When it comes to quality women writers, there are quite a few names which come to our mind. Caroline Dunford is one such name which comes to our mind. She is a person of various skills and capabilities. It would be pertinent to mention here that before settling down for full time writing, she handled many different types of jobs. She has worked as a psychotherapist, development office, journalist and perhaps a few other professions too. Ultimately it was her writing skills which she got attracted to. As of today she is a famous and well known short story writer, playwright, tutor and mentor. Hence there is hardly any doubt that she is multi-talented and multifaceted personality and has won the admiration and respect of scores of her fans and admirers. She has written a number of books covering various genres. The books are well known for their lucid and fast paced style of writing. They are extremely gripping and hence readers often find her novels extremely interesting and prefer to read them in one go. She is particularly famous for writing novels revolving around murder mysteries and this is what sets her apart from others in the field of novel writing.
She Likes People
It would be pertinent to mention here that Dunford has always had a fascination for people. This perhaps motivated her to complete a degree on psychology. This also led her to complete a full-fledged training on psychotherapy. She is a firm believer that the entire human race could make sense by being interested and fascinated in people. Even if such feeling and thought process is inside the head of us, it could still make a big difference. It would also not be out of place to mention here that many of her books have become successful because it has been centered round the people and their behaviors. It also would be pertinent to mention here that the entire series of My Euphemia Martins Mysteries revolved around her maternal great grandmother. She sacrificed a life of luxury to get into service of human beings and this had a profound impact on the life and achievements of Dunford.
She also is a person who is interested and inspired by everything which she does. In a chaotic world she believes that telling stories could be something which could help bring in a sense of resemblance and order. All her stories not only revolve around themes but also put forth quite a few probing questions. In fact her play Burke which has gone into third production tries to find answers to the question as to how Hare and Burke are the most successful serial killers. It tries to pose questions as to how they have been able to do what they did so successfully over the years. Similar questions will also be found in her Euphemia series. She tries to find out answers to question as to why people do all those unpleasant things and what the guiding factors are which goads or motivates them. She says that if one wants to know about the darker side of human beings, you must also try and respect their lighter side. You must look at the generous works which may people have done. Humor is also something which she believes is a useful armory and with love it could be a winning combination.
She has written nine books under the Euphemia series. It may not be possible to review each one of them. However, we will try and look at a couple of her books under the above series. It certainly will go a long way in helping to understand her style of writing and find out some clear reasons why she is a cut above the rest. It certainly will help writers to have a better insight about the way in which she handles plots and the techniques she uses to open the minds of people and find out as to what they are doing.
A Death In The Family
This is the first book in the Euphemia Martins murder mystery series penned by Caroline Dunford. The story is build around Rev Joshia Martins who dies suddenly while enjoying his dish of onions and muttons. Her sudden death leaves his family virtually on the edge and they are almost certainly facing destitution. Joshia daughter is the eighteen year old Euphemia is courageous to face life and is keen on providing relief and succor to her mother and little brother. She is intelligent, young, fit though a bit naïve. She takes on herself the role of a maid and believes that it will not be too demanding.
However, things have been scripted differently for her as the first day of her job in the home of Lord Stapleford leads her to discover a murdered body. Her instinct leads her to some political, social and business secrets of the masters for whom she is working. When she becomes aware of the dark secrets she is locked in cupboards, propositioned, and made to work hard in her master’s house. Her reputation is also torn apart and she is accused of murder and also threatened with her life. However, Euphemia is not the one to take things lying down and she uses her wit, humor and intelligence and perhaps even her scream as she continues her travesty with justice.
A Death in the Wedding Party
This is the fourth in the Euphemia Series and is written against the backdrop of the year 2011. It is the time when there is love in the air. This book also revolves round the estranged daughter of and Earl. She is a maid in the house of an MP by the name Lord Stapleford. She has now risen to the rank of housekeeper. Though she works for him, she is keen on exposing the dark deeds of her master who is a corrupt politician. She is taken aback when a member of a wedding party is found murdered. Hence the onus falls on Euphemia to find out ways and means by which she can solve the murder mystery. Her only tools are her virtue, wit & humor and her readiness to scream whenever she is pushed into a corner. Will this be able to help her to identify the murderer or will she be in a dangerous situation herself.
Conclusion
There is one thing great about Dunford. Her representation and definition of various characters and situations are simply amazing and she ensures that the readers have no other option but to finish the books in one reading.
