Maddie Day is a pen name used by author Edith Maxwell.
Day was born in Pasadena, California, on November 2, 1952. She is most recognized for writing mysteries. Her stories typically take place in the United States.
Maddie grew up in a Los Angeles suburb known as Temple City. She has two older sisters and a younger sibling, a brother. Her mother worked as a real estate appraiser and was also a Girl Scout leader, and her father taught at the local high school.
The author went to Brazil for a year in 1970 as an exchange student. Later she would study linguistics at the University of California Irvine. She graduated in 1974 with her B.A. and would go on to study linguistics some more at Indiana University, graduating with her PhD in 1981.
Maddie worked in a variety of other fields and positions before finally taking the plunge and deciding to write fiction full-time. She has worked as an English teacher to students in Japan, an auto mechanic, led independent childbirth classes, owned a certified organic farm, written freelance articles, and produced software documentation. She has also lived in Burkina Faso and Mali.
The first of her writing to ever be published came when she won a writing contest for kids in 1961. Her work was subsequently published in the Pasadena Star-News. Much later, she would have her first published story come out in 1996 as an adult. Later, her debut novel would come along, which was published in 2012.
On top of being an active writer, Day also is a member of several writing groups from Sisters in Crime to Mystery Writers of America, the Short Mystery Fiction Society, and the Historical Novel Society. She has also served as the president of the Sisters in Crime New England chapter. It was not too long after the release of her first novel that she decided it was time to start being an author on a full-time basis and made the commitment in 2013.
The author first started writing her own cozy mystery stories because she feels that the world is complicated and scary as it is and does not personally want to read anything resembling a thriller because she doesn’t want to feel even worse regarding society than she already does. So she likes to write happy books that are uplifting and feel comfortable and aren’t jarring in any way.
On top of being a world-class writer, Maddie Day also admits to being quite the amateur chef. She loves to cook and when she is not busy working on some writing she can be found in the kitchen working on cooking something delicious. Day also gives back to her readers by often including some recipes along with a book so that they can try them out. Her beau also gets to take advantage of his partner’s love of making food and shares in all the spoils of her culinary passion! They live together in Massachusetts.
Murder on Cape Cod is the first book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries series by Maddie Day. If you want a new cozy little story to enjoy and don’t mind following along with a mystery, then give this debut a try!
Main character Mackenzie Almeida also goes by the nickname Mac. She’s the owner of a bicycle shop in Cape Cop and also belongs to a book club. However, the book club may have to deviate from their normal routine and help the determined bike shop owner track down a clever killer.
Mac’s bike shop does okay, but when the weather starts warming up, the customers really start to come in. Summer is their busiest season. Located in Westham, a cute hamlet by the sea in Massachusetts, Mac is used to getting more locals and tourists coming in once the sun starts coming out. She comes into the shop one day ready for some tourists to come shop at Mac’s Bikes. The last thing that she was expecting was to find a dead body.
The corpse of Jake Lacey, a handyman who had recently been down on his luck, is somehow in her shop. She couldn’t picture anyone having the motive to stab such a nice guy, but there he is, dead as a doornail. Someone clearly did it. Unfortunately, the police suspect Mac as their main suspect since it’s her shop but also because she was seen having an argument with Jake that took place just before he died.
Mackenzie clearly knows that she is not to blame, but no one else does. Strangely, she clocks the weapon as she knows it well– it’s the fishing knife used by her brother, Derrick. That only makes him a strong potential second suspect, though, and Mac knows her brother is not the type of wantonly murder.
Mac’s only familiarity with murder investigations comes from the cozy mystery stories that her book group The Cozy Capers reads. She turns to them to make them investigators in the attempt to clear her name and find the true suspect. She also hits up the library to try and read more about how to do detective work. Can Mac solve the mystery and find Westham’s elusive killer? Read this fun story to find out!
Murder at the Taffy Shop is the second book in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mysteries series by Maddie Day. If you liked the debut in this series, keep all of the action going with this fun sequel!
Mac enjoys using her mind and solving mysteries in the books that she reads. There is always plenty to discuss after finishing a book with the Cozy Capers book group she belongs to.
Gin is friends with Mac and is in a tough spot. Beverly Ruchart was a rich genealogist that was discovered dead outside of the taffy shop Gin runs. Now Gin has been pointed to as a person of interest. Then it’s discovered that Beverly hosted a dinner party and was poisoned that night– the same night Gin brought along a taffy box for guests to enjoy. Now she’s a prime suspect.
Mac knows the candy maker didn’t do it, but who did? The Cozy Capers crew and bike shop owner now have to figure out this mystery. However, they may be in over their heads. Can they solve crime and have a happy ending? Read this book to find out!
