Children’s fiction writer, Dan Gutman, is an American writer who has written popular book series such as My Weird School Series, The Genius Files, The Homework Machine Series and the Baseball Card Adventures series. The latter’s first book Honus & Me has since been adapted into a TV movie. Apart from his series, he has also penned other great book titles, newspaper and magazine articles, adult non-fiction and screen plays among other written works.

Early Life and Career

Born in New York City on October 19, 1955, Dan Gutman grew up in Newark New Jersey with his sister,Lucy, raised by his single mother from the age of 13 onward after his dad abandoned them. A baseball fan, he attended Rutgers University to pursue a degree in Psychology which he later found out not to be to his liking and instead decided to work on his passion for writing. During the 80’s he wrote essays for the Advance, a Staten Island newspaper and tried his hand at writing magazine articles and screenplays. Though he wanted to write humor, other than having some of his photos published on the Cracked and Crazy, a children’s humor magazine, he went through a trying time where his book ideas were rejected by publishers. However, in 1982, a beacon of light was shone his way and with the Pac-Man video game craze making ripples among players, his unwavering attitude saw him start a video games magazine, Video Games Player, that sold well and was later renamed Computer Games. Meanwhile, he married his wife Nina in 1983 who worked as an illustrator for the his magazine. His love for sports has since seen him evolve into writing sports books and middle grade fiction that have resulted in a number of book series. He now lives with his wife Nina and kids Emma and Sam.

Writing Career and Published Works

In the years following his newspaper essays and the establishment of his Video Games Player magazine, Dan Gutman came up with the genius ideas which probably led to the development of three of his most successful book series yet: the currently 11-book Baseball Card Adventure Series, the more than 30-titles of My Weird School and My Weird School Daze series as well as the Genius Files.Though Dan Gutman did not like writing aout computers much, he had gained a lot of experience with them during his time as Computer Games editor and when it went out of business in 1985, his continued passion for writing saw him write on computers and other topics and this saw his works published in a wide variety of eclectic platforms from Newsweek and Writer’s Digest to Esquire and Psychology Today. During this stint while writing on computers, Dan Gutman also commandeered a newspaper column that featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Miami Herald and other newspapers all the while trying to find the kind of writing that he was really into. And what better way to do that than write about something he loves? He dabbled with sports wring between 1987 and 1992 even writing adult baseball books. He also sold an article explaining all about spitball, corked bats and scuff ball to Discover magazine. After discovering he loved writing about sports more than writing on Computers, Dan Gutman tried his hand at writing children sports books in 1992, though all his books were non-fiction. In 1994 he finally realized his dream of writing creatively and humorously with the success of his first novel, They Came From Centerfield; he had found his niche as a children’s fiction writer.

Honus and Me

The novel that jump started Dan Gutman’s penchant for book series is also one that took quite some time to publish having been rejected by 10 publishers in two years. Having written it in 1994, it was finally published by HarperCollins in 1997. Welll worth the wait, Honus and Me went on to earn nominations for eleven state book awards and was made into a TV movie as well as a play. In addition, it cinched Dan Gutman a firm place as a writer to watch in children’s fiction.

Honus & Me follows the story of a boy, Joe Stoshack, who luckily finds the world’s most valuable baseball card, the 1909 Honus Wagner T-206, while cleaning out an old lady’s attic. Meanwhile, he discovers he can use his card as a time machine since he has the power to travel through time using it. Whenever he holds an old baseball card, he goes back in time to the year when the card was made, in the vicinity of the player featured on the card. And so the master of baseball card time travel successfully goes back to 1909 for an exciting adventure with the legendary Honus Wagner. Will he help Honus win the World Series game? And what secret does he unearth about his neighbour and Honus?

Jackie Robinson

After the successs of Honus & Me, Dan Gutman decided a sequel was in order and in 1999, he published Jackie & Me centered on the great Jackie Robinson, the African American baseball player who overcome the segregation obstacle in baseball. For a class report on an African American with a worthwhile contribution to society, Joe zeros in on Jackie Robinson and decides to go back in time to meet one of history’s greatest baseball player. This trip is however guaranteed to change his views, and temporarily, his skin color. Nevertheless, he finds more than he bargained for as he witnesses true courage from his hero.

His Honus and Me book was made into a TV motion picture, The Winning Season, by Turner Network Television. The picture starred Mathew Modine who played the role of Honus Wagner with Mark Rendall as Joe Stoshack. It was first shown in April 4, 2004. Other than his Joe Stoshack baseball series legacy to his eager readers, Dan Gutman’s humorous look at school adventures with his other books are not only funny, but additionally, captivating and informative page turners.
