get added into the stories. The debut novel of the mystery series is entitled ‘A Death in Vienna’. It was published in 2007 by the Qanita Group, after being first released in 2005 under the title of Moral Mischief. Author Tallis has set the plot in Vienna, Austria, during the start of the twentieth century, and has depicted the important characters in the form of Charlotte Lowenstein, Oskar Reinhardt, and Max Leibermann. At the start of the book, it is shown that a message written in the form of a suicide note is found near Charlotte Lowenstein’s dead body. She was believed to be a mysterious woman. Her death had occurred from a gunshot and she was discovered from a room that was locked by someone from inside. What was surprising about Charlotte’s death was that no weapon was found near her, nor there was a trace of any bullet. Due to this, people began to think that either she might have committed suicide or her death might have occurred due to supernatural reasons. A huge storm had passed through the town on the night of Charlotte’s death, which made the speculations of a supernatural killing even firmer. When Max Leibermann comes to know about this case, he uses his sharp analytical skills and helps Oskar Reinhardt in solving the mystery behind Charlotte’s murder. Author Tallis has filled the story with rich descriptions of Vienna’s art, music, science, and philosophy, which make the book even more interesting to read.

The next mysterious book written in the series is called as ‘Vienna Blood’. Once again, the Qanita publication released it in 2007. At the beginning of this novel, author Tallis has mentioned that a number of mutilated dead bodies are found with strange symbols all over Vienna. The study of the victims shows that they were random people with no special background. The killings take place at the time of winter in Siberia, in 1902, which shakes the whole of Vienna and shocks the people. They develop the fear of a serial killer. During such difficult times, Max Leibermann appears again to help his close friend, Oskar Reinhardt, carry out the investigation related to the complex mystery. As the investigation progresses, the two friends are taken to an underground secret society, which consists of elite people connected to the German literature. The society also comprises of scientists and racial theorists. This secret society believed in the new evolution theory of UK. The members of the society seemed to have the attitude of a serial killer. Leibermann analysis helps Oskar solve the mystery about the serial killings. However, he gets stuck in the mystery involving his love and heart.

   I was reading the books around 2009-2010. Back then, I was thinking, “Wouldn’t these make a wonderful film or tv show?” I love the books and I’ve been watching the show for 2 weeks now. Absolutely love it all!

   I would like to know how Max and Oscar met. It is not in the first book and it should have been. I just got the books after seeing the PBS aired the serie. I loved the series and yes, Mr. Tallis should write more books with Max and Oscar.

   I only became aware of the Vienna Blood books when PBS aired its series (not even remotely as good as the books!). I read all the books with such urgency, and was totally demoralized when I discovered that Dr. Tallis had no others in the pipeline? Very sad for those of us who don’t wish to use our own imaginations for resolution of the wonderful characters!

     Yes, I agree with you completely. Mr. Tallis needs to carry on this wonderful series not only are the stories enchanting but I’ve learned so much about Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. A quite remarkable series.
