Odd Duck
Odd Duck is a children’s book that stars Theodora, an as perfect duck they come. Theodora can comfortably swim with a cup placed on her head. She is able to stay in the north while the other ducks go south in winter without breaking a sweat. On the other side is Chad, a bird who is strange in every sense in the word. While Theodora has a soft spot for Chad, it is hard for her to overlook his peculiar habits. What kind of duck colors his feathers and what is with the junk Chad has piled in his backyard? Just who between these two is peculiar?
Theodora has a strict routine. Every day she steps out of her constellation-canopy bed, Theodora starts her day with sit-ups followed by wingspan exercises. She then does some quacking exercises before going swimming. Aside from the routine, Theodora has her idea of what a good duck is supposed to do. First, she has to buy real duck pellets like other ducks. She also has to purchase duck burlap before going to the library to read A history of Good Ducks. Other books she checks out in the library include Duck Romance, Duck Mysteries, and Duck Space Stories.
After a busy day, Theodora retreats to her bed. Every night, she looks up to the stars to make one wish; nothing in her life will ever change. The funny thing is that Theodora is the only one who seems to live such a perfect life when compared to other ducks. Well, things go well until Chad shows up. Chad has a junk in his backyard that he refers to as art. He is also in the habit of listening to awful screeching music. As if this is not bad enough, Chad’s feathers stick out from different angles, and they come in different strange colors.
Like any good duck, Theodora bakes a cake and takes it to Chad’s as a welcome gift. At first, Theodora is sure that she and Chad would never be friends. This changes when the bond over their love for the sky at night. Over time, Chad and Theodora realize that they have a lot in common. The funny thing is that when they overhear others talk about the odd duck, they both think that this does not describe them. Theodora thinks that Chad is odd while he thinks the same about her.
