Eric Walters was born in Toronto on 3rd March 1957. He spent his early life in Toronto before joining York University to study psychology and social work. After his undergraduate degree, he embarked on a career as a social worker. Walters developed a passion for his work and he worked in different environments including child welfare settings, mental health institutions as well in private practice counseling. it was during this engaging career that he enrolled for a part-time masters degree in social work in York University.
Although Eric Walters was dedicated to social work and counseling, he had a soft spot for teaching and after acquiring his masters degree in social work from York University, he enrolled for a Bachelors degree in education and began teaching in elementary schools in Toronto. His teaching method inclined to engaging the learners, and he began writing short pieces for them. Some of the short novels tats he wrote for his students and other young learners were published and they became favorites for youths across the country.
In 1993, Eric Walters was attending to grade five learners at Vista Heights Public School located in Streetsville when he decided to write a novel, Stand Your Ground. The objective of the novel was to encourage the students to develop the right attitude towards literature and he, therefore, he gave it a touch of the local setting of which the learners had good acquaintance. Walters made it a habit of writing a novel for his class every year and he focused on the local issues.
Eric Walters is mostly known for his two novels, The Rule Of Three and Bifocal. The Rule Of Three was published in 2014 by Straus and Giroux and it is developed brick by brick to outline the responsibility of the common citizen when the government and social structures break down. The novel starts with power breakdown in a local school. The situation prompts the school to dismiss the students. Sixteen-year-old Adam drives home with his old car that is not computer operated. Adam and his neighbor Herb who has immense skills in analyzing people behavior and radio communication come up with an ultra-light plane that assists in analyzing the situation o the town. By using the light plane, they discover that there is a rebel group using sophisticated weapons to destabilize the town.
The residents of the town cannot access basic items like food and water, and they resort to looting. The police cannot contain the people and they enlist the help of some responsible citizens. Adam’s mother who is a local police captain places guards in various strategic positions to contain the looting. With the help of Herb, the selected citizens together with the fire captain, the police captain and a couple of other law enforcers devise a way of growing crops beneath the power lines as well as reinforcing walls around the town for their survival. The novel takes a calculated move that presents an almost real situation that calls for the collaboration of the authorities and citizens to work towards heir survival in desperate moments.
Bifocal, another of Eric Walters great novels and co-authored by Deborah Ellis won the ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year Award and the White Raven’s Outstanding New Intentional Books for Children and Adults. in the novel, Haroon, who is a dedicated football player and an immigrant from Afghanistan faces racial profiling on suspicion of terrorism. The students become hostile to Haroon and Jay to the point of setting a smoke bomb near their lockers. The two are aware that the set up was to depict them like terrorists due to their race. The novel hits the nail on racial discrimination that students face in learning institutions.Walter and Ellis are objective in outlining the negative effects of unnecessary profiling and generalization that makes the lives of other students difficult.
Besides his writing and teaching career, Eric Walters is a committed family man. He lives in Mississauga together with his wife Anita and his three children Julia, Nick and Christina. On average, Walters authors four books every year, and this makes him one of the greatest and most celebrated writer in the Canadian Literature arena. To expand his audience, Walter visits famous niches around the world, and he writes about the experiences in the specific places. In doing so, he gives the readers of his works first-hand information on the places he visits. For example, after visiting the Sahara Desert in 2010, he authored Just Deserts.
