Dubious
Dubious is the debut in the Loan Shark Duet series. Valentina survived living in the worst part of the town, where she was taking care of her big brother, who got an intellectual disability after an accident. She has been struggling a lot since the death of her parents.

She is trying to give herself a future by training to be a vet, but with the bit of money she gets, she has a lot of debts and college bills to pay. As the novel opens, she arrives home one day from work and finds Charlie missing. She finds him at her neighbor’s home, who she left to watch over him.

Jerry is her neighbor and a car thief who has a gambling addiction. She soon realizes that Charlie is not only gambling but owes four hundred thousand rands to a loan shark.

More trouble is that he owed 400,000 rands to a notorious loan shark in the town, and she didn’t have that amount of money, and there was nothing she could do to get it. No, where she could run to that, she couldn’t be found, so she opted to stay.

Gabriel, the loan shark, came over to get the money, and since he knew they wouldn’t have it, he had a plan of killing Val and her brother. He has orders to kill them to set an example while showing that it’s a bad idea to mess with the Louw family, but Gabriel offers Val a different deal.

Gabriel comes up with the idea that Val will be his for nine years as she works off to pay her brother’s debt. Gabriel’s mother Magda is mad and wants them dead, but Val becomes the property of the Louw family, where she’s to clean the huge mansion by herself.

Magda pushes her so hard and wants her to fail so that she can kill her, while Gabriel is so obsessed with her and needs her to stay alive. However, his mother is cruel and powerful and always gets him to do what she wants. Valentina doesn’t know that Gabriel wants her to be his and has no plans of letting her go at the end of the nine-year contract.

The more Gabriel gets to know Val, the more her past confuses him, making him start his investigations as he realizes that not everyone carries her scars from the outside. He gradually seduces her with his skills and charisma, and valentine has no choice but to get used to his mother, Magda, who seems unhappy with his son’s decision and is looking for any excuse to kill her.

She gives her cruel tasks so that she can fail, but luckily valentine is strong enough to have them done in time. On the other hand, Gabriel trains her to desire his body, showing her what it’s capable of. She struggles with her attraction to him, and as Gabriel gains more feelings for Valentina, he plans to keep her safe from his mother’s cruelty.

Valentina is unbelievably strong, and it’s so admirable how he loves and cares for his brother, Charlie. She endures so much and fights to come to the end of it. The novel is well written with great and developed characters to make an exciting storyline.
Charmaine shows some glimpse into the brutality of these men and then later gives their humane side. The novel is set in Johannesburg, where there is a lot of poverty and people pay off their debts to stay alive.
Beauty in the Broken
The novel is set in South Africa in the powerful world of Diamond mining. Dalton Clarke set Damien up six years ago, which led him to be sent to prison for stealing his diamond. He’s now a badass with much criminal connection, and he is ready to start his vengeance mission.

He is a changed man, only that he desires to do a few things: his enemy’s mentally challenged daughter -Lina. She is worth billions and is one of the wealthiest widows in the country. However, she isn’t allowed to touch any of her riches since her father manages everything. He holds all the signing power, and Damien knows that that will be his job after they get married.

He wants revenge on anyone who took part in his incarceration and then marries Angelina Dalton as a top-up. Damien has been obsessed with Lina from the day he met her at her father’s dinner party. The same night led to his downfall enabled by Lina’s father, a very dangerous man. The first thing he wants is to marry her by force.

Lina is a strong and enduring character who has been through hell, and life kept taking her down. She is frequently abused both physically and emotionally but takes all the shit on the chin and keeps moving.

After the cruel death of her husband, Lina was declared mentally challenged and put in a mental asylum due to her self-harming habits and later went home to her father. She has no say or choice in any aspect of her life, so she doesn’t have anything to say when Damien pressures her father to agree to get married to him.

As Damien gets to know Lina more, he learns about her inner secrets and pain and what he thought was far from the truth. Damien is torn between his growing feelings and his need to punish Lina due to his father’s doings.

After reading her medical files, he’s shocked since she doesn’t fit the description of her condition. Can he find out who Lina is and what happened to her? Can she learn to trust him enough to tell him what happened?

The author writes the story with extraordinary passion, both in dark and light, using scenes that will leave the reader gasping and emotionally linked to the story. Beauty in the Broken is a beautifully twisted dark romance novel with amazing characters.
