Elizabeth Massie is an American published author.
Born in 1953, she is married to Cortney Skinner, an illustrator. Together they reside outside Waynesboro, Virginia and have two children together.
Massie does a lot of work with Amnesty International having been a member for over 35 years and writing letters of behalf of people who have been victims of human rights abuses over the globe.
She is a Virginian and her family goes back living in the state for eight generations. She has been writing on a professional basis since 1984. She has written everything from skits to articles, poems, poetry, short fiction, novels, and more. Elizabeth enjoys knitting, hiking, geocaching, visiting amusement parks, and more.
She is the founder of the Hand to Hand Vision Project to help others. She has a home office but likes to go to Starbucks to work some days.
Elizabeth has won the Bram Stoker Award two times. She has also won the Scribe Award for her Tudors novelization. She is known for writing horror novels as well as suspense fiction, historical fiction, nonfiction for American history textbooks and testing programs, media tie-ins, and short fiction for adults. She also writes books for middle school readers and teens.
Elizabeth Massie was given the Horror Writers Association Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.
She has also departed from horror with her nonfiction memoir and religious beliefs book titled On the Outside Looking Up: Seeking and Following God Beyond the Gates of Organized Religion. It is a spiritual memoir as well as an invitation to believers who have not been to church ever or in some time. Elizabeth has been a believer and a member of her faith for years.
Her Ameri-Scares series is being developed into something for television from Warner Horizon of Warner Brothers, LuckyChap, and Assemble Media.
Her first short story in the horror genre came out in The Horror Show magazine in 1984. It was titled “Whittler”. She has also had horror fiction published in more places since then, including anthologies and magazines such as Best New Horror, Best New Fantasy and Horror, Splatterpunks, Grue, Inhuman Magazine, Kolchak the Night Stalker: Casebook, and A Whisper of Blood.
Additionally, her book Abed was optioned to be made into a short film. She also created the horror cartoon “Skeeryvilletown”, which features monsters and creatures that are everything from Boo Boy to 3-Eyed Devil Cat to Bonehead, Rattie, Battie, the Witch Sisters, and Fire Breathing Dog O’Death, as well as Boo Boy and Wolfie.
Lock Her Room is a short film that came out in 2003 on Showtime based on her story “Lock Her Room”. She has written a ton of historical fiction for readers, extending to the Young Founders series, the Daughters of Liberty, and more. She has also written Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Powers of Persuasion.
Elizabeth Massie wrote the teleplay for the PBS special Rhymes and Reasons. The special was the recipient of a Parents’ Choice Award. Additionally, she offers workshops in creative writing for everyone from students in third grade extending all the way up to college. She is also active in Charlottesville’s Amnesty International Group 157.
