Alejandro Zambra is a Chilean novelist, poet, and short story writer.
He was born on September 24, 1975 in Santiago, Chile. He has found recognition for his writing throughout his career. The author grew up in Chile during the time that Augusto Pinochet was dictator. In an interview done in a magazine with a friend from the Master’s program, the author talked about his thoughts regarding growing up in Chile during the seventies and eighties, a time of dictatorship, and delved into after the end of power how his life changed.
Zambra attended the Instituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera as well as the University of Chile. He graduated with his degree in the subject of Hispanic literature in 1997. He also received a scholarship to go to Madrid for his postgraduate studies, getting an MA in Hispanic studies. The author also received his literature PhD in Chile from Pontifical Catholic University.

He has been employed for La Tercera, a newspaper, as a literary critic. He has also been a professor at the School of Literature in Santiago at Diego Portales University. He is married to Jazmina Barrera, a Mexican author. They share a son together.

The Private Lives of Trees is a novel written by Alejandro Zambra, the second from the author to be released. This is a story where the writer tells his step-daughter a bedtime story that carries the same name as the novel.
It is the tale of just one night, where the young literature professor is reading a story to Daniela, all while waiting for his wife to return from going out to her art class. He is anxious for Verónica to come back but has been spending each night coming up with a completely unique story to tell her daughter that is all about trees. Then she goes to sleep once he is done with the story.
Every Sunday, he spends time working on a novel that is all about a man tending to his bonsai. Something about this night has changed, though. He has become more concerned than ever that his wife is not going to come back, and starts thinking about the life that they have lived together.
He also imagines what his step-daughter might think of his novel at different ages as she grows up.
He is planning on concluding the story when the mom comes home from work. This is a semi-autobiographical story since the man in this book has finished a book about bonsai trees, which is a reference by the author to himself as he had just finished his previous book Bonsai.
Read The Private Lives of Trees by Alejandro Zambra to witness the magic spell that it casts for yourself!
