Cheryl Brooks is an American Author that writes erotic romance novels. Brooks has garnered a reputation for her ability to package Science fiction and fantasy in a manner that appeals to romance enthusiasts that do not care for those genres.

Cheryl Brooks comes from Louisville, KY. Her career in nursing began in earnest when she attended and eventually graduated from the Kentucky Baptist Hospital School. That was in 1976, and Brooks topped that achievement a decade later by joining Indiana University and earning a BSN.

In a way, the author’s life has molded the stories she has written over the years, even those science fiction tales of hers which boggle the mind. Just consider all the sexy cowboys Brooks keeps creating and then take into account the fact that the author has loved horses for as long as she can remember.

She had the pleasure of moving to rural Indiana with her family in 1989 which only served to cement her love for the majestic creatures. Of course, Cheryl Brooks will tell you that she loves all creatures.

She shares her home with many cats and dogs, this on top of her horses and her husband, a wonderful man with whom she has two sons.

Even though Cheryl Brooks has such an extensive bibliography, publishing success wasn’t a guarantee for her. Brooks did not attend nursing school merely as a formality.

She actually cared about the field and she spent the next three decades working as a nurse. Brooks will be the first to tell you that she found all the satisfaction she could ever hope for in her work.

For the longest time, writing was merely the hobby that Brooks pursued alongside her day job. In fact, there was a time when the author wrote stories merely as a means of entertaining her friends.

But a time came when she began to see a future in the written word. She put her belief to the test when she wrote and self-published a book in 2006 under the ‘Samantha R. Michaels’ pen name.

The ‘Cat Star Chronicles’ came into the picture two years later, with ‘Sourcebooks Casablanca’ publishing ‘Slave’, the first novel in the series, paving the way for the author to pen a dozen sequels.

Cheryl Brook’s publishing career has been a fruitful one. Her achievements include winning the Prism Award in 2015. Brooks has a few self-published titles to her name but it is through her traditionally published works that she has experienced the most success.

Even though Brooks’ novels feature a lot of imaginary concepts ranging from alien worlds to special magical feline abilities, she actually does research for her novels.

Even when her stories take very wild twists and turns, Brooks normally has a few realistic aspects that help her ground her books. Her imagination cannot fake those elements and that is where the research comes into play.

An example is the one book which Brooks chose to set in India. She began studying Indian culture and languages. She also bought saris and learned to cook Indian food just so she could reproduce the country’s aesthetic in her novels.

The author is both a plotter and a pantser. She does a lot of plotting before she sits down to write her novels. But all that plotting happens in her head. She never actually jots her ideas down, and most times she doesn’t even have the option of doing so.

Great ideas will find Brooks in the most inconvenient places, such as when she is driving and couldn’t possibly get her hands on pen and paper. On occasion, the author will make an effort to outline the major plot points of some of her novels.

But she only documents vague ideas and leaves plenty of opportunity for the story and the characters to change down the line. Brooks has tried careful plotting beforehand. There are times when she has produced detailed synopses from which she has then crafted her novels.

But those stories often feel stilted to the author, mostly because they lack the twists and turns that liter those novels which Cheryl Brooks writes without prior planning. That being said, the author’s preparatory process is quite extensive.

This is especially true for series. In order to produce a sequel in a series, Brooks has to re-read some of her previous books to get a better sense of the characters and plot threads.

She also has a few tools which she uses to keep track of her characters, their personalities, biographies, and timelines.

When Brooks isn’t reading or writing, she can be found cooking, singing, and gardening. The author also plays the guitar.
