Born in Northern England in the United Kingdom, Barbara Cleverly, a former teacher, studied and graduated from the University of Durham. Although, currently working both in Cambridgeshire and in Suffolk, she stays in Cambridge. Barbara Cleverly is known to have given birth to one son and parented him along with some her other five step children. Barbara cleverly is therefore an award winning writer, that not only received the CWA award in the year 2004, but some of her other book series also got shortlisted in the year 1999 for various awards, with the Last Kashmir Rose receiving accolades as one of the NewYork times Notable Books. Interestingly, Barbara is known to be quite familiar with East of England to an extent that her Latin Hall of An Old Magic book was actually inspired by the medieval Suffolk house, from which she is known to have lived in while staying in the East of England. That said therefore, Cleverly, is known to have authored so many books which comprises of about 5 historical suspense novels, the Damascened Blade, that won the CWA Historical dagger Award as well as the Last Kashmiri’ Rose to the Ragtime in Simla and a lot more other books. Similarly, Barbara is also renowned for the Laetita Talbot Mystery series and the Detective Joe Sandilands series which constitutes of about eleven books.
Barbara cleverly is therefore known to have specialized both in novels and in series, all which constitutes of either fiction and mysteries stories, and which can be regarded to be quite an exemplary work. Having been inspired to write from the occurrences in her environment and happenings around her, a case in point is the Joe Sandilands mystery books that were set against the British Raj Background and which were mainly prompted by a damaged old trunk that she came across inside the room in her attic. Due to that experience Cleverly spilled almost 2 centuries old memories of her family and especially of her great uncle who had spent so much time in India, and whose achievements and exploits was witnessed during the blossoming period of the British reign.
She is therefore a renowned and an accomplished writer. With some of her remarkable works like the Joe Sandiland series, revolving around Joe Sandiland, a (SYD) Scotland Yard Detective and a world war 1 hero. A book that was primarily set in the then British ruled India as well as in Europe covering between the 1920’s and the 1930’s.In addition, The last King of Kashmiri Rose is also part of the books in this series. Well, in this book, the story takes place in a region of the saffron sunsets and during the blazing heat of summer. You see, an English woman has been discovered dead, with her wrist slit and with her body afloat in a bathing tub full of water and blood, and so the question is whether the case is suicidal or not ?
This case then falls in the hand of Joe Sandilands, a (SYD) Scotland Yard detective, who apparently had survived both the Western front Horror and also gone through some very enduring 6 heavy months, in Calcutta India, an English colony. Joe is then given a directive to investigate this ordeal, to which he realizes that there have been similar ordeals of such mysterious nature, thus hearkening a sinister ties to this current case. Now with the Britain’s sovereignty on the decline and the insurgent India on the rise. Joe Sandiland is now pitted to navigate the dangerous and tricky paths of political decorum in the bid to bring that cunning killer to book, and even with the knowledge that their is a victim in line that has already been marked to die.
Another interesting read that Barbara Cleverly delivers remarkably and interestingly is the Laetitia talbot Mystery series. Set between the 1920’s and the 1930’s era, this story is about an archeologist turned detective. OK, With some of the books under this category being the Tomb of Zueus. The first book in this series which sweeps the reader to an exotic island of crete around the year 1928. Well here, Barbara introduces a marvelous and an amazing new heroine, the Whip smart and a highly spirited Laetitia Talbot. Of course, quite an inspiring archeologist with a deep passion for adventures and for the mysteries that only the most keen eye is able to see.
Now, with a privilege of having been born in the British background, Lateita has been raised and brought up with the belief that she can excel in virtually any possible field in life and so she has chosen a career in archeology, clearly a male dominated field. However she enthusiastically approaches her first assignment in crete in her own way, style and technique. Until she suddenly enters the Villa Europa, where some things are clearly amiss. Meanwhile her host , one very charismatic archeologist is dashing to dig up the fabled island’s next big treasure by himself, probably the tomb of the King of Gods. But to a twist of events, a beautiful, a young and an adorable woman is found hanged, after the golden youth was driving her Buggati over some cliff.
Out of the shadows, come the whispers of past loves and past jealousies as well as some very ancient myths that sounds and sends an eerie discord with the current events. Letty as she is fondly referred to, will therefore need all her determination and her skills to unearth or unravel the secrets that lies beneath the Villa Europa’s roof as they lead her to to some of the most terrifying and the darkest of all places. What follows is quite intriguing and captivating, which will keep the reader digging deep in the book to see how everything will pans out.
Although, none of the Barbara Cleverly books have yet been adopted into either a movie or into a TV show, they are however quite incredible and captivating books that will give you that movie like feeling and experience every moment you get to read through them. But that said, one can always get these books in various formats, say in the audio cassettes or simply in audio CD’s formats, for those who would want to listen and to enjoy these books more.
