She was able to become a published author in the year 2006 after the release of her debut novel titled ‘Murder Passes the Buck’. Author Baker was born in the year 1953 in Escabana, Michigan, The United States. Over the year in her writing career, she has become successful in establishing herself as an award winning and bestselling author of mystery novels. The successful Gertie Johnson series written by Baker consists of both mystery and humor, and is set in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. As author Baker belongs to the Upper Peninsula herself, she did not find it difficult to the set the plots of her mystery books in and around her home town. Gretchen shares a business of doll restoration along with her mother. Author Baker says that she is an avid collector of dolls herself. In another mystery series, she has described Gertie Johnson in the lead role. Gertie is depicted as the mother of a local sheriff, who solves murders in old fashioned ways with the help of her friends named Kitty and Cora Mae. The Booklist had termed the Yooper series as an appealing and quirky series. Author Baker has said that she has shared her personal experiences while living in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in her debut novel. Baker is known to create colorful characters and intriguing stories, which have helped her over the years to win the hearts of the readers as well as the critics. The Gertie Johnson series, also called as the Yooper series, written by author Deb Baker is comprised of a total of 3 novels and one novella, which were released between the years 2006 and 2011. The first book in this series is titled as ‘Murder Passes The Buck’. It was released in the year 2006 by the D.B. Publishing. Author Baker has set the central plot of this book in Michigan, the United States, near her hometown. The start of the mystery book shows that Gertie Johnson is a very outspoken person. She does not trust the banks for their working methods and always thinks that they are hiding things from the customers. In spite of being old, she is very quick to draw out the pepper spray whenever she feels any harmful situation. Gertie Johnson does not seem to have lost her marbles. She has a son named Blaze, who works as a sheriff in one of the backwoods communities of the Upper Peninsula. Blaze wants to file a petition to become the legal guardian of Gertie. But, the sassy 66 year old widow thinks that she has some other important works to look forwards to and so will not be able to stay under his guidance. Having a taste to carry out detective work, Gertie tries to solve the murder case Chester Lampi. Chester was believed to have been shot during a deer hunting event. Blaze, who seems more interested in getting retired than carrying out another investigation, thinks that the death of Chester Lampi is nothing more than a hunting accident. Therefore, Gertie Johnson decides to investigate the case on her own. She is supported in her attempt by her friends, pin-curled Kitty and man hungry Cora Mae. All the three aged women go on to interrogate the neighbors, impersonate the FBI, and spy to look for clues related to the case. Gertie appears to be too much stubborn in her attempt and does not seem willing to give up even if the murderer tries to make her his next target.
The next book in the Yooper series written by author Deb Baker was published under the title ‘Murder Grins and Bears It’. It was also released by the D.B. Publication in the year 2007. Author Baker has once again set the plot in Michigan. Gertie Johnson is once again depicted as an unflappable, unstoppable, and unpredictable amateur sleuth. The beginning of this book shows that a game warden gets murdered on the opening day of a bear hunting session in Upper Peninsula. The dead body is discovered under the tree stand of Little Donny. Following the murder, Little Donny goes missing in the backwoods community. This forces Gertie to take the help of her friend Cora Mae and Kitty and investigate the matter on her own. During the course of the investigation, Gertie comes to know that Cora Mae has a crush on a man who she secretly admires. But that does not affect her dedication and determination to solve the case. A new member joins Gertie in the investigation in the form of Grandma Johnson. Gertie’s son, Blaze, who is the local sheriff seems more interested in arresting her for not having license while driving. This disheartens her a little bit as she hopes that he will help her catch the killer of find Little Donny. But, she does not stop at that and moves forward with her investigation.
