Animorphs is a series of Sci-Fi Fantasy novels written by K. A. Applegate. The books follow the exploits of a group of young adults who can take the shape of different animals.
+The Story
The Animorphs series began publication in 1996. K. A. Applegate proceeded to produce over fifty books in the series, this not including the companion books set within the same continuity.
The Animorphs novels follow the exploits of Cassie, Jake, Rachel, Marco, and Tobias. Along with an alien they call Ax, the teens have the ability to take the shape of the animals they touch.
The kids were granted this special power so that they could participate in a great battle against the Yeerks, a parasitic alien race hell-bent on world domination. The Yeerks operate by entering living organisms, merging with their brains and driving the vessel as one would a car.
By the time the Animorphs series kicks off, the Yeerks have already begun infiltrating the human race, carrying out a silent invasion by slowly taking over individuals of note and using their resources to open the way for a full-scale invasion.
The Animorphs, as they eventually begin to call themselves, were thrust into the battle against the Yeerks when they met Ax, a member of an alien race called the Andalites who created the transformation technology the kids use to change shape.
The Animorphs are each quite powerful in their own right, especially if they can gain access to the abilities of a particularly useful insect or animal. However, Jake and crew are not without their limitations.
For one thing, they can only remain in the shape of their chosen animal for a short period of time. A failure to return to human shape before the allotted time limit elapses typically leads to the individual in question remaining in their animal form forever.
This restriction is a significant problem for the group because whenever they take the shape of any given animal, there is a chance that their natural intelligence will be overwhelmed by their animal’s natural instincts. It takes considerable willpower for one to take an animal’s shape whilst also maintaining their human intelligence.
Additionally, the Animorphs do not have the power to rapidly change from animal to animal. In order to change shape from one animal to another, they must first return to human form, a limitation that can sometimes expose them to danger.
The author has a strong love for animals and that is what drove her to create the Animorphs series. She thought it would be cool to create a cast of young characters who could inhabit the minds of popular animals like tigers and bears.
Applegate allows her imagination to inspire her. However, she also does a lot of research. Her goal is to make sure that when her characters take animal form their actions are accurate and grounded.
Even though the Animorphs books are fantastical in nature and explore a battle for survival between humans and aliens, a lot of emphases is placed on the lives and personal struggles of the characters.
Jake typically takes center stage because he is the leader of the group. Jake knew every single one of the other characters even before their battle against the Yeerks began. As such, his knowledge of their capabilities positioned him best to utilize their attributes in battle.
Rachel normally fills the position of warrior in the group because she is so bloodthirsty. Her gymnastic skills are an asset to the team.
The series hints at a potential relationship between Rachel and Tobias. Tobias struggled with bullies before he got his powers. An orphan who lives with his aunt and uncle, Tobias has self-esteem issues.
Cassie is the brain of the group. The fact that her parents are veterinarians makes her the most knowledgeable when it comes to animals.
Marco is the clown of the team. Despite being the comic relief character, his pragmatism comes in handy for Jake whenever he has a difficult decision to make.
Ax rounds out the team, an alien being whose brother died after giving the kids their morphing powers.
The Animorphs books are short, simple and straightforward. They are written with children in mind and only contain mild violence.
+Adaptations
The Animorphs series became a television show in 1998. Also called ‘Animorphs’, the show ran for two years, accruing 26 episodes in the process.

+The Invasion
Something has gone wrong. People don’t seem right anymore. And Jake knows why. He was there with his friends when a light crashed from the sky. They all thought it was a plane.
And they were partially right. Though, this particular plane came from space. That was only the beginning of the most bizarre night of Jake’s life. He learned that the earth had come under assault from an evil race of aliens and only he and his friends could fight to save it, but only if they took the power being offered to them.
Now Jake and his friends know the truth. And they also have the power to change into whatever animal they touch. They are ready to save mankind. But the fight won’t be easy. Their enemy can hide in plain sight.
Once the Yeerks sneak their way into a person’s brain, identifying them becomes a challenge. Even more challenging is getting that person free from the control of their parasite assailant before they can do serious harm to the human race.
But for all those difficulties, Jake and his friends cannot afford to throw in the towel, not when the future is at stake.
+The Visitor
No one knows what Rachel and her friends can do. They don’t know about the fight to save humanity that has been ignited. If they did, they would tell Rachel how cool they think it is to be an Animorph.
But Rachel knows that her power isn’t all fun and games, especially when she learns that her best friend’s father might be under the control of evil aliens.
