Author Ann Matthews Martin was raised in Princeton, New Jersey; her father (named Henry) worked as a cartoonist (for many publications, including The New Yorker), and her mother (named Edith) worked as a pre-school teacher. She was born August 12, 1955. On her mother’s side, the ancestry can be traced to pilgrims that voyaged on the Mayflower in the year 1620.

Ann M. Martin was interested in writing from a very young age. She would tell her mother stories, before she was able to write, and her mother would them down. When she was younger, she liked authors such as: Roald Dahl, Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Astrid Lindgren, and Hugh Lofting.

She enjoyed the subject of creative writing in elementary school, and it was as a second grader that she found out she had a passion for writing. It was here that she began writing stories, and the fourth grade teacher she had wrote on a student folder of Martin’s that she would make a great writer because of her spending a lot of her free time writing stories in different notebooks she had. While attending middle school and high school, she liked English and French; she did not like Math.

Martin also loved to work with kids and decided that she should become a teacher, and wanted to help those kids that had disabilities. She worked at the Eden Institute (which is a school that is for autistic kids, located in her hometown) during the summer time.

She graduated from high school in the year 1973 (after attending Princeton High School) and went to Smith College for four years (from 1973 until 1977). Here, she studied two subjects: early-childhood education and child psychology. She wrote her senior thesis on the subject of using children’s literature in the classroom.

She taught at Plumfield School in a classroom that was split fourth and fifth graders. The students she taught had learning disabilities that they struggled with, like autism and dyslexia. After leaving teaching, she moved on to publishing, moving up from an editorial assistant all the way to senior editor. Martin worked for many big time publishers of kids books (Scholastic and Pocket Books are two examples).

Ann Martin has written some stand alone novels and “The Baby-Sitters Club” series; the latter, she is more known for writing. She writes children’s and young adult fiction. She wrote the first 35 installments before having a bunch of ghost writers take over the books. After stopping writing the books, she started focusing more and more on her stand alone novels. Her first book, “Bummer Summer” came out in 1983 and was given the Children’s Choice Award in the year 1985. Another novel she wrote, “A Corner of the Universe” was given a Newbery Honor in the year 2003.

“Kristy’s Great Idea” is the first novel in the “The Baby-Sitters Club” series and was released in the year 1986. Kristy believes that the Baby-Sitters Club is simply an awesome idea. Her and her friends (Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey) all enjoy baby-sitting kids. Having a club will allow them to have a lot of fun, and make a bunch of money.

No one thought about things like wild pets, two year old kids they could not control, prank calling, and parents that are not honest. And Stacey, too, who keeps on acting more mysterious as time goes on. The baby sitting club is not exactly easy, but Kristy and company are not giving up until they start to get things right.

Fans love the books, some from when they were younger and find that their minds were wandering back to these stories and wanted to re-read them. These books made up some readers’ formative years as readers. Some were such fans, they still remembered certain facts about each of the characters in the stories, in some cases, they could call to mind more facts about the characters than real people they knew.

“Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls” is the second novel in the “The Baby-Sitters Club” series and was released in the year 1986. Stacey, Claudia, Mary Anne, and Kristy have experienced quite a bit since they started up the Baby-Sitters Club. All of that was nothing compared to the creepy stuff that they are going through right now. They have been getting odd calls while they are on the job. The phone rings, they answer, and there is no one there.

Claudia believes that it is the Phantom Caller, who is a jewel thief that has been robbing people in the area. She has always liked reading mystery stories, but likes it more when they happen to other people. Her and the rest of the baby-sitters decide to take action. They have some mixed results.

“The Truth About Stacey” is the third novel in the “The Baby-Sitters Club” series and was released in the year 1986. No one knows this (except for the members of the Baby sitters Club) but Stacey has diabetes. Even they do not know the full truth about her though. Her biggest problem is her parents. They do not admit that she even has the disease and insist on taking her to all the doctors in America pretty much.

Stacey has already lost a friend over seeing so many doctors, and is not going to let it happen again. Especially at this moment, right when the members of the Baby-Sitters Club needs her now more than ever before.

“Mary Anne Saves the Day” is the fourth novel in the “The Baby-Sitters Club” series and was released in the year 1986. Mary Anne has never been one of the leaders of the Baby-Sitters Club. She has left that to either Claudia, or Stacey, or Kristy. There has been a big fight between the four and Mary Anne has to rely on herself now.

Things were bad enough when she was only left alone at a lunch table at school. Mary Anne knows that she has to take charge when she is responsible for caring for a sick kid with no help from any other club member.

The Baby-Sitters Club will be no more, unless someone stands up and does something. And quickly. Maybe Mary Anne needs to step up and save the day for everyone.
