Charles Stross is one of the most successful authors from England, The United Kingdom, who likes to write his books based on the science fiction, crime, horror, and thriller genres. He was born in Leeds, England, but currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. As many as 6 books written by author Stross have been nominated for the Hugo Award. He has even three Hugo awards in his writing career in the years 2005, 2010, and 2015 respectively, in the category of the best novella. Most of the written work of author Stross has been translated into as many as 12 foreign languages. Before going on to work as a full time writer, author Stross used to work in a variety of jobs as a programmer, tech writer, pharmacist, and journalists. He has earned graduation degrees in Computer Science and Pharmacy. Some of his works have been praised by a number of prominent personalities because of his excellent style of writing and unique description. One such written work of author Stross was praised by the Nobel Prize winning economist named Paul Krugman.
Author Stross was born on18 October 1954 as Charles David George Stross in Leeds, England. He went on to become an award winning writer and specializes in writing Lovecraftian, fantasy, horror, space opera, and hard science fiction novels. Between the years 1994 and 2004, he used to work as an active writer for the Computer Shopper magazine. He was mainly responsible for writing the monthly column of Linux. When he felt that he has to devote more time towards writing his own novels, he stopped writing for the previous magazine. However, even after becoming a full time writer, Stross finds some time to publish some freelance work on the internet which he writes in his free time. At a very young age, author Stross showed interest in reading and writing. When he was about 12 years of age, he wrote his first science fiction story. Later in the year 1986, author Stross graduated with a Pharmacy degree and after a period of one year, he became a qualified pharmacist. In the year 1989, he enrolled himself at the Bradford University for obtaining a post graduate degree in Computer Science. Stross began working as a technical author and then as a programmer.
A year later, when he realized that he was getting enough success as a fiction writer, he stopped technical writing and began working as a full time fiction writer. During the 1970s and 1980s, author Stross had published several articles about role playing games. These articles used to get published in the White Dwarf magazine. The first short story written by author Stross was published as ‘The Boys’. It appeared in the Interzone magazine in the year 1987. Later, he wrote his first novel titled ‘Singularity Sky’, which was released by the Ace Books in the year 2003. The novel went on to become very much successful and was also nominated for the Hugo Award. In between, he used to write and publish several short story collections. Several of his short stories have been nominated for he Nebula Award, Hugo Award, and a few other prestigious awards. The first novel written by him, which went on to win the Hugo Award was titled ‘The Concrete Jungle’. The success of author Stross as one of the prominent authors of the science fiction, crime, fantasy, and a variety of other genres enabled him to receive a lot of praises and appreciations from all over the world. On one prestigious occasion, Stross was invited as the Guest of Honor at the Orbital, which was the National Science Fiction convention of Britain, in the year 2008. At the Maryland Regional Science Fiction Convention held at Balticon in the year 2009, author Stross was once again invited as an honorable guest. During the same year, he was again called as the Author Guest of Honor at the Fantasticon convention held in Denmark. The list of the prestigious and prominent awards won by author Stross because of the success of his books and short stories includes the Locus Award, Hugo Award, etc. He has even received a few nominations of other popular awards such as the John W Campbell Memorial Award, Seiun Award, Arthur C Clarke Award, etc.
The Laundry Files series written by author Charles Stross is one of his most successful novel series. It consists of a total of 7 novels and 4 novellas, which were published between the years 2004 and 2016. The initial novel of this series was titled as ‘The Attrocity Archives’ and was released by the Ace Publishers in the year 2004. This novel’s story is set in London, England, The United Kingdom, and features the main characters as Dominique O’Brien and Bob Howard. At the beginning of the novel, it is shown that Bob Howard works as a low level technician for a super secret government agency called as The Laundry. All his colleagues seem to be busy in helping to save the world, while Bob is made to sit on his desk and restore some lost data. Being a techie, he does not have the risk of getting shot while on duty, like his other colleagues. But still, most of them do not receive any thanks for their brave works. Bob’s world was very much safe and dull, as he was ordered to keep it that way. However, goes on to get noticed, after which his world turns upside down. Within no time, he gets engaged in alternative universes, Middle Eastern terrorists, spycraft, nazis, and a number of other risky matters. He understands that it will take more dedicated efforts from him to clear all the mess and save his life.
The initial novel of The Laundry Files series was followed by the second installment called as ‘The Jennifer Morgue’. This novel was published by the Golden Gryphon Press in the year 2006. This book’s story continues to depict the same characters from the first novel, that is, Bob Howard and Dominique O’Brien. Along with them, a few other characters are also introduced in this book such as Ellis Billington and Ramona Random. At the start of this book, Bob Howard is shown as continuing to work for the secret United Kingdom agency called The Laundry, and tries to fight against the evil forces. He narrates an incident in which he boards the yacht of Ellis Billington for obtaining the Gravedust device, which helps in talking with the dead people. Bob learns about the plans of Ellis about raising the deep sea monster called Jennifer Morgue and ruling the world. In order to counter the evil intentions of Ellis Billington, the United States Chamber sends Ramona Random, who seems to a lethal weapon against the enemies. Seeing that Ramona Random always remains in conflict with all her bosses, the United States Chamber decides to send Bob Howard along with her so that he can control her and help to stop the evil plans of Ellis Billington.
