About Adib Khorram

A man of many talents, the American author Adib Khorram has many skills under his bow, including working in both film and literature. He also has a history of working as a graphic designer, something which has given him a highly visual style and process, which has allowed him to create his stories with a far more vibrant and colorful edge. This, he has taken in to his work, creating an almost autobiographical piece for his debut, whilst keeping it fictional simultaneously at the same time. It is because of this that his work comes across as far more genuine and to the point, allowing the reader to relate to it on an almost intimate level. He also takes a look at his own roots and upbringing, creating something that is entirely universal, allowing readers worldwide to be drawn in to his worlds and his characters.

Really having a flair for the craft and the form, Khorram has managed to create a style of storytelling that is quite unlike any other. This has also allowed him to reach a worldwide audience, gathering in readers from all across the globe, regardless of who they are or where they’re from. It is his characters that also really manage to resonate too, as they speak to something fundamental of the human condition and what it is to find someone’s place in the world. Showing a lot of potential, there is definitely much more to come from this particular author in the near future, as his writing career grows from strength-to-strength.

Early and Personal Life

Born and raised in Kansas City Missouri, the future author to be Adib Khorram would grow up nurturing a keen passion for the written word. This would progress throughout the years, as he would come to apply his creativity to a number of different pursuits, all whilst finding his voice. Attending the Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, he would receive a Bachelor of Arts awarded in Design and Technical Theater. Focusing on lighting design for this, he would come to understand layout and design in general, something which would come to inform his work greatly over the years.

Later he would back this up by attending the Vancouver Film School, which would see him try his hand at making films. Turning to the page though, he would soon find that his passion for the form really soared here, telling his stories in a clear and visual style. Currently living in Kansas City to this very day, he definitely has a lot more to come yet, with plenty more titles planned on the horizon.

Writing Career

It would be in 2018 that Adib Khorram would release his first debut novel, with the title ‘Darius the Great Is Not Okay’. This would see him quickly rise to fame, with many critics lauding it, with the general public worldwide also singing its many praises. Prior to this he worked as a graphic designer, a practise which he also continues to this very day, as his writing career continues on into the foreseeable future.

Darius the Great Is Not Okay

Published through the ‘Dial Books’ publishing label, this was originally released in 2018 on the 28th of August. A coming-of-age Young Adult novel, this is a great debut and the ideal starter for anyone looking to find out more on the work of Khorram. It also provides a clear window into his mindset and outlook as an author and storyteller, creating a clear and relatable first novel that is universally accessible, operating as its own self contained stand-alone piece.

Working as a coming-of-age story, this combines the many tropes and ideas of the genre with cultural shifts and clashes. It also allows the characters to come alive in the process too, as they speak almost directly to the reader throughout, staying with them long after they’ve put the book down. The setting of Iran and the city of Yazd is also brilliantly realized here too, as it allows the reader to feel as if they’re actually there. All of this essentially works to create the impact that Khorram was initially going for with the story overall, giving it far greater weight and importance.

Looking into the life of one Darius Kellner, it sees him as a young teenage boy all ready to set off to Iran for the first time and meet the rest of his family. Knowing more about The Hobbit and Star Trek than speaking Farsi or Iran culture in general, he is going to meet his grandparents for the first time too. Facing a whole new world and a whole new set of cultural values, he attempts to navigate it all to the best of his abilities, and it is here that he meets his new friend Sohrab for the first time too. Helping him to make the most of it all, Sohrab sets about helping him come to terms with the many cultural shifts, allowing him to find his place in this new environment. Will he be able to manage it all? How will he fare in his new Persian setting? What happens when Darius the Great is not okay?

Themes and Ideas

With his first debut title being a coming-of-age story and a Young Adult novel, Khorram has stated that he sees it as being instrumental that parents listen to their children. Communication is key he says, as he hopes that they find something of themselves within his novels, as they discover the world for the first time. Relating to these core concepts through his characters, he aims to provide them with some of the tools necessary for dealing with the world for the first time.

Looking to the Future

A writer who is showing a lot of promise and potential, Adib Khorram has a lot of projects planned, with more expected to follow. Not only that, but he is also excited by the prospect of Patrick Stewart reprising his role in Star Trek, a show that has had a profound effect on his life. Definitely a writer to watch in the following years to come, this is one novelist who isn’t showing signs of finishing any time soon.
