Ed James is one of the highly successful novelists from Scotland, who likes to write his books based on the crime fiction and thriller genres. He is particularly well known for writing down the Scott Cullen series that features the police procedurals of Scotland. Set in Edinburgh and in the surrounding Lothian region, the series depicts the life activities of a young Detective Constable from Edinburgh, Scotland, named Scott Cullen, who investigates the crimes in the city. Starting from the bottom, he climbs up the career ladder of his detective career desperately. The first book in the series, titled as ‘Ghost in the Machine’, was made free to download by author James and it has been downloaded for around 400,000 times. It even went on to be included in the list top 5 novels in both Amazon UK and Amazon US. All the novels of the Scott Cullen series were self-published by author James. Apart from this series, he also publishes books under the Thomas and Mercer imprint. Author James has also released several books of the DS Dodds based in Dundee as well as those featuring the Detective Inspector Simon Fenchurch as the lead character. James has depicted DI Simon Fenchurch as investigating the crimes that take place in the east end of London. Other than these crime fiction series, author James also writes a vampire-based series called as Supernature, which features vampires and similar folkloric creatures. The first book of this series has been released and has also been made free by the author. Ed James was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, The United Kingdom.
Currently, he resides in the countryside of the East Lothian, which is located around 25 miles to the east of Edinburgh. He lives with his girlfriend, several moggies, a few greyhounds, and a flock of chickens, and some rescue ducks. Initially, author James used to work in an IT firm. Whatever spare time he used to get, he used to use it for writing freelance books and stories. Mainly, his writings were based on public transport. Author James was very much inspired by the famous works of popular novelists like Mark Billingham, David Peace, Ian Rankin, James Ellroy, Iain Bank, and many others. This motivated him to begin writing his novels with a more seriousness ad dedication. Very soon, he resigned from his IT job and began writing full time. As of today, author James writes full time from his home and maintains all his focus towards developing the novels of his thriller and crime fiction series. Author James says that the IT job seemed to have a promising career in the future at the project management level. But, he had to give it up in order to focus on writing as a full time author. He used to fill his commutes to London on a weekly basis by writing on trains, automobiles, and planes. Initially, author James was able to complete a total of 3 full length books in the first 7 months of his writing career. Later on, he picked up some speed and has now written and published a number of novels in his career.

This crime fiction series is comprised of a total of 7 books, which were published between the years 2012 and 2015. All the books in the series feature the lead character in the form of Scott Cullen, which works as a Detective Constable in the Crime Investigation Department in Lothian, located near Edinburgh, Scotland. One of the books released initially in the crime series is known as ‘Devil in the Detail’. This novel was self-published by author James in the form of a Kindle edition in the year 2012. The story described by author James in this book takes place in Scotland, The United Kingdom. Just like the previous book in the series, this book too gives a description about the police procedurals in Edinburgh, featuring DC Scott Cullen. The intriguing story of this book is often compared to the likes of Mark Billingham, Ian Rankin, and Stuart MacBride. In the opening scene of the novel, it is shown that Garleton is one of the typical towns located in East Lothian, which is historic, affluent, and also has a good school. This town is torn apart on a January morning with the discovery of the dead body of a girl named Mandy Gibson. Mandy was the daughter of one of the pillars of the town’s community. Soon, Detective Constable Cullen, who is still in the middle of trying to solve the puzzle of a previous case, is asked to travel east and take over the case. Cullen’s DI and a local Sergeant named Bill Lamb make things difficult for him as he gets stuck between them. Moreover, the hunt for the bad boy of the town makes him become embroiled. Some important clues that he is able to collect make Scott Cullen wonder whether the small religious group the family members of Mandy Gibson attend have to do anything with the crime? The case becomes more and more difficult to solve with the passage of time, which increases the pressure on Scott Cullen as well. He is required to catch the main culprit and solve the case as soon as possible for his reputation as well.
The next book in the Scott Cullen Mystery series written by author Ed James was published under the title ‘Fire in the Blood’. It was released as a Kindle edition in the year 2013. At the beginning of the story, Dunpender Distillery located in East Lothian is described as being indulged in the traditions of making whisky. A special edition of whisky is believed to be prepared for blending as the distillery’s centenary approaches near. When one of the barrels of the special blend edition is opened, a brutally battered human body is discovered. Once again, Detective Constable Scott Cullen is asked to move to the east and solve this deadly crime. He is already caught up in the huge pile of work related to the managerial positioning due to the merger of the Borders ad Lothian into the Police Service of Scotland. Cullen begins his investigation by studying about the ancient history of the well known Crombie family, who were the owners of the Dunpender Distillery. Soon, he comes to know about the disappearances of an employee named Paddy Kavanagh and the son of the owner named Ian Crombie. Both of them were believed to have gone missing during the time of the distillation of the special edition of whisky. As Scott Cullen moves ahead with the investigation, he finds himself stuck between the desire of DI Bain for quickly solving the case, multiple suspects with motives, and the skeletons of the dead in the Distillery’s closets. He tries to hunt a deadly killer who seems to have fire in his blood.
