Christopher Nicole is a British Author that has written romance and historical fiction under a surprisingly large number of pseudonyms. The author has been publishing novels since 1957.
+Biography
Christopher Nicole was born in 1930 in Georgetown, Guyana to a police officer by the names of Jack Nicole, and Jean Dorothy. He also grew up in Georgetown. The author, who has Scottish roots, was a student of Queen’s College in Guyana.
The author also spent sometime in Barbados at Harrison College. The first book the author ever wrote was non-fiction and it was about West Indian Cricket. Christopher did not try his hand at producing fiction until 1959 where he wrote a story about his home in the Caribbean.
Writing historical novels came sometime later. The times were tumultuous and Christopher Nicole had to live through the First and Second World War, not to mention the Cold War.
The author’s historical fiction took readers all over the world, to places like Africa and Asia. Some people might be surprised to learn that Christopher Nicole has written romance novels.
It might come as an even bigger surprise for readers to learn that the author has written novels under pseudonyms like Robin Nicholson, Christina Nicholson, Andrew York, and Nicholas Grant.
Christopher Nicole has even experimented with female pseudonyms; and under these varied names, the author has had the opportunity to work with a myriad of publishing houses, this including Mills & Boon, Simon & Schuster, and Jarrolds to mention but a few.
It wasn’t Christopher’s intention to play with so many pseudonyms, at least at the start. In the beginning, after Christopher had become established as an author of historical fiction, he found that he wanted to escape the genre and try a few new things.
Hutchinson, who was Christopher’s publisher, thought that the change would negatively impact the author’s brand. He was encouraged to try his experimentation under a different name. And thus, Andrew York was created, Christopher Nicole’s first ever Pseudonym. Christopher believes that he probably intended for that to be a one time thing.
However, down the line, a number of contractual complications arose, forcing Christopher into a situation where he could only indulge in his craft and his ideas by creating additional pennames.
Christopher found that his variety of pseudonyms availed him so much freedom because they made it possible to work with many publishers at the same time.
Even though the author has delved into so many genres, his first love has and will always be historical fiction. According to Christopher, he only ever strays into other genres when he feels like he needs some sort of break from his creative and writing routine.
Christopher Nicole has been associated with the Canadian Bankers Association and the Royal Bank of Canada as a Fellow and a Clerk in Georgetown and Nassau.
The author married Jean Regina Amelia in 1951. They sired four children: two sons and two daughters. Following their divorce in 1982, Christopher Nicole married Diana Bachmann, who is also a writer.
Christopher and Diana have co-authored books, though Christopher was working under the ‘Max Marlow’ pseudonym at the time.
+Old Glory
Harry McGann was just a young man when he left Ireland. He fled from his home intent on finding a new life on the shores of America. Even though he had his sights firmly set on the unknown lands waiting ahead, the voyage took on a whole new meaning for Harry when he met Elizabeth Bartlett.
But she was too far out his reach.
America introduces to Harry a new world of intrigue and violence. His actions throw him into the thick of the formation of the American Navy, this placing him in the path of untold dangers at sea.
But even through the adventure and turmoil, Harry finds that he is unable to extinguish the memory of Elizabeth.
The first book in the McGann Saga introduces Harry McGann to readers as a man living in a small Irish town and who seems to have everything. Harry’s life couldn’t be more charmed. He comes from a successful family with a flourishing business. And at the age of nineteen, the seaman has more female admirers that he knows what to do with.
This is despite being betrothed to a lovely young woman.
Harry’s life takes an unexpected turn when he comes across Elizabeth Bartlett. Elizabeth is the most beautiful woman he has ever met. However, the big man soon finds himself on the wrong side of the law and runs away to America.
There, Harry encounters adventure and love in this intriguing historical tale.
The book provides interesting insight into the formation of the American Navy. It also sheds light on some of the more noble actions and events the Navy was involved in.
Harry is a fun and enjoyable protagonist. This is despite the fact that he isn’t the most principled character in the book. Larger and stronger that most men, Harry goes through his fair share of tribulations as he tries to find his place in the world.
+The Regiment
Murdoch has just joined the Royal Western Dragoon Guards. He is just one among many Makinders that have served their nation. However, Murdoch’s role as Lieutenant won’t be an easy one to fulfill.
Even as the Boer War approaches, Murdoch finds that his fellow officers might present more of a danger than the foes waiting on the battlefield.
The first book in the Murdoch Mackinder Trilogy is a well-written piece of literature. The book introduces the Royal Western Dragoon Guards, which is a fictional English Cavalry regiment of Christopher Nicole’s creation.
The book was published in the 1980s and it stands the test of time because it perfectly captures the years surrounding the First World War. The book does feel a little bit like a lecture in some places, especially in the way it provides a by-the-numbers account of certain events. However, the narration still proves entertaining because Christopher Nicole throws light on the nature of life in a regiment.
There are also political aspects to consider. Murdoch Mackinder is the hero of the story. Murdoch has lived a life of privilege and that doesn’t change when he joins the regiment.
Some readers might grow irritated with the way every woman that Murdoch meets falls for him.

Quick question is that is allowed. Do I need to read The High Country before I read The Happy Valley?
Many thanks
