Christi Caldwell is New York Times and the USA Today bestselling author of romance and fiction books. Caldwell became a published author in 2013 when Forever Betrothed, Never the Bride, the first book in Scandalous Seasons series was published. Since then she has authored over a dozen novels, in different series, collections, and omnibuses. Christ began writing back in 5th grade, and since then she has held the passion for writing. The author was born and spent her childhood in Southern New England shoreline town and relocated to Concord, North Carolina. She and her husband were high school sweethearts and began dating at the age of 15 years and never broke up not once and graduated together and shortly later they got married.
According to an interview, Christi’s inspiration for writing her debut novel was her son. However, before her son’s birth, she used to write stories about perfect characters, but when her son was born and discovered that he had Down’s syndrome everything ultimately changed. It redefined, Christi’s idea of character perfection and filled her with a desire to write more stories about imperfect protagonists, who deserved to succeed over their struggles and eventually live a happily ever after. Christi Caldwell book Heart of a Duke features twin sisters whom the author claims that she was inspired to write about twins by the fact that the doctors informed her that she was expecting twin daughters. The author has also found inspiration for writing books from other authors such as Julia Quinn for whom she admits has a unique voice and her novels tell narrate brilliant stories from amazing characters.
Before writing, Christi worked as a high school history teacher and quit her job to begin full-time authorship and motherhood.
For the Love of the Duke
For the Love of the Duke is debut novel in The Heart of a Duke series by bestselling author Christi Caldwell. The main character in the story is Jasper an acutely haunted man. Even though young and widowed, he is not being “hunted” by any marriage-minded lady. He confides himself in a self-imposed prison to grieve the loss of his wife and child. He is gruff, rude and sometimes nasty.
Christi develops her main character well, and soon you realize that this is not a shield or brave. There is no shine in a man who lived his life differently; he has one friend who visits him frequently. As a Duke, the widowed Jasper has the power to keep the entire world away from himself and lead a miserable life as he wishes.
Then there is Katherine, and like Jasper, she is sophisticated but well developed. She critically understands how financial ruin feels like, having lived most of her childhood years with her well for nothing father. Aldora, Katherine’s sister marriage has dramatically saved their family reputation and finances to this point. Katherine and her sister Anne are on the marriage mart. Their mother has good plans for Anne but is decided that Katherine should marry a distant relative who is next in the line of the title. However, Katherine can never abide by the repulsive man and is agitated by the scheming of her mom and greatly hurt by the fact that she means so little to her.
When Katherine and her twin sister Anne slip away to the Frost Festival, they are on a mission in search of a necklace that is rumored to bring luck in finding the right Duke to marry. However, an accident that occurs during their adventurous mission makes Katherine and Jasper cross paths. Immediately, Katherine resurfaces Jasper’s memories of his wife- and a healthy burning desire starts between the two.
The first book in The Heart of a Duke series is a brilliant read. Lady Katherine’s fear of water can be traced back to a young child when she almost drowned. Even when her sister Anne drags her to the Frost Air festival, she is at first hesitant, but she is convinced that the ice is safe. On the other hand, Jasper, the grieving Duke of Bainbridge allows his best friend also to persuade him to attend the Frost Air festival, but the last thing that he ever wants is to find himself falling in love again especially after the death of his wife and child.
When Katherine later ask the Duke to marry her off to avoid her arranged marriage to her cousin, Jasper agrees to the deal but on one condition- it should be a marriage of convenience. However, with evidence of strong burning desire between them and the solid wall Jasper has built in his heart, can Lady Katherine find a way to break these barriers or will Jasper remain caught up in his past scared to drop his guard?
For Love of the Duke is a fast-paced, well-written novel set in the Regency England, in the glittering world of duchess, dukes, ladies, and lords. The plot is easy, flowing smoothly with quite unforgettable characters.
Forever Betrothed, Never Married
This is the debut novel in Scandalous Seasons series by Christi Caldwell. It is a story of Lady Emmaline and Drake who were betrothed by their parents as little children with Emmaline being younger than him. As the two grew up, Drake became resentful of his forced engagement and in efforts to prove to the world about his independence; he joined the military and went to fight a Napoleonic war, came back a changed man. He suffered from what many today would call PTSD, such that he almost believed that he was going mad and sets his sight no higher than gambling, women and excessive drinking.
Emmaline while she believed that Drake would come back from war and start over again, leading to a proposal and marriage, nothing of that sort ever happens. When she discovers that her man has no intentions of marrying her, she decides that enough be enough. However, when Drakes friend Sinclair comes with a list of the event that her man would be attending, she chooses to put herself everywhere at least to win Drake’s attention and hopefully make him fall in love with her.
Will Emmaline efforts bear fruits and draw out her man from the hole he is confiding in? Christi Caldwell has woven a lovely story with lots of light-hearted moments, emotional moments, sadder ones and happy ones too.
