The Brides of Karadok series is a set of historical romance novels by Alice Coldbreath. The latter is an author of historical romance and paranormal romance fiction who is best known for the Brides of Karadok series. Her works are for the most part set in the Victorian and medieval eras and are usually set in Karadok, a fictional kingdom in Europe during the Middle Ages. The series features mismatched couples and arranged marriages of men and women from the elite of their society. As for her Victorian novels, they are for the most part about the middle and working classes as opposed to the nobility. Alice has said that the inspiration for her work usually comes from the books she loved and still loves to read. She always loved to read books with relatable rather than temperamental beauties from the Victorian and Medieval eras, growing up in the nineties and eighties. It also helps that she grew up in a tiny English village and often dreams of hunky futuristic androids, werewolf clans and medieval warlords. When she is not writing novels, she can be found watching cozy murder mysteries, tending her vegetable garden, and reading steamy romances that always make her toes curl.

The Brides of Karadok series by Alice Coldreath combines character development, intrigue, and romance stories in a medieval-inspired kingdom setting. Wed by Proxy is the first novel of the Brides of Karadok series by Alice Coldbreath. The lead in the novel is a twenty-four-year-old woman named Mathilde Martindale, who has never met any of her three husbands. When she finally has enough of it, she disguises herself as a boy and heads out to find Lord Guy Martindale, her current husband. What is interesting is that she has never met the man despite being married for three years. When she arrives and reveals herself to Martindale, he is skeptical and thinks she must just be an imposter out for status and wealth. Even though he is initially very distrustful, her genuine nature and determination finally get to him. Soon enough, he allows her to seduce him even though they have a relationship full of personal insecurities, and misunderstandings, even as they also have to deal with societal expectations. Mathilde goes on a journey from an obedient, and sheltered woman to become an assertive and independent woman. On his part, Guy goes from a guarded and cynical man who becomes willing to let romance into his life. Combining emotional growth, humor, and romance, it is a compelling read perfect for fans of historical romance and general romance fiction readers.

The second novel of the Brides of Karadok series of novels is The Unlovely Bride. This is the story of Lenora Montmayne who was once the most beautiful and celebrated woman at the court of King Wymer. Things take a turn for the worse when the summer palace is ravaged by a redpox epidemic, leaving her with ugly scars that cause her to lose social standing. Struggling to deal with her loss of social status, she has to define herself beyond what used to for years. Trying to get herself a new beginning, Leonora dons a heavy veil to conceal her scars. She also goes to Lord Garman the man famed for his surly demeanor with an unusual proposal. Surprisingly, the man finds her offer intriguing and they embark on a partnership which the man soon discovers is very beneficial. It happens that Leonora has more to offer than just her former beauty, as beneath it all is a compassionate and resilient woman. Leonora’s journey challenges the superficial values of the court, as she becomes a woman of substance even without her beauty. She does all that, even as she helps Lord Garman go from a surly and reviled nobleman into a supportive partner, to showcase the importance of understanding and acceptance.

The Consolation Prize is the third novel of the Brides of Karadok series of novels. This is the story of the last surviving member of the once-powerful Bleschmarch family – Princess Una. After a long period of political upheaval and war, she has been under house arrest for three years. She is determined to start afresh in relative obscurity but the king has other plans. He wants to marry her off to the irresponsible and roguish man named Armand de Busell who has never said that he wants a wife. However, the king forces them together and they find themselves living as man and wife, even as they deal with societal expectations and personal insecurities. Una is struggling with having to define her identity while Armand deals with newfound emotions and responsibilities. From their evolving relationship, Armand and Una learn to understand and support each other even as they challenge their judgments and preconceptions of those around them. Ultimately, it is a tale of personal growth and unexpected romance set in medieval times.
