Angela Kelly
Angela Kelly was born November 4, 1957 in Liverpool, Lancashire and was the daughter of a dock worker and a nurse. She served as a Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser to Queen Elizabeth II from 1994 until the monarch’s death in the year 2022.
She first met Her Majesty by chance in 1992 when she was working as housekeeper to Sir Christopher Mallaby, then the British Ambassador to Germany. Months later Angela got a phone call where she was offered a job as the Queen’s own personal dresser.
Angela started working for the Queen after she gained employment following an interview at Windsor Castle in 1994. She was responsible for the Queen’s clothes, insignia, jewellery, researching the venues for royal visits as well as the significance of different colors, so that she could create appropriate outfits for the monarch. In 2019, she announced that the Queen would wear only faux-furs.
Angela and Alison Pordum (the Queen’s in-house dressmaker until 2008) founded their own fashion label, called Kelly & Pordum.
In 2006, she was appointed a Member of the Royal Victorian Order (MVO) and was promoted to Lieutenant of the same Order (LVO) in 2012. She was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Version of the Royal Household Long and Faithful Service Medal in 2014 for more than 20 years worth of service to the Royal Family.
She described her relationship with Queen Elizabeth II as them discussing makeup, clothes, jewellery. But they still had quite a lot of fun together. The Queen had a wicked sense of humor and is a great mimic, able to do all accents, including Kelly’s.
“Dressing the Queen: The Jubilee Wardrobe” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2013. Under grey skies, over a million people gathered together for the Thames River Pageant of the 2012 Diamond Jubilee. Huddled under an ocean of umbrellas, some spent the night there just to secure prime seats. However it proved worthwhile. While the parade went by, there atop the splendid Spirit of Chartwell the Queen stood, resplendent against the rain and wind in a pashmina shawl and smart crystal encrusted white coat. The effect was that of breathtaking beauty, and it struck exactly the right note with the rain dampened crowd, and reinforced Britain as a noble maritime nation.
This book reveals the careful planning and preparation which went into the Queen’s wardrobe for this Diamond Jubilee, which is the first celebration since Queen Victoria in 1897 and was made all the more momentous by London’s hosting the 2012 Olympics. The secret to the Queen’s unfailing style is Angela Kelly, whose team of milliners and dressmakers spent 2 years designing and bringing to fruition the creations seen in the events that lead up to and during the Diamond Jubilee, and at the Olympics themselves. Along with presenting the right image, the Queen’s clothing has to address so many practical concerns, and all of her garments have to be pristinely maintained. Obviously, no outfit would be complete without the perfect hat, and a chapter of this book is devoted solely to their highly detailed and intricate creation.
Whether the day holds an afternoon at Royal Ascot or a historic state visit, the Queen commands attention wherever she might appear. If you have ever wondered how she maintains such impeccable personal style, then this is well-illustrated book is going to answer that question along with so much more.
This is a fascinating book in its photos, historical details, and explanations of all the things that have to be considered. It’s a must read for anybody that loves everything Royal, or history buffs, and those that can marvel at the spectacular one-of-a-kind creations.
