Elephant & Piggie series by Mo Willems
Author Mo Willems pens the “Elephant & Piggie” series of children’s books. These books are meant for early readers and the books are done in a comic book style. The series began publication in the year 2007, when “Today I Will Fly!” was released. Mo Willems ended the series with “The Thank You Book”, the twenty-fifth book in the series, that was released in the year 2016.
The books are released on a near quarterly schedule, and sometimes, two books will be released on the same day. This includes how the first two books of the series were released.
The series stars Gerald, an elephant, and Piggie. Gerald’s appear in grey letter bubbles, while Piggie’s words appear in pink letter bubbles. These stories often address problems of friendship, and show things like sharing, kindness, and working together to solve different problems. The books show that despite Piggie and Gerald’s differences, they still get along.
Elephant Gerald is also the name of Mo’s favorite singer, but you have to say the name fast. On the other hand, Piggie is named Piggie because when she was born she looked like a little Piggie, plus, Cher, Madonna, and Beyonce had already been taken.
According to Mo, he drew simple drawings and emphasized the most important things: Elephant and Piggie’s body language and the words of the story.
“There is a Bird on Your Head!” and “Are You Ready to Play Outside?” won the Geisel Medal in the year 2008 and the year 2009. Two of the books have listed on Time’s Top 10 Children’s Books of the Year: “Elephants Cannot Dance!” (number 5 in 2009) and “Today I Will Fly!” (ranked number 2 in 2007). The books won Geisel Honors in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015.
There has been a musical produced that is based off of the “Elephant and Piggie” series of books.
“Today I Will Fly!” is the first novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2007. Gerald is careful, while Piggie is not. Piggie is unable to keep from smiling, while Gerald can. Gerald is the worrier, so Piggie does not have to. Gerald and Piggie are a pair of best friends. Piggie is determined to take off and fly, but Gerald knows that this is impossible. Isn’t it?
The pictures in this book are engaging, funny, active, and dramatic, without a lot of distracting detail. All of the text is dialogue, which is all funny and exciting with plenty of exclamation points to go around. The repetition here feels natural, and doesn’t make the story feel boring.
“My Friend is Sad” is the second novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2007. Gerald is currently down in the dumps. Piggie is determined to cheer him right up by dressing as a clown, a cowboy, and even a robot! What does it take to make a sad elephant happy. The answer to this question is going to make even the most pessimistic of elephants smile.
“I am Invited to a Party!” is the third novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2007. Piggie gets invited to her very first party. She does not know what to wear, however, and asks Gerald for help. His advice, though, is strange to say the very least. Piggie is going to try on all kinds of zany outfits, all before showing up at the party for a hilarious surprise.
“There Is a Bird on Your Head” is the fourth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2007. Gerald finds there is something worse than having one bird on your head. Two birds on your head. Will Piggie be able to help her best friend out?
For some readers, this is the best and the funniest book from the series. Once the bird lands on Gerald’s head, things just get crazy. It is an enjoyable and sublimely ridiculous read.
“I Love My New Toy!” is the fifth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2008. Piggie cannot wait to show off her new toy to Gerald. Is an accidentally broken toy going to accidentally break up a friendship?
“I Will Surprise My Friend!” is the sixth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2008. Gerald and Piggie would like to play a game and surprise one another, but the biggest surprise of all is the one that they least expect.
“Are You Ready to Play Outside?” is the seventh novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2008. Piggie cannot wait to get out and go play in the sunshine. Is a rainy day going to ruin all of the fun?
“Watch Me Throw the Ball!” is the eighth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2009. Gerald is determined to show Piggie that throwing a ball is serious business. Piggie is as determined to have some serious fun the whole time.
“Elephants Cannot Dance!” is the ninth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2009. Piggie attempts teaching Gerald some new moves. Is Gerald going to teach Piggie something that is much more important?
“Pigs Make Me Sneeze!” is the tenth novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2009. Gerald thinks that he is allergic to his best friend, despite going on nine previous adventures with one. Is he going to have to stay away from Piggie forever.
“I Am Going!” is the eleventh novel in the “Elephant and Piggie” series, which was released in the year 2009. Piggie ruins what was a perfectly good day by informing Gerald that she is going. If Piggie does go, who is Gerald going to play Ping-Pong with, skip with, and wear their silly hats with?
