Clifford Spud Johnson is an urban fiction novelist who is best known for the “Gangsta Twist” and the “Kalifornia Luv” series of novels.
The author was born in Detroit, Michigan but spent much of his childhood in Inglewood, California. He is a second-generation Blood and during his teenage years, he was heavily affiliated with the wicked streets.
During the early 1980s, he got caught up in drug dealing and the gang lifestyle and this would make him very aggressive and hungry when it came to money making.
In 1992, he ended up in Oklahoma City selling drugs and soon after met Lesli with whom he had two sons. In 1999, he was arrested by the FBI and sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for distributing 13.5 kilograms of crack cocaine.
During the more than 15 years that he was in prison, writing would turn from a pastime to one of the most impressive collections of urban fiction novels.
His ability to incorporate the lows and highs as well as the consequences of a life of crime in the city, made him relate very well with readers. It has often been said that he not only writes about urban life but that he is urban life.
Growing up, Clifford Spud Johnson was always an avid reader who sometimes read up to two books a week. He got into serious writing to deal with some life-changing events and to pass the time when he was in his twenties.
Many of the stories that he wrote used to get a lot of positive feedback and he realized that he was a gifted writer. Following his incarceration in 2000, he was sent to federal prison, which is where he got serious with writing.
Being in prison, he knew that he had to find something constructive to do so as not to lose his mind. Johnson was determined to make something of himself so that his sons could be proud of him.
All he wanted was to have something more to his name than just another drug dealer/gangbanger. His first move in publishing was to sell two of his novels in 2005 to Teri Woods.
He was very excited that Woods who is an established author was interested in working with him. Two years following that deal, he met “Black Scarface” author Jimmy Da Saint who introduced him to Tru Life Publishing’s Karen Mitchell.
He sent her the manuscript for his debut novel “Kalifornia Luv,” which resulted in the publishing of the work in 2009.
Ten published novels later, Clifford Spud Johnson has come to be known for the passion and energy that he puts into each work.
In addition to his career as a writer, Spud has come to acknowledge that he has more he can offer the world than just his writing. Through his works, he shares his life to inspire others to continue working on their dreams despite their circumstances.
Since he understands that knowledge is power, he is a huge advocate of literacy particularly among black males. Given that most prisoners were unable to read his novels while he was jailed, he is also a huge promoter of literacy within prisons.
For Johnson, recidivism can be significantly reduced if prisoners can read a job application. His works can now be found in most of the large retail stores in the United States such as Books-A-Million, Walmart, Target, and Barnes & Noble.
Clifford Spud Johnson’s “Gangsta Twist 1” is a work in which Impossible meets modern-day Robinhood with an urban and witty twist.
The lead is Taz who leads an elite band of thugs who rule supreme over Oklahoma City. No one has ever met the man in charge as he always gives his orders via his laptop but this has never been a problem for any of his lackeys or him.
Their criminal endeavors mean they have a lot of money that they have bought businesses all over town and even purchased property.
At some point, Taz falls in love with an ambitious young lawyer named Sasha and in the process makes an enemy. Another lawyer at the firm named Cliff is interested in Sacha and is determined to get her back from the thug she has been cavorting with.
He believes the best way to get to the man is through one of his family members which will get him closer to Taz’s inner circle. Taz and Cliff find themselves in a dirty battle that could end in some tragedy.
“Gangsta Twist 2” by Clifford Spud Johnson tells the story of the group that used to be one of the most organized crews in Oklahoma City.
The Network and its affiliates are rolling in money and think nothing of snapping up real estate and business with everyone in the streets paying them respect.
However, their criminal enterprise has been unraveling as betrayal becomes rampant, and member loyalty is not guaranteed.
Now that his crew is coming apart, Taz is dealing with a lot while Cliff is still looking forward to the day he can have his revenge, even as they are both locked in a monstrous fight for Tazneema’s heart.
Meanwhile, one of Taz’s crew members turns up dead and for the crew, the only answer is a gruesome retaliation. However, he will be forced into some difficult decisions when he discovers the identity of the killer.
His once loyal crew begins to question Taz’s leadership. Will he have the wherewithal to remain on top or will he be unable to take the heat?
It is an action-packed tale of revenge, murder, and betrayal that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Clifford Spud Johnson’s “Gangsta Twist 3” asks the question of what would happen to an organized crime organization when one of its weakest links finally comes undone.
Nobody can determine the forest from the trees even as future growth calls for critical changes.
The Network has a reputation for making well-thought-out power moves and now tries to make alliances with new business colleagues. Led by the charismatic Taz, they have many options but not everyone is very adaptable.
Over the years, decisions have been challenged and respect lost.
As secrets come to light lives will be lost and there will be a lot of bloodshed.
