Writing for both the screen and print, Emily Carpenter is an American former actor turned novelist with a gift for storytelling. Showing a real eye for character, she is able to get to the heart of her subject matter almost instantly, giving real insight into what makes them tick. With a visual flair too, she definitely knows how to combine drama, action and character, creating engaging and thrilling narratives that are difficult to put down.

Early and Personal Life

Growing up in Birmingham, Alabama, in America, the young Emily Carpenter would embark on a lifetime fascination with writing. Spending time as a child writing her version of ‘The Pokey Little Puppy’, she would grow to find her own voice over the years. Taking a lot of time out to explore the Birmingham Public Library she would manage to completely immerse herself in the world of literature throughout her childhood.

Gaining a BA in Communications from Auburn University, she would also achieve two minors in theater and journalism. This would allow her to embark on a career in the creative arts, giving her to voice with which to express herself in the years to come. It would also pave the way towards a career working within the media, allowing her to gain a far more prominent voice.

Working for CBS television she would go on to work at the Daytime Drama division in the years to follow. Reading numerous scripts there she would write the short summaries for the newspapers, giving her an insight into the story writing process. Later writing screenplays of her own, she would begin to make her own mark as a writer, finding her own footing within the industry.

Finally getting published, she now writes full-time for a living putting out work at a regular pace to consistent positive reviews. Finding her place within the industry, she is now her own writer making her own mark, speaking in the way that she wants. This will continue for many years to come, as she doesn’t seem to be stopping any time soon, with her writing career continuing on into the foreseeable future.

Writing Career

Bringing out her first book ‘Burying the Honeysuckle Girls’ in 2016, Carpenter would make her debut onto the literary scene with a Gothic work of fiction. Allowing her to write in a manner that is completely her own, it is a style that is almost poetical, evoking a definite brooding ambiance. Working as a stand-alone too, it manages to tell its own story, not being a part of any series, being entirely its own narrative.

Not writing any series as such, Carpenter opts for more stand-alone titles, although she is known for following thematic lines. Using a semi-Gothic style for many of her works, she writes in a rich and evocative style that conjures up an air of mystery. This is something that her fans have warmed to over the years, with her writing career coming a long way in a relatively short amount of time.

With a past working in the media Carpenter has managed to gain an insight into the industry quite unlike any other. Working as a production assistant behind the scenes of a soap-opera, as well as a screenwriter and a producer, she knows exactly what goes into making a quality story. This, along with being an actor for some time too, is what gives her her highly visual and extremely evocative style of writing as well.

Currently living in Georgia with her family after moving from New York City following her graduation, she has had a lot of experience. With a wealth of material to draw from she is never short of ideas for inspiration, something which clearly shows in her creative approach to her craft. This also goes some way towards explaining how she has come to be so respected by both her peers and contemporaries alike, as well as being a bestselling author with the general public.

There’s a lot more to come from Emily Carpenter as an author, as she regularly maintains a strong profile both online and off. This will continue in the years to come, as her career is making more and more of an impact, with larger audiences discovering her work every day. With her writing career growing from strength-to-strength, this will carry on for a long time to come, with plenty more planned on the horizon.

The Weight of Lies

Published on the 6th of June, this would be released through the ‘Lake Union Publishing’ label to much acclaim, taking her writing to even greater heights. Showing a clear development from the last as well, it manages to give the reader more of what they’ve now come to expect from Carpenter as an author.

For years Meg has managed to live the high-life, all due to her mother’s bestselling horror novel written years ago. Inspired by a murder over forty years ago, Meg has now been asked to write her own tell-all memoir, a book that will help her escape her mother’s shadow. That’s when she heads to Bonny Island and the birth-place of her mother’s book, as she meets a mysterious woman who will provide her with some uncomfortable home-truths behind the book. Will she learn the truth? Can she find out what really happened? How much responsibility does her mother hold behind the weight of lies?

Every Single Secret

Published by ‘Lake Union Publishing’ in 2018 on the 1st of May, this title shows how far Emily Carpenter has come since the beginning. With a clearly developed sense of style, she manages to create a psychological thriller that is both atmospheric and compelling in equal measure. Providing a self-contained story as well, it contains characters who are also extremely well drawn and carry along the narrative with panache.

With a mysterious past Daphne Amos has always held her secrets in, having shared an extremely emotionally guarded relationship with her fiance Heath. All this threatens to boil over, though, when Heath’s nightmares start coming to the forefront, and their psychologist, Dr. Matthew Cerny, advises them to tackle them head-on during a seven-day retreat. It is during this retreat, though, whereby they are all required to relinquish their personal items such as phones and keys, that they find not everything is as it seems. Who is really behind the mysterious retreat? What does Daphne discover one night about the institute after leaving her room? Can they learn the truth behind every single secret?
