Authors Neil Richards and Matthew Costello pen the “Cherringham” series of cozy mystery novels. The series began publication in the year 2013, when “Murder on Thames” was released. The series is set in a village in England called Cherringham.
The series stars Jack and Sarah, who make for an unlikely detective duo. Sarah is an English web designer, and Jack is an American ex-cop. Sarah moved back to the village so that she can find herself. Jack retired from the police force and is looking for the simple life in a small English village.
“Murder on Thames” is the first novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2013. Cherringham, a quiet little town in the Cotswolds. Not much happens there, or it would appear. Then a woman is found in the river. According to the police, it was a terrible accident. Is this true? Sarah believes there has to be more to it.
In Jack, an ex-homicide detective with the NYPD, she finds a partner who is willing to begin investigating along with her. They quickly find out that things are not as crystal clear as the cops would like them to be. This first, of quite a few cases brings together Jack and Sarah in an unlikely partnership.
This is tons of fun to read, with a simple story line to follow. Sarah and Jack are an excellent pairing, as they have some enjoyable interactions. The mystery is intriguing and well drawn and you just want to know who the killer is.
“Mystery at the Manor” is the second novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2014. Victor Hamblyn, the elderly owner of Mogdon Manor, dies during a mysterious fire. Was it truly an accident, though? Sarah and Jack are both skeptical. The victim’s three middle-aged kids (all of whom live in Cherringham) are all possible heirs. Not to mention possible killers. Could one of them have set the fire?
This is another short and fun mystery. It is great to see Jack and Sarah working together to solve another mystery, they are simply great characters. By the end, you want to know more about Jack and Sarah, and want to read about them solving more crimes.
“Murder by Moonlight” is the third novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2014. There are just two weeks to go before the Cherringham Charity Christmas Concert. Choir rehearsals have been in full swing. Then the worst possible thing happens. Kirsty Kimball, a member of the choir, is found dead after a severe allergic reaction to a homemade rehearsal cake.
Jack is asked to help bolster the short handed choir. Quickly, he becomes convinced that her death was not an accident. Sarah agrees, and the pair are immersed into the rivalries, jealousies, and passions of Cherringham’s Rotary Club choir.
These books somehow get better with each installment. The characters even become more likable with each and every story. Some cannot wait to get their hands onto more of these superb reads. These books are great to read quickly, and allow for a complete reading experience without them taking long to finish.
“Thick as Thieves” is the fourth novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2014. A pair of Cherringham locals walk around a farm with their metal detectors and find something fantastic. It is a silver Roman plate that is worth millions. They have to share the reward with the owner of the land and the farmer, Lady Repton. There will still be plenty for everyone, though.
That night, while the pubs in the village do some big business, Professor Peregrine Cartwright (an archaeologist) offers to store the plate in his huge wall safe. When the British Museum expert turns up to authenticate the plate, the safe is found to be empty. Police put the blame on a notorious gang of art thieves that operates in the county. Sarah and Jack, however, have other suspicions about what happened.
With each book the authors deliver something better than the one before it. These books feature the right combination of character and mystery. The books are compelling, and hold your attention right until the very end.
“Last Train to London” is the fifth novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2014. Cherringham is shocked. Otto Brendl died suddenly of a heart attack. He was the likable old guy who hosted the classic Punch-and-Judy show for all the kids during the summer.
While the memorial service is planned, Jack starts to become suspicious about Otto was not only the friendly guy next door. There might be more behind the heart attack? Pretty quickly, Sarah and Jack are on a sinister killer’s trail and both of them are going to find that there is more than just one form of justice.
Right from the start, readers found that they were invested, something that never lets up for the entire story. Readers enjoyed this one, and it even showed a different side to Jack.
“The Curse of Mabb’s Farm” is the sixth novel in the “Cherringham” series, which was released in the year 2014. On a hill above Cherringham is Mabb’s Farm. It is a place that has a dark history that goes back to the seventeenth century, when the locals feared the devil, and witches were burnt at the stake.
Legend has it that both the farm and anyone who lives there are cursed with misfortune. Is it only a curse when the livestock get sick, the year’s crops fail, and there is an outbreak of deadly fires? Could there be some hidden reason behind these dangerous events? Neither Jack nor Sarah believe in the supernatural, and quickly they find some human suspects.
Readers found this to be an excellent read, complete with a twist they didn’t even see coming. The book has some great characters and an interesting plot to it. Some hope these books continue for much longer, as with each one, you learn more and more about Jack and Sarah.

Best books out fantastic read as so compelling I hate putting it down
I have been reading these mysteries since the very first came out for $.99 and monthly. I have been hooked ever since and wait anxiously, when I finish, one for the next to come out. I love the interaction with Jack and Sarah, they read each other as if they were married. I used to buy them on my Nook, but been having trouble with that so now get them on Kinle app. The mysteries keep you hook and now I also read the ‘Mydworth Series”, just as captivating.
I was heartbroken to finish the last book. Please write more. I’ll keep hoping to see it on amazon.ca
I agree Shirley I love this series have all of them please write some more!
I would love to see more of these delightful books being published. I have so enjoyed all of the Cherringham mysteries. The characters are amazing, and I love Neil Dudgeon reading the books. The plots keep you guessing till the end and I feel like I’ve lost a friend now that I’ve finished them all. Please keep them coming.
