The Legacy is the first book in the Children’s House series by Yrsa Sigurdardottir. This is the first book in a new series from the award-winning author. If you’re interested in reading something new, check this book out! It’s the first in a series that focuses on the main characters of Freyja, a psychologist, and Huldar, a police officer.

A mother is struck down in cold blood, and the only person that might have any clues or answers to the case is a young girl. The case is baffling, but the victim had a daughter who was hiding in the same room that her mother died in. The only thing is that the seven-year-old girl is not talking about the incident whatsoever.

Detective Huldar may have been newly promoted, but he also feels like he is out of his depth when it comes to this case. Knowing that he is going to need some help, he turns to outside people and resources to get a little further in the case. The first person that comes to mind to help is Freyja. He thinks that the psychologist will be pretty helpful because of her experience and her professional expertise working with younger people that have been traumatized.

Freyja comes on board, but reluctantly. She doesn’t have a huge history of trusting the police and working with them doesn’t exactly make her happy. She doesn’t trust Huldar either in particular but has a deep dedication to her profession and helping younger children. She wants to do whatever it takes to protect the young girl and to keep her safe.

Freyja wants to make sure that Margret is protected, but this may end up proving difficult. The killer is also still out there, so they have to contend with the fact that the murderer of the young girl’s mother is still out there and free– and might strike again. The killer is also aware of their hunt for them because they continue to leave odd clues for them.

The clues are confusing, but Freyja and Huldar are doing their best to try and crack the code and figure out what the cryptic messages mean. Could the very fact that they are receiving these messages mean that they will be the ones that are next? Does the killer have them in his sights? Anything is possible in this engaging thriller. Read it for yourself to find out what happens!

The Reckoning is the second book in the Children’s House series by Yrsa Sigurdardottir. This is the follow-up story to The Legacy, which started this series off.

The story starts with the character of Vaka. She’s a young girl who’s sitting on the steps at her new school and at the time is regretting the coat that she has chosen. It appears that her father just has forgotten about picking her up from school. On top of that, her mother didn’t give her the pocket money she usually gets for the week, and she can’t wait inside because the school’s locked up for the day. Vaka can’t help but think to herself that adults are useless.

Vaka would love for someone to pick her up, but that doesn’t seem to be happening. She doesn’t have any way to call home, so she figures she’ll sit on the steps until it appears her father remembers to pick her up. A girl comes up to her, from her class. Vaka recognizes her as the girl who has two fingers on her hand missing.

It turns out that she lives behind the school, located behind a high fence. Vaka asks if she can call her parents from the girl’s house. That is the last that anyone sees Vaka. That’s when Detective Huldar gets called in, along with child psychologist Freyja. They soon realize they’re at the center of another shocking case.

Can they track down the girl and find out what’s happened to her? Or is it too late? Read this compelling suspense thriller to find out!
