Her books also capture with amazing clarity the lives of the Shakers, and one has to admire just how simple and chaste the life they lead is. Additionally, this Christian writer also explores themes of family, and the struggles and strife that members of a family go through. Books by Ann H Gabhart
The Outsider
The central character in this series is a young lady by the name of Gabrielle Hope. Gabrielle and her mother joined the Shaker Community at Harmony Hill in 1807. The two join the community in the hope of finding some stability and devotion in their lives. The simple lifestyle of the Shaker community is indeed very alluring for the young Gabrielle, and she is happy to oblige to all the strict rules by which the brothers and sisters of the community live. All is well until a doctor, who is not a shaker, is called upon to help the community. Gabrielle gets inexplicably attracted to this doctor. It is then that Gabrielle has to decide whether or not to follow her heart, and accept that she loves the outsider, or to stay behind and preserve her ties with her brothers and sister. She is certainly in the very horns of dilemma, as she has to decide whether or not to leave the community and go away with the man she loves, or stay behind and forgo her love.

Angel Sister
This is yet another thought- provoking and emotional book by Ann that will bring tears to the eyes of even the most hardened of readers. The main character is this series is a strong, level headed, young girl by the name of Kate Merritt. Kate is neither the first born nor the last born in her family, but the amount of responsibility she shoulders should warrant the position of being a first born. The story unfolds during the great depression, when the times are tough and the long days endless. Kate’s father, Victor, is a fairly successful businessman, who deals in the business of horseshoes. All is well until he goes to war. Upon his return, he starts seeking solace in alcohol in a bid to erase the memories and horrors of the dreadful war. It is only a matter of time before his alcohol consumption spins out of control and he becomes an alcoholic.

Kate’s mother, Nadine, is an otherwise lovely woman save for the fact that in the face of disaster, she flinches. When her husband’s problem with alcohol becomes unbearable, Nadine is unable to cope or offer her family any of the emotional support they desperately need. It is then that Kate steps up and accepts to bear the emotional burden that is tearing her family apart. She does so in a very heroic and admirable way, and readers can’t help but get attached to this young girl.

There are some rather shocking revelations that are made later on in the book. The introduction of the destitute and dying young girl Lorena Birdsong is one of the most shocking and intriguing occurrences in the book. Hers is an attention grabbing story, and one that makes readers question the fairness of the legal system of Kate’s time. The book also explores the dark path of family tragedies and the strife and struggle that breaking family loyalties can bring with it. The book doesn’t however just stop at the tragedies- it also offers hope and illustrates just how powerful forgiveness is.

Conclusion
Ann H Gabhart is one of the best Christian writers of all time. Her books inspire and impact on the readers. Her works will undoubtedly far outlive her memory, as she is one author who has left her mark in the literary world.
