Amy Odell
Amy Odell is the editor of Cosmopolitan.com, which is the largest community of millennial women on the Internet. Amy was named to the post in September of 2013 and oversees all of Cosmo’s digital presence, which includes social media, editorial content, and original video production.
She is responsible for expanding the site’s editorial to include a wide range of political, feminist, and LGBTQ topics along with relationship and style, and celebrity news coverage. Under her leadership, Cosmo has more than doubled traffic to reach more than 34 million monthly unique visitors, and the brand’s social media following has increased three fold to 9 million. As a result, it was recognized on the 2014 Adweek Hot List as the “hottest magazine in digital”.
Prior to working at Cosmo, she was an editor at BuzzFeed from 2012 to 2013 and has been credited with the launch of 2 women’s verticals for the viral news page, BuzzFeed Shift and BuzzFeed Fashion.
She started her journalism career in 2007 as a party reporter for New York magazine, where she ultimately became the founding blogger of The Cut, the magazine’s fashion blog in 2008.
Her work has appeared in Bloomberg, Time, New York magazine, Businessweek, and numerous other publications.
In 2014, she was selected to Crain’s New York Business prestigious “40 Under 40” list, and was included in the Business of Fashion 500, a professional index of the people that are shaping the global fashion industry. In 2015, she was named to Forbes’ list of “30 Under 30” in media and featured in Adweek as a “New Publisher”, one of 15 young innovators that’ll change the magazine business.
Amy is a graduate of New York University and lives with her very sassy cat and her husband in Tribeca.
“Tales From the Backrow: An Outsider’s View from Inside the Fashion Industry” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2015. Amy takes readers behind the stage of New York’s hottest fashion shows in order to meet the most influential designers, celebrities, models, editors, and photographers in the world.
However she first must push her way through the crowds outside and weave her way through this packed venue, from the very back row all the way to the front. And while Amy climbs the ladder (with tips about how you can as well) she introduces this industry that’s powered by larger-than-life characters. She meets the surprisingly gracious Rachel Zoe, the intimidating Anna Wintour, not to mention the hilarious Chelsea Handler, and so many more.
While she describes the allure of Marchesa’s Oscar worthy dresses and Alexander Wang’s ripped tights, she layers in something else: how the fashion industry is an exaggerated mirror of human fallibility, which reflects our own desperate desire to belong, and make a mark. Amy is the first to admit that as much as she’s embarrassed by the thrill that she gets anytime she gets invited to some exclusive after party, she still can’t help but RSVP “yes”. She says this in her light hearted, cocktail hour confession and it comes from somebody sober enough to recognize insanity for what it truly is.
Welcome to the wonderful and weird world of high fashion. Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in public relations, publishing, or design, or just fascinated with what truly goes on behind the scenes without the typical sugarcoating, this is required reading for you.
This is a great and almost natural comic narrative, laced with a ton of name dropping and is sure to evoke chuckles, as well as a sigh of relief that there are no reader portraits. It’s a fun ride, and Odell’s insight into what fashion tells us about ourselves is ultimately what makes this book so refreshing. It’s a sharply amusing fashion memoir. It’s relatable, funny, and insightful to pretty anybody that works in media.
“Anna: The Biography” is a non-fiction book that was released in 2022. The story of Anna Wintour follows the steep climb of this ambitious young woman that would, with singular and legendary focus, become one of the most powerful people in media.
Anna was a tomboy as a child without any apparent interest in clothing however, seduced by the bob haircuts and miniskirts of swinging 1960s London, she grew into a fashion obsessed teen. Her dad, an influential newspaper editor, loomed rather large in her life, and once he decided that she would become the editor-in-chief of Vogue, she never looked back after that.
She left high school, having grown impatient to begin her career, and got this job at a trendy boutique in London, which is an experience that would be the first of so many defeats. Undeterred, she found work in the competitive world of magazines, and would eventually go on a journey to New York and fight to ascend, no matter what or who stood in her way. Once she was finally crowned editor-in-chief of Vogue, in one of the stormiest transitions in fashion magazine history, she continued on to battle to retain this enviable position, and ultimately rose to dominate all of Conde Nast.
Named one of Time’s 100 Must Read Books in 2022, it’s a revealing and in-depth bio that is based on extensive interviews with Anna’s closest collaborators and friends. Weaving her own personal tale into a larger narrative about the hierarchical dynamics in the fashion industry and the complicated world of Conde Nast, this also charts the relentless ambitions of the woman that wound up becoming an icon.
Amy takes her readers behind Anna’s iconic sunglasses and bob in this deeply researched account, and delivers a closeup view of the most powerful woman in all of fashion. It’s Anna like you have never seen her before, in this most revealing portrait of Wintour that’s ever been published. You will know every step (and misstep) in Anna’s famous ascent.
This is a dazzling and exhaustive deep dive into the ruthless and glittering world of fashion media and one of its most iconic empresses. All as Anna gets served up from A to Z in such page turning detail.
