Storm
Storm is the first book in the Elemental series. The book follows a prequel budded Elemental that introduces the main characters and sets the pace for the Elemental series. The Storm book features Becca Chandler, a girl at the center of a scandalous rumor. Becca’s ex-boyfriend spread nasty lies about her. Thanks to these lies, Becca is attracting all the wrong guys. This is not the worst that Becca has been through. Her father abandoned Becca and her mum when she was much younger, and for some reason, people always picked on her. Despite all these challenges, Becca grows to become a decent young woman.
In a funny twist of fate, Becca saves Chris Merrick at the school parking lot, and from that point, their worlds get intertwined. Chris is not only an average teenager but he is an Elemental, which means that he comes with an extraordinary power that enables him to control water. His brothers can control the wind, fire, and earth. Together, these brothers are very powerful, and this makes them be marked for death by other elementals. Despite their abilities, the Merrick brothers are determined to stay away from trouble.
Chris and Becca are fond of each other, and they save each other multiple times. All is well for this duo Hunter, the latest addition in the school takes Chris’s place in Becca’s life. Becca isn’t sure which of the two guys is perfect for her. It does not help that one among the two is not being honest. To make matters worse, Becca’s father reappears, and he is determined to be part of his daughter’s life again.
The story mainly narrates about Chris, the youngest of the Merrick brothers and partially about the lives of the rest of his brothers. Michael, the eldest of the brothers, has sacrificed a lot since the death of their parents in a tragic accident. Michael forgoes college and stays home to take care of his brothers. Even though he is overprotective at times, he is the perfect elder brother that anyone can have.
This is a refreshing paranormal story that features an exciting cast, a thick plot, and action-packed scenes to boot. The story is beautifully written with wit and interesting characters making the book a page-turner. It’s also full of constant twists and turns proving to be a fantastic debut novel that lives to its cover. Becca and the Merrick brothers are interesting and lovable characters. There is a lot going on in the story and there is a lot of suspense in it. You will find the right amount of action, romance, and suspense which makes for a great start to a promising series.
A Curse so Dark and Lonely
A Curse so Dark and Lonely, the debut novel in Cursebreakers series features Prince Rhen, the heir of Emberfall. The teenage boy was cursed to repeat the autumn until he could love another person. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned and Prince turns into a beast that destroys everything in its wake. Within a short time, he destroys the castle as well as his family.
Just before he turns 18, Rhen hopes the curse will be easily be lifted when a girl falls for him. He is aware that this is the last chance he has; otherwise, he will remain a beast for the rest of his life. While Grey goes out to bring Rhen a girl to break the curse, Harper, a young girl with a difficult life and a heart of gold, accidentally becomes part of the story.
Harper’s life has never been easy. For one, she has cerebral palsy, and this made her brother always underestimate her. Harper’s father was long gone leaving a mountain of debt in his wake, and as if things couldn’t get worse, Harper’s mother was dying. Harper learned to be strong to survive in a world that kept throwing curveballs in her direction. When Harper attempts to save a stranger in the streets, she is pulled into the world of magic.
The world of magic throws Harper off-guard and as she learns more about Rhen, she begins to understand how much is at stake. Harper wants to back to go her world and help her mother, but Rhen and Grey will hear none of it. As the two teenagers interact, Rhen discovers that Harper is not your average girl. She has a lot to offer, and Rhen knows that he would be lucky to have such a woman by his side. Unfortunately, potent forces stand against Emberfall and the broken curse will not be enough to save the kingdom.
A Curse so Dark and Lonely is a love story in every sense of the word, and the fantastic thing is that it goes beyond romantic love. The story also touches on self-love, love for family, and love for the country. The book is set on the fascinating parallel world of Emberfall, which makes the story even more enjoyable. Harper is a perfect protagonist, and while she was not born a princess, she acted like one. Rhen is also a wonderful prince. It is easy to pity him given the fact that aside from Grey, he had no one else. Rhen had lost his family, and for years, he had not found anyone who could love him back.
If you are looking for a fairytale retell like no other, A Curse so Dark and Lonely is a wonderful choice. This is a well-thought-out read with interesting characters and a simple plot. The heroine is fierce, the pace just right, and the ending will send you in search of the sequel.
