Early and Personal Life
Living in the Pacific Northwest, Ellie Alexander has always had a passion for cooking and baking, something which is reflected within her work. An active and social writer, she always had a passion for literature from a very early age, along with her love of baking, as the two went hand-in-hand when creating her novels. A strong advocate for coffee-shop culture, she is usually found in one of the many that are located near to her home, as she looks for new stories and sources of inspiration. Spending a lot of time watching how people operate and understanding the nuances of these particular social interactions, she’s able to inject an element of realism that’s unparalleled. With an active life of hiking and exercise as well, she’s constantly keeping herself on the go and always active. This all adds up to maintaining a healthy perspective that really shines through in her work, as it enables her to articulate herself well.
With a well rounded education growing up, she has managed to put all of her experiences and insight into her work. Using a plethora of inspiration she has been able to carve herself a unique and interesting set of novels that capture the essence of the coffee-shop and her passion for baking. Not only that, but she has a little suspense thrown in their too for good measure, as her ability in keeping readers on the edges of their seats remains unrivalled.
Writing Career
Writing her first book only recently, she published Meet Your Baker in 2014 and it was to be the first of the bake-shop mysteries series. Followed up with another in 2015, she quickly produced the sequel A Batter of Life and Death the year after. Another two titled On Thin Icing and Caught Bread Handed are expected to come out shortly as well, as she continues this highly popular series.
Bringing out her first book, Meet Your Baker, in 2014, she was well on her way to becoming a highly regarded writer of cozy mysteries. Using her gift for suspense and intrigue, mixed with a large helping of warmth, humor and wit, she engage readers worldwide. With a love of cooking and baking as well, she was able to connect with her audience in a way few other writers have been able to. Set within the confines of a small town bake-shop she has a clear sense of location and knows exactly who her characters are. This gives her the room to manoeuvre freely and easily within its realms, creating a sense of familiarity for her audience that they’ve come to appreciate. Her characters have become well known due to this and have managed to ensure that the readers come back for more each time.
Not without critical acclaim as well, she has also managed to catch the eye of many of her peers within the literary establishment too. Giving talks and tours, she’s really managed to make a name for herself, creating a well established presence on the scene. This looks set to continue on into the foreseeable future as her career grows from strength-to-strength.
Meet Your Baker
Published towards the end of 2014 this was to be the book that started off the bake-shop mysteries series of novels. Setting up the characters and the initial premise it works to establish much of the overall tone that is to follow in the subsequent books. It also manages to provide everyone with their first mystery, getting straight into the action as they solve their first case.
Featuring the character of Juliet Capshaw, it sees her returning home to the town of Ashland in Oregon to take charge of the family bakery business after her time in culinary school. Soon somebody turns up dead though following the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, as it also transpires they were a regular to her shop the Torte-a Friendly. Not only that, her high-school sweetheart Thomas turns up to complicate things as he’s working on the case and it appears that there’s still a spark between them. Can they find the killer of the Nancy Hudson, the Lady Macbeth to be for the Oregon Shakespeare Company? Will Juliet and Thomas ever become an item? What will occur as they discover what happens when you meet your baker?
A Batter of Life and Death
Written as the follow up to Meet Your Baker, A Batter of Life and Death was initially brought out in 2015 as the direct sequel to the first. Continuing on from the first, this once again sees Juliet, or Jules, Capshaw embroiled in the case of another murder. Further establishing the style, tone and characters of the series, it manages to build upon what came before creating a far more well defined world for the franchise as a whole.
Competing for a top prize of $25,000, Jules enters her bake-shop into a reality show on The Pastry Channel called Take the Cake that has everyone talking. The problem is that some people would kill for that much coveted top prize and will stop at nothing to get their hands on it. Turning up to spoil the mix and make this fear a reality is the corpse of top chef Marco, as his body is soon discovered on set, transforming it from a simple cookery program to one of true crime. Who could have done such a terrible thing and why? Can they solve the case before the killer strikes again? What will become of them all as they discover a case that’s a batter of life and death?
