Working as a full-time writer of speculative fiction, the historical novelist Annie Bellet has been writing for quite some time now, with her ever unique combination of science-fiction along with fantasy, as well as short-stories too, she has become a highly regarded modern novelist of the genre, showing a clear love and passion for it as an author, taking it to a whole new level, reinventing it in her own image and making it completely her own. Immersing herself completely within the field of fantasy, she is also a player of role playing games, or RPG’s, something which allows her to fully explore the art-form and all its creative possibilities, further establishing and developing her imagination in the process. Using her characters to effectively anchor her worlds and stories too, she has been able to give them a sense of immediacy and relevancy unlike any other, depicting them in a down-to-earth manner that’s easy to relate to for the reader. This then allows the reader to relate to what’s happening, thus making them feel as if they’re really there, exploring these inner worlds alongside these leading protagonists. Constructing worlds is something Bellet excels at, though, as they’re finely tuned with a great degree of accuracy, something that she achieves through her extensive researching throughout. Over time this is something that will continue to grow and develop, as well as creating stronger stories that are timely in their appeal, with her universal themes and ideas that resonate with readers from all across the world, whoever they are. Knowing and understanding her craft she has been able to effectively utilize her skills as an author, bringing it forwards in the process and doing something new with it. Catering to the fantasy scene, she has entirely found her niche and works well within it, giving the readers what they want, whilst retaining her own unique voice at the same time.
Early and Personal Life
Growing up with a passion for both history and literature, Annie Bellet would come to appreciate both of these practices, eventually bringing them together for her many novels to follow. Constantly losing herself in a book, she created rich and imaginative inner worlds that were unique and exciting, not only for her, but for those that she would eventually write for too. Over time she would continue to nurture her love of writing throughout her education, as it was something that stayed with her continually, with her continually creating new ideas.
Attending university she would go on to gain a BA in English, along with a BA in Medieval Studies, something which helped her speak parts of other languages, such as Medieval Welsh and Anglo-Saxon too. This is something that would help to enrich her work and material in the years to come, as it would lend a certain degree of authenticity, allowing the reader to find it far more believable. An active member of the fantasy scene, she plays a large number of table top and video games, as well as spending a lot of time outdoors, always looking for the next big exciting idea.
Writing Career
It was in 2011 on the 4th of March that she would come to write her first debut novel ‘A Heart in Sun and Shadow’, a book which would not only start her career, but also be a part of the ‘Cymru That Was’ series. Whilst there’s only one book in this series so far, she has also gone on to create a number of other franchises, such as the ‘Gryphonpike Chronicles’, ‘Remy Pigeon’ and ‘Pyrrh Considerable Crimes Division’. Writing short-fiction too, she has appeared in over two dozen magazines featuring popular and influential writers of fantasy, something that she caters well to in whatever form.
Her use of language is extremely rich and varied too, as she manages to create a vibrant and colorful style that completely stands out from the rest. Writing under the name of Anne Baines too, she uses this as her pen-name for thriller novels, all of which contain her stylized and unique flair for excitement too. Still writing to this very day, she currently lives in Portland, Oregon, where she continues to write at an ever regular and consistent pace, something that she’ll continue for many years to come yet.
Hunting Season
Released through the ‘Doomed Muse Press’ publishing label, this was first published in 2014 on the 2nd of December to a lot of acclaim and attention. Setting up the fourth title in the highly popular and ongoing series of novels titled ‘The Twenty-Sided Sorceress’ this particular title borrows heavily from the world of fantasy gaming. Clearly understanding and holding a love for its source, it manages to bring its world to life through its unique take on the genre, showing a lot of reverence and passion for it in the process.
Filled with pop-cultural references, this particularly knowing novel follows Jade Crow, a gamer and a sorceress, as she attempts to navigate all manner of magical danger. With her enemies and friends colliding, she is definitely up against the elements if she ever hopes to get herself out of the trouble that she now finds herself in. As demon hounds and all manner of Celtic legend comes to life, she really has to ensure that all of her ‘hits’ are ‘critical’ if she ever hopes to have a chance of even surviving. Can she keep her wits about her though? Where will her journey take her? Who will emerge victorious from the hunting season?
A Stone’s Throw
Brought out through the ‘Doomed Mute Press’ once again, this marks the third book in ‘The Gryphonpike Chronicles’. Following on directly from the previous title it took the story forwards, whilst also developing some new ideas too. Initially published on the 9th of February in 2012, it also managed perfectly recaptured the essence of the first two books that made them both work so well.
Making up the Gryphonpike Companions is ‘Killer’, an Elven archer and mute, Rahiel the fireball throwing pixie, along with her unicorn Bill, and Azyrin and Makha. Heading down into the caverns deep beneath the Barrowlands, the companions must travel to gain the magical scabbard, a legendary object spoken of in a hundred year old story. Tested to the limits of their abilities, they must traverse the many dangers lying in wait for them, along with Killer keeping his friendship with Drake. Will they remain friends? Can they survive the odds? What lies within a stone’s throw?
