Andrew Grant is an England-based writer and novelist, who writes mostly in the suspense and thriller genre. His first novel series revolved around the life of a spy David Trevellyan. Grant is the younger brother of Lee Child, who himself is a well-known and bestselling author of the thriller genre. Andrew was born in the year 1968 Birmingham, England. He attended the St. Albans school in Hertfordshire and later, graduated in Drama and English Literature from the University of Sheffield. After graduating, Andrew founded a theater-art company producing theater plays. The theater company successfully appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. But as the days progressed, he started finding it difficult to manage the theater group due to problems related to cash inflows. As a result, he left the theater and started working for a telecommunication company, where he spent almost fifteen years. Later, he left that too, and decided to become a novelist. He has written three novels in the David Trevellyan series till now. He has become successful right from his first novel, which received high ratings from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. Grant lives in still lives in Sheffield and frequently travels between Chicago and Sheffield for his novel-relate works. He married Tasha Alexander in the year 2010. Tasha herself is a noted novelist and lives in Chicago.

The David Trevellyan series written by Andrew Grant comprises of three novels, which have been released till now from 2009 to 2012 by Pan MacMillan Australia, with the fourth one being ready to be released. All the novels of the series are very interesting to read and have plots full of thrills and suspense. The first novel was titled ‘Even’ and was published in the year 2009. The novel introduces David Trevellyan as a spy and an under-cover agent who is also a former Royal Navy Intelligence officer. His skills and undying attitude make him one of the best undercover agents of the world. David had also been a seasoned operative for the British Intelligence and a man of honor.

Being an ex-naval officer, he has got all the killer instincts and survival tactics that make him a real threat to the criminals. As a result, they always try to set him up so that he can no longer remain a threat to them. In one such instance, he is shown as taking a lonely walk in the late night in between his hotel in New York City and a restaurant, where he comes across a man in the alley, who has been shot to death and is lying by the side of the road. As soon as David reaches near the dead body, a police car arrives to catch him. David realizes that he has been set up. But, he shows no signs of worry as he thinks he has not committed the crime. He has been in a lot of trouble before and has been able to come out of every situation because of his wit and determination.

David used to work as an undercover officer by the orders of his superior officers. S, he was thinking that they will help him out in this case. But, he is not given any chance to contact them and the NYPD rather hands his case to the FBI. This makes it even more difficult for him to get out. Also, he gets sucked deep into the system when he learns about his bosses turning their backs. Therefore, he decides to act alone and make ways to clear his name of this case. He has no idea about who is his friend and who is not, yet he starts to find the truth and learns that there has a been a huge international conspiracy that has been laid down against him. He believes his instincts and moves forward step by step knowing that if he gets caught, he will murdered. But he thinks about the brighter side of it and believes that if he succeeds in finding the truth then he will get redemption. This keeps him motivated all through his struggle. He keeps fighting to clear his name as well as that of the dead body who was murdered in the alley.

The novel was very much successful and was reviewed very well by one and all. People praised Grant for his efforts as a beginner and motivated him to write more novels. Although, the novel was similar to that of ‘Jack Reacher’ written by his brother Lee Child, Grant was appreciated for his crisp dialogues and thrilling story. The tag line of the novel, ” You don’t get mad – you get EVEN” became very popular.

The sequel to the first novel was published in the year 2010 by Pan MacMillan Australia and was titled, ‘Die Twice’. The plot of this novel starts from where it had ended in the first part. He is seen dedicated to leave the New York City after finishing his previous mission. But, he is summoned by the British Consulate in Chicago, where he assigned a job of finding a rogue agent. He is ordered to work within the boundaries of the system, but he believes that he can do so only by relying on his own instincts and skills. He does not trust anyone now and takes his own decisions based on his investigations. He has to save the lives of countless innocent people by putting an end to all the treacherous schemes.

David Trevellyan believes that he is bound to do what is right, even though he has to bear huge personal costs. This novel was compared to the likes of his brother, Lee Child and yet it stood out in excellence. Andrew Grant was praised for his efforts and his novel was believed to have created a new path in the crime thriller category. The action scenes from the sequel are believed to have a solid adrenaline rush from start to end. The Library Journal described it to be full of counterterrorism, espionage and thrill. David Trevellyan is shown as even more macho and has been described as a James Bond-like Intelligence agent by the reviewers. His character has been portrayed as larger than life with a great sense of observation of the human nature. Grant was very much appreciated for his efforts and it motivated him to write another sequel to the thriller.

This book is a standalone which is better than the last one I read. Ok story, but find that much time is spent describing the buildings in each and every location

I, too, have read and reread all the Jack Reacher books. I was looking for some others in the genre and found Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X series. It won’t disappoint. During Covid I read the whole series back to back in about two weeks. The other series is Mark Greaney’s Gray Man. Forget the movie – it was just awful. The books are riveting. I binge read all of them. Now I have to wait for the next novels to be released next year! I’m about to start on Andrew Grant’s (Lee’s younger brother) books.

I have read all of the Jack Reacher novels and also own the whole set. I re=read the set during the lock-down. I was looking for someone else who wrote thrillers. Believable ones !! NOT those that do more in a lifetime than the writer has them achieving in one day. We live in a town with a great 2nd hand book farm and on a visit last Friday found Andrew Grant’s first David Trevellyan novel. So I bought it.
