Daniel Handler is an American journalist cum writer and he was born on February 28, 1970. Handler is popular for his children series books, his pen name Lemony Snicket gained fame when he published series name ‘All The Wrong Questions’ and ‘A Series Of Unfortunate Events’ under the pseudonym. Daniel is a renowned writer and has published several adult books under his real name, however the his initial book ‘the basic 8’ was rejected by many publishers as it was seen as a representation of dark subject matter.
Early life
Daniel Handler was born in San Francisco and is the son of Louis Handler an accountant and Sandra Handler Day a city college dean in San Francisco. Louis Handler was a Jewish refugee from Germany and he has a distance relationship with Hugh Walpole a British writer through his mother. Daniel has a young sister called Rebecca Handler and he has been voracious since his early childhood, his favorite author was William Keepers Maxwell Jr. Handler attended Commodore Sloat elementary school, Lowell high school, Herbert hoover middle school and he later graduated from Wesleyan University in the year 1992. Daniel Handler is married to Lisa Brown a graphic artist whom they met together in college; they have a child Otto Handler who was born in the year 2003. Currently Handler and the family live in old Victorian house in San Francisco, California. Handler is known to be a politically active writer and he was among the founders of LitPAC. Handler developed interest in poetry and began writing poetry and in the year 1990 he won the poets prize from the academy of American poets. However, as a young poet he divulged and focused all his energies on fiction and novel writing.
In the year June 10, 2007 in the edition of The New York Times Magazine the writer revealed his ambivalence towards expectations and wealth .he indicated that in most cases he is asked for money for different charity for various charity events and he is often willing to help the community. He is known for supporting the Occupy Wall street movement. Daniel describes himself as a secular humanist and he says I am not a believer in predetermined fates, however he believes in the concept that people are rewarded for their efforts and deeds. He does not believe in karma and this is mainly because he believes that he always tries to be a good person to everybody because it is the right thing to do.
Writing style
Four of the major works created by Handler have been published under his name; the first book was ‘Basic Eight’ this was blatantly rejected by over 35 publishers for having a dark tone and dark view of a teenage girl’s life. However, the novel was later published, ‘Watch Your Mouth’ is another book in his library , this is a more operatic theme wise and it is described as an incestra opera mixing modern sexuality and Jewish mythology. A Series of Unfortunate Events
Daniel Handler began writing the novel ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ under his snicket pseudonym in the year 1998. The characters in the book were three orphaned children who experienced adverse events following the death of their parents and the burning of their house by a group of Count Olaf. In this context, the snicket acts as the biographer and narrator of the fictional orphans. He has also narrated three of his book before finding this type of literature and disbursing information tiresome. Handler appeared at the lemony snicket and other media and books including the introduction of Lemony Snicket: the Unauthorized Biography under the name Daniel Handler. The lemony snicket books have gained huge popularity and are among the top sellers in different parts of the world and sold millions of copies across the globe.
Music life
Daniel Handler was involved in two bands during his college years, the bands namely Tzamboni and The Edith Head Trio. However, the bands were not popular and it was not until the launch of 69 Love Songs that the group gained attention from various music critics. The album was set by The Magnetic Fields and in this group Daniel Handler played accordion and he provides a narrative about all the songs in the album. Handler alongside band leader Stephin Merritt provides a conversation about each of the song and he appeared on Strange Powers documentary. He has since gone on playing the accordion in several Merritt projects and music produced by Magnetic Fields and The 6ths.
Television and film
Daniel Handler has had several instances of success in film work; he is known to produce the screenplay for Rick, a play based on Verdi opera Rigolleto and Kill the Poor a play that was based on Joel Rose novel. Handler received credit through writing the screenplay of Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events. Handler submitted a documentary in a digital version alongside other directors such as Brad Silberling. There are numerous instances where the author is sympathetic towards the Baudelaire children and he implies in this context that the children are being held captive by the director of the film rather than allowing them to represent themselves in freewill.
Controversies
During the national book awards of the year 2014, Handler made controversial remarks that author Jacqueline Woodson received an award for people young literature. In this context Woodson, an African American won the award for Brown Girl Dreaming. During the ceremony, he noted that the Woodson is allergic to watermelon, a stereotypic to racist watermelon stereotype. However, he was criticized heavily and he apologized as well as donated ten thousand dollars to We Need Diverse Books. Jacqueline Woodson however, forgave the author indicating that he came from place of ignorance and underscored her mission. However, there was a contribution and Daniel Handler has apologized empathically about the scenario. He is a renowned writer and journalist who strive to make more contribution to the literary world. It is imperative to note that Daniel Handler is an international best seller with one of his book being translated into thirty-seven different languages. Moreover, he has earned numerous accolades for the best screenplays and efficacy in telling stories.
