The plot of the novel revolves around the life of a secret service agent named Ethan Burke. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Ethan Burke comes to wayward Pines, Idaho on a mission as a secret service agent. He is required to find and recover a couple of federal agents who had gone missing from the bucolic town around one month before. However, minutes after he arrives in Wayward Pines, he gets involved in a very violent accident. After the accident, Ethan Burke is taken to a hospital without having his ID, cell phone, and briefcase. But, the staff of the hospital seems to be very friendly with him, which make him feel a little odd. With a passage of a few days, the investigation of Ethan related to his missing colleagues makes him ask many more questions than the answers. He begins to wonder why his phone calls to his wife and son in another are not able to connect since the day he has arrived in Wayward Pines. Also, he finds it very difficult to convince other people about his real identity. Ethan also seems to wonder about the purpose of having electrical fences all around the town. He tries to think whether it is for keeping the residents inside or some other thing out. As Ethan moves closer to finding the truth with each step, he seems to move further away from the world that he thought he was very well aware of. Soon, he realizes that he must get ready to face a horrifying truth, or else he may not get out alive from the Wayward pines.
The second novel of the Wayward Pines series was published under the title ‘Wayward’. It was released by the Thomas & Mercer publishing house in the year 2013. The plot of this novel deals with the town of Wayward Pines and once again features the main character in the form of Ethan Burke. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, author Blake has described Wayward Pines as having a population of just 461 people. It is very well situated between the mountains and seems to be an idyllic modern town, except for the razor wire and electrified fence, the relentless surveillance that keeps a track of each work and gesture, and the 24/7 scoping of the sniper throughout the town. To add to the wonder of the town, none of the residents are aware of how they came to Wayward Pines. They only know that they were told how to live, where to work and whom to marry. Some people believe that the residents are dead while others believe that they are trapped under an unfathomable experiment. Each of the residents of the town dreams of leaving secretly, but none of them dare to do so as they know that they will be made to face serious consequences if they get caught while trying to escape. Ethan Burke has come from the outside world of the town and knows its truth. Being a sheriff, he is aware of the fact that Wayward is not just a town. He also knows that on the other side of the electrified fence lies a nightmare that no one has ever imagined.
